Could a Change of Heating Boiler Affect Water Chemistry

So it's nearly 4 weeks since the emergency happened. I had my tap water tested by the LFS 2 weeks ago and the phosphate level was very high. I went and had the tap water and the tank water tested yesterday, they tested Ph, GH, KH, Nitrate and phosphate on the tap water and all were good which...

Could a Change of Heating Boiler Affect Water Chemistry

Hi all A quick update. All of the fish that we moved into my son's tank have survived and seem to be thriving. All parameters were good when I tested them last weekend. The remaining 6 in the main tank are also still alive, and I had the water from that tank tested by my LFS and the iron was a...

Could a Change of Heating Boiler Affect Water Chemistry

Thanks again everybody. We managed to get all bar around 6 of the fish into my son's aquarium where they seem to be doing ok. We've had no further casualties fortunately. I'm going to test the water in both tanks tomorrow and see where we are. I'll also get to the LFS over the weekend and ask...

Could a Change of Heating Boiler Affect Water Chemistry

Yes, sorry for the confusion, and this post has been sitting as a draft for the last 3 hours. It's my son's tank that hasn't had a water change for some time, mine was probably around a month ago but I have been getting my water tested on a regular basis at my LFS and after he last one they did...

Could a Change of Heating Boiler Affect Water Chemistry

Ok, thank you everybody for your comments and suggestions. I'm busy with work so can't speak to my neighbours until later but when I tested the cold tap water, the hot tap water and also the RO water that I have for my marine tank, they all returned the same result, a tube that looked like...

Could a Change of Heating Boiler Affect Water Chemistry

Hi there I have a Juwel Rio 240 planted tank. I had a replacement heating boiler fitted last week, I had a back boiler which has been replaced by a combi boiler. The work required a lot of pipe realignment and the removal of the main water tank in the loft and the hot water cylinder in the...

My First Attempt at a Planted Aquarium

Blimey, is it really 15 months since I was last here.......My tank was overrun by a) Endlers and b) hair algae. My son moved 6 Endlers from his Betta tank about 9 months ago and they multiplied to around 60, they never stopped breeding. I was very lackadaisical with my maintenance as well and...

Thanks for the tip @StandbySetting, I’ll bear that in mind. I love my Pentazonas @Fishfinder1973, they’re easy to keep, look great and are very peaceful.

Me too. I'm fortunate that I'm a position to get these things. The picture below shows the extent of the issue, a big water change and some gardening to be done on Sunday morning.

My First Attempt at a Planted Aquarium

Thanks all, I've recently replaced the standard lights with the Helialux RGB and control unit. Reading that the daylight bulbs are 900 kelvin and that plants grow at 6,500 I thought I would have a look at how I've set the lighting cycle up. I've set the time that the light is on full to 6 hours...

My First Attempt at a Planted Aquarium

Blimey, I can't believe that it's 4 months since I last updated this. I've been suffering from algae for quite some time, which I'm still trying to get to the bottom of. I've shortened the time the light is on to 7 hours and usually feed every other day. I've now adjusted the light time down...

As I've seen others doing videos I thought I'd have a go. Not the best quality but it shows off the Pentazonas really well.

My First Attempt at a Planted Aquarium

Having been away for a few days it was time to scrape the algae from the front of the tank and do my water change. The algae below the sand level came away quite easily and I managed to vacuum most of it away. My stats/parameters are steady and so I decided I'd like some more fish and so I...

My First Attempt at a Planted Aquarium

Thanks @Rocky998. It doesn't really bother me and if it's doing no harm then I'll leave it for the time being while reducing my lighting window for a few days. I'm away this weekend for the bank holiday so will tell my son to reduce the time the lights are on.

My First Attempt at a Planted Aquarium

I'm having some issues with algae, but it only appears to be affecting half of the tank. The picture below, taken from the side of the tank shows the front nearest the camera is covered in green algae. I know that I need to reduce the light period, it's currently 9 hours and I'll drop that to 7...

Frustrating advice for newcomers to the fish world

Not quite sure what happened here, I tried to edit but I seems I quoted my own earlier post, very odd.

    Whats the website called?

Does anybody else use, or has used, https://www.thinkfish.co.uk/article/community-creator? I can't remember how I came across it but it seems to be a bit limited in the fish that it has available to add to your proposed tank, plus you have to donate to be able to store your potential set up.

My First Attempt at a Planted Aquarium

My son wanted to visit a fish shop in south west London, which because of the traffic turned into a 3 hour round trip! However, I did manage to pick up 11 Celestial Pearl Danios, they are absolutely tiny, but seem to have settled in well. I tried to get a photo of them but they just don't come...

    Poorly Betta

Thank you both for your pontificating, as mentioned I did not have an emergency tank to transfer the fish to so I had to go out and buy one. It was set up in an attempt to save the fish but that ultimately failed. I see arguments on this site for both sides of the "does a betta belong in a...

    Poorly Betta

He was moved to the emergency tank, which was set up from scratch, as he wasn't doing well in the community tank, which has excellent conditions.

    Poorly Betta

Sorry to say but Leaky passed away this evening. My son was in the middle of doing a water test when Leaky suddenly became very active and then just fell to the bottom of the tank. Yesterday's test and the one my son was doing this evening both showed a trace of ammonia and nitrite. I wonder...

My First Attempt at a Planted Aquarium

I don't think the angle of the photo helps as it does look deeper than 2 inches. I did actually measure it with a tape measure after putting it in! There are lots of possibilities for other fish but I'm not sure which direction I want to go in, whether a shoal of larger fish or more cardinals...

    First Fish for tank

Lovely dog. Is he as mad as a box of frogs? A friend has a chocolate lab and he's crazy, although he is getting on a bit now. I'd love to have a greyhound but all the time our cat is here I don't think that's likely to happen! She likes to be the centre of attention. Have you got any up to date...

My First Attempt at a Planted Aquarium

The sand is 2 inches deep, or thereabouts, which should avoid any issues with hydrogen sulphide. I used JBL's substrate calculator to work out how much sand I needed.
