    Decor modification question

Did you read the review on there from someone who used the dragon for their own betta? They said it shredded his fins, etc. Not sure I'd want it in my tank.

    HOB or Canister filter?

Canister, definitely! I have a fluval FX6 and 306 on my mbuna tank and an Eheim Classic 600 - 2217 for my axolotls - they are all awesome.

Brand new Filter leaking? Weird hissing sound? Bubbles?

Its probably just purging any air that is still stuck inside, I wouldn't worry too much. I have a fluval 306 and FX6 on my mbuna tank - the 306 did that a bit when I first set it up, but it settled after an hour or so.

    Hello Newbie here: Tom Falater

Hi Tom, welcome! Algae is caused by a number of factors, but excess light is a big one. If your tank is near a window, this can certainly encourage it. Like you said, it is also easier to maintain a constant temperature without major fluctuations if your tank is away from windows. Extreme heat...

    Tank Cycling Advice

Hi Seal, sorry I just read your last post. I have never heard of Interpret filter start, so I'm sorry I can't be of any help. The ammonia I am currently using to cycle my new 4 foot axolotl tank is Dr Tim's. I am using it in conjuction with Seachem Stability and in my experience everything is...

    Tank Cycling Advice

As I said, I have never used fish food to cycle a tank before and it is a lot harder to control things this way. To get a cycle going you want your ammonia to read 3.0ppm after your initial dose. Not sure how much fish food it would take to achieve this, you're just going to have to go slow and...

    Tank Cycling Advice

The bacteria need some form of ammonia to stay alive - either in bottled form (I use Dr Tim's) or fish food (although I've never used this method as it is a lot harder to control the amount of ammonia you are adding). If there is no ammonia from the tank, the bacteria will die and you will need...

    What Is This

Might be brown diatoms? They are normal in new tanks.

    Sw Setup

Hi Bettas, I have no experience with SW tanks - the cost and experience involved are out of my comfort zone :) but one thing missing from your list was an API saltwater test kit. I only  thought of this because I was doing a few tests on my cycling axie tank while looking at your post :)

    The Axies Are Coming!

I stained my cabinet earlier this evening so the job for tomorrow will be to add a few coats of clear laquer and then paint the back wall of the tank (I use chalkboard paint so it is a matte black). I am having trouble uploading photos - they all get rejected because they are too big, but then I...

    The Axies Are Coming!

Yes nic1 I am planning on it! :)   My tank and cabinet arrived a day earlier than expected! They are now both in place. Hopefully I will get a chance to make some good progress over the weekend, starting with staining the cabinet and painting the backwall. Looking forward to taking some pics for...

    The Axies Are Coming!

Equipment list so far:   4 foot tank and matching cabinet (cabinet will need to be stained as it comes in raw pine) - roughly 52 gallons/200 litres Eheim classic 600 ( I am normally a fluval person but I liked the fact that Eheim comes with a spraybar) Fluval Eco bright LED - the levels of light...

    Axolotl's

Hi Bettas, it gets really hot here too where I am in Australia. I asked about the water bottles and was told that as long as you have good filtration (but still gentle enough for the axies) they do a good job. I got a really long thermometer so I can see what the temp is at the bottom instead of...

    Axolotl's

Hey Nick I am in the process of setting up a 4 foot axie tank and this was my main concern as well. I live in NSW and it gets pretty hot here in Jan/February.   I did a lot of research and asked around other axie owners (including Alasse here on the forums), as well as my very knowledgeable LFS...

    Alasse's Tanks

hey Alasse, do you have any experience with having axies in planted tanks? I would love to have some in the future, might be a future project - but I read that they don't like bright light - so was wondering how ppl grow plants while not stressing out the axies with light. Does that make sense...

    Alasse's Tanks

Hey Alasse, love your tanks! Quick question - how do you keep your axies cool during summer? I live in NSW and have always wanted some axies, but just worry about keeping them at the right temp during Dec/Jan/Feb.

    Painting A Tank Background

I use black chalkboard paint on all my tanks - an easy way to hide inlet pipes etc and the fish really stand out. Gives a nice matte finish - you dont want a shiny surface.
