Water Hyacinth??? don't hear much about it in aquariums???

Used Hyacinth and water lettuce in our pond last year. The Hyacinth was lovely the water lettuce was a failure. The Hyacinth died when temps dropped below 40f. Both wound up in the compost.

    Fish keeping is too stressful

I feel your angst. As newcomers to this hobby Linda and I felt stressed to. We took deep breaths and found this forum. We presented our problems and we also perused the forum history and have found the answers and suggestions that helped us find answers and build some confidence. The stress has...

    Identify please

It looked like white hair in the tank. I was pretty sure it was algae after Remioving it. The white though me off and the fact it seems to have grown in 24 hours.

Journey from dining room to fish room.

Fishbrook Pond was a lovely outing yesterday. The lean-to is in rough shape from what I remember but it has been a dozen years since we have hiked up there. The dogs loved the walk up, but like Linda and me, were less boisterous on the hike back. Much harder to walk downhill than uphill on my...

    10 Tank's fish and tanks

Helicopters have been our bane. Especially late summer early fall. We border dairy country. That means large tracts of well feralized corn. Pot growers grow product within and at the edges of these fields. DEA and local sheriffs fly low with infrared sensors to discover the crops. It goes on...

Journey from dining room to fish room.

Well after the marble fiasco I got lazy. I did pick up the PT lumber and I did frame one of the floors, the one for the gazebo. It was a fast simple job that I thought would be therapeutic after having to tear up the marble. It was not. Then it rained Friday and then scattered showers on...

Raised the filter enough to increase surface agitation but still a gentle flow.

Sometimes I think my fish just want to torture me..

I mean look at physique. Broad shoulder, thin waist, and a flying suit. Looks a bit like the Rock.

    Film on water

Used paper towel as suggested. I wash hands / arms. Pre and post putting them in tanks. I have reminded Linda who uses bountiful amount of lotion. Filter creates a gentle flow. I have several sponge filters on order. Perhaps change the hob when the arrive? No viable decomp on leaf yet. Has...

    Film on water

Big Blue, the half moon Betta, is in 5 gallon tank. About a week ago after some reading I added a Catappa leaf. A free a few days I began noticing a rainbow slick on the water surface. Did the leaf cause this? The water parameters are largely the same Am O Ni 0 Na 5 PH 7.2 .. this is down from...

    What are you doing today?

This morning I cleaned my shop, changed the blade on the Radial and Table saws. I also tuned the compound mitre saw for the first time in two years. Swept the floor and brushed the benches. The sawdust will be used with parafin to make fire starters for us as well as several friends. I give...

    Wood issues???

Chainsaws, regardless of power source use oil to lube the chain. I have both electric and gas chainsaws and they both use the same 30W oil between the chain and bar. Pretty sure some miniscule amount would be on the cut edge of the wood but the majority of any contaminate will be spewed in the...

    Wood issues???

Global shipping is doing much damage by bringing stowaways to places with no natural predation to the pests. In my area alone the elms are gone, the beech are just behind, conifers are under stress, ash are failing to name just a few. That does not even mention the”new” fish species in the...

    Wood issues???

Looks like ambrosia beetle. They attack healthy soft maple as well as unhealthy conifer trees. If I timber right, and I. May not, the red is a result of their farming food. I would boil the wood, or simmer at 165 plus then bake dry at about 225f until dry. Then burnish lightly with a torch. The...

    I need help

Personally I have no confidence in my lfs but some in my not so lfs. These feelings have developed through actual dealings. I have great confidence in this forum and an equal amount in what I read, and I have been reading a lot then refining. I accept the fish stores likely mean well but...

    Extinct fish.

I know little about the macro enviroment but quite a it about my little plot of micro environment. First an actual experience. I live in an area blessed with a multitude of lakes and ponds. Many are only accessible after an arduous hike. One large pond in particular I used to backpack into was...

Journey from dining room to fish room.

GRrrrr ... Finished laying the marble slabs for under the pergola at the fire pit end of the pond yesterday. About 12 hours of hard manual labor, for an old guy anyway. What do you think Linda? "Do not like it" says she. "Me either", says I. Wrong material for the area it is. Did not really...

going to try some mini pumps, for water changes on my 10 gallon holding tanks...

I have been using a pump since the third week of this journey. It is a small pump, about 1.5 bpm. I am never in a hurry when doing the water changes, even on the 37 it only amounts to about 8 minutes. The pump outs are fish observation time.ee dump the new water from gallon jugs. We have 15 of...
