Filtration and a properly cycled tank is especially important for ANY aquatic animal, I really wish certain fish stores (You know who you are) would quit propagating the fallacy that these are "just add water" pets. Edit: anything less than a 10 gallon would be too difficult for a beginner IMO...

Thank you Akasha. She made it through the procedure okay, and they found a small ulcer that was well no it's way to being healed, but now she's not waking up. If they can't wean her off the ventilator soon, she may need to have a trachea tube installed, and I'm not sure she can handle another...

I think people are misunderstanding the goal of this formula. This is not intended to create a magical calculator that tells you everything you need to know when stocking a tank, that is practically impossible. What I am aiming for is a formula that will determine maximum stocking rates...

Edit: I've just realized that in my previous reply, I mis-stated the green terrors as jack dempsey. It doesn't really matter though, as green terrors are even more territorial than dempseys... Edit2: Maybe this formula should be disregarded for highly aggro species, like many of the rift lake...

One simple solution to this problem that I've read is to use two heaters ,each rated for half your tank's capacity, at opposite ends of the tank. That way, BOTH heaters would have to malfunction at the same time to cause any serious problems.

Agree with Stevenf red lava rock is LIGHT it actually feels more like holding a piece of wood than a rock, weight-wise. Epithytes like java moss, anubias etc. root very well in it, so I hear.

I'd up the water changes to 50% myself, otherwise, it sounds great to me.   EDIT: I don't think it would be wise to try to do anything to the impeller uneless you are noticing reduced flow or increased noise. You know what they say: If it's not broke, don't fix it!

That is the exact goal of this formula, which is much more in-depth than that. I mean, seriously, surely we can do better than "The inch per gallon rule is junk, (it is) just follow your intuition!" Math can be used to estimate so many things, I don't see why a proper formula couldn't be found...

As long as it's a snug fit and doesn't cause backup/bypass I shouldn't think it would matter.  Might be a good idea to replace the sponges a week or so apart to avoid a potential mini-cycle. Too much caution is better than not enough, IMO.

I've been working hard  to calculate a reliable stocking formula to replace the highly flawed inch per gallon/square foot formula, as well as the impractical and slightly flawed gram per gallon formula. This has taken many, many hours of my spare time, using trial and error to tweak the formula...

Also, while we're on the subject of what not to add to the tank, I would avoid adding anything containing copper to a tank with shrimp or snails

Just be sure when you do get the ammonia that there is no soap in it. Ideally, the only things on the ingredient list should be Ammonia and /or water, but "chelating compounds/agents" are ok too.   Incidentally, if his tank is a standard rectangular 25 gallon the dimensions should be: 24 x 12 x...

Assasin snails are known to kill and eat shrimplets. Not much he can do about that food source...

Actually, I was in a hurry this morning and misread the maximum size of the spotted raphael cat as being 18 inches, instead of six. Still, I would say 55 gallons is not bige enough for all three fish as adults. I would recommend at least 75 gallons, and that would be with double or better...

Do you have a good (preferably drops) test kit? Imo your fishkeeping tools, in order of importance, should be: 1: dechlorinator 2:(tie) good food, some way to change the water 3: A good test kit for ph, ammonia, nitrates, nitrites 4: a net 5: other

I wouldn't consider mollies beginners fish either, IMHO platies would be a better choice, but only if you have hard water, as stated, soft water will slowly kill them, and the opposite is true for the neons, which are slowly killed by hard water.

Sorry to hear about that. Myself having had a beautiful  tank that completely crashed after moving, (not enough research on my part) I know it can be pretty discouraging when something like this happens, but I would encourage you to hang in there.

If I may, I think I have a better solution. AFTER your new tank finishes cycling, divvy up your existing groups of fish, according to which ones would better tolerate two preset temperatures, like say 75f for one tank and 80 for the other. Then you should have plenty of room to keep all of them...

  About that, there seems to be a common misunderstading between hardness and PH, one that I admit being a victim of myself until recently... I believe a  it could be somewhat worded as a chicken or the egg scenario except this one has a definite answer, which is explained quite well in post 20...

What temperature is the water?

I feel the need to elaborate a bit on my temperature situation. While my heater is currently set to come on at 24c (about 75 F), the ambient temperature in the house will be about 78-79f (26c) or maybe even a bit higher in the summer, and I've .read that aquariums often go a couple degrees...
