    Always lots to learn!

Stunning! And I've still got all the other small tanks, spare substrate, can propogate plants... Very tempting, but done think I've ever seen them stocked in LFS {UK}. Might ask next time I pop in!

    Substrate and plants

Ah OK, may just be down to quality of lights? I had been using Nicrew which are 6500k, then tried switching to the allpondsolutions which is 7500k and had substantially better growth (swapped out on the same tank/plants etc). Scaped a new 200l tank just before Christmas which is using the...

    Always lots to learn!

Hi All, So I definitely had multi tank syndrome! Just found it so enjoyable scaping smaller tanks and watching them all (12) develop, and then rescaping as I learnt new techniques. Particularly due to energy prices, I decided to consolidate to a 200L and a 72L... and fighting the urge for...

    Substrate and plants

Some great feedback here. Just to add I've had amazing plant growth with tropica capsules, and for lighting look out for lights that state 7500k, don't have to spend massive amounts, I bought the cheap versions from allpondsolutions.co.uk.

Never done this with a planted tank

Definitely a possibility. I've used fluval stratum without issue, but remember reading some reviews prior to first purchase where people had experienced amonia spikes. Continue with water changes and it will settle down.

Never done this with a planted tank

Potentially, but only once the plants are well established. I run mostly eco system tanks, including filter less, where the beneficial bacteria in the deep substrate and plants do all the work. But the plants need a few weeks to become properly established (root system), usually with some help...

    New tank problems

Hi Clive, Sounds like a nightmare, and all too common place. So you're aware of the cycle now, Amonia to Nitrite to Nitrate? Do you have a test kit so you can check levels? Some of the fish can be territorial or nippy, if you haven't already, try adding driftwood and plants, places where fish...

Never done this with a planted tank

I'm sure I've read that spikes in Amonia/nitrite can overwhelm the beneficial bacteria which can cause the cycle to take longer. Could try reducing feeding frequency so there's a little less waste being produced.

Never done this with a planted tank

The main difference is that there's potential for more Amonia initially as you get wilting or leaves dying off as the plants acclimatise. Plants mostly feed off Nitrate which is the last part of the process (Amonia to Nitrite to Nitrate). Plants will need to establish before you really notice...
