    75 Gallon

The other fish I haven't much researched, but I have extensively researched Maximum size and recommended housing for Oscars. The IGFA world record for oscars is 1.58 kilos, or three pounds, eleven ounces. If your fish were to reach what is considered Trophy weight, or 75% of that, it would...

    19L Fluval spec stocking.

In my humble opinion, one of the best tank mates for a betta in a tank this small would be a single nerite, of her favorite color pattern, but only after the tank has been running a month or two, to allow the filter bacteria to become well established, and also it would be a good idea to wait...

    19L Fluval spec stocking.

Agree completely with Byron. In addition, many of the newly introduced "micro" species of fish in the hobby, which are about the size of a neon tetra, can possibly be eaten by bettas, while any schooling fish (icluding ottos) larger than this would be too large for the tank. Shrimp smaller...

Help! My platys are paralyzed and sink!

The fact that your pet store told you that the ammonia was "normal" and the nitrites and nitrates are "off" without giving actual numbers raises a red flag for me. Agree with Colin on the frequent water changes and feeding sparingly. The majority of fish have tiny stomachs compared to mammals.

    Shrimp fighting? meeting? whats happening?

Is this the armored species? https://www.theshrimpfarm.com/posts/vampire-shrimp/ Didn't realize that filter feeder shrimp would be territorial, but in any case, it is unlikely that your tank is large enough to provide both with enough food without supplemental feeding. This involves spot feeding...

    A third wheeling Cory????

If one of the cories is a misidentified bronze Cory that was mistaken for an emerald, this would explain the "third Wheel" behavior, as cories generally tend to only school with their own species, unless out of desperation when feeling particularly insecure, like for example, arriving at a new...

    Need Immediate Help

80 degrees is a bit high for panda cories, they are native to mountain areas in Peru. https://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=267 In the above link, Planet catfish recommends no higher than 77 degrees Fahrenheit, or 25 Celsius.

New Betta is hanging out at the top of tank

I would say anubias, Java fern and Java moss would grow under about any light, but just in case, how many led are in the unit?

New Betta is hanging out at the top of tank

Indeed, water changes are the best thing for the long term health of any fish :) Is the modern art the only decor? If so, this easily explains his shyness and I would suggest more cover. Standard lighting on an aquarium is often insufficient for the majority of common aquarium plants, save the...

New Betta is hanging out at the top of tank

Glad to hear that Mr Fiji is feeling better, just keep up those water changes, and he should continue to improve. It might take a month or so for the tank to fully establish a Nitrogen cycle, until then, I recommend twice weekly 50%+ water changes, even more often if you have the time.

    New tank, stocking help pls

In general guppies and endlers are not compatible with ember tetra, with the the tetras doing best in soft water, and the guppies and enders needing at least slightly hard water. I have also heard reports of large female guppies attacking even adults of the slightly smaller male cherry shrimp.

Overstocking? Tank size vs. filtration capacity

While Aqadvisor does give a somewhat more accurate ballpark than inches per gallon, (not really a high bar to set, frankly) I have noticed that it tends to miss a lot of incompatibility issues, and often underestimates both the bioload of larger fish, and the minimum tank size for semi...

    Syd gets a new home!

IMHO regarding betta tank size, I think a five gallon is sufficient for one male betta, as long as he has adequate cover, and I think many would be happier with a five gallon to himself than sharing a ten gallon with any other fish. I feel that from the betta's point of view, once you get about...

Agree with Colin on getting a pump rated slightly better than the minimum that you need, most equipment is rated for perfect world conditions, not real world.

    Sick Albino Cory Catfish

Poor guy's in a bad way. :( I agree with Colin on the large water change (mind the heater, out of water they can explode unless turned off) but frankly, it doesn't look good.

What to do if your fish gets sick

Very useful article, especially for beginners In particular the warning about Identifying the problem before treating it. I feel that a lot of harm can be done by using the incorrect medication with good intentions.

Overstocking? Tank size vs. filtration capacity

Sorry, went off on a bit of a tangent. Anyway a standard 29 gallon is 18" tall by 30" long, and 12" front to back. (I should know, measured mine dozens of times, lol.) I am not an expert in stocking, but I feel adding more fish might be pushing it once they all reach full size...

Overstocking? Tank size vs. filtration capacity

Inches per gallon is pretty much a useless comparison. The three main factors in determining when a tank is overloaded are: 1:Room for adequate exercise. Generally a tank should be at least 5 (for inactive fish like bushy nose pleco) to 8 (for very active fish like glow light danios) times the...

New Betta is hanging out at the top of tank

    Betta and honey gourami?

It is a chancy proposition at best in my opinion, very unlikely to work unless you get lucky and get exceptionally tolerant individuals of both species. Even then neither would appreciate the presence of the other, since as mentioned Labrynth fish tend to be especially territorial to in their...

    Syd gets a new home!

I highly recommend a filter as the next item on the to do list for syd, preferably a low powered one to avoid generating too much current While he would also appreciate the planned decor additions, a filter of some kind is the absolute best thing to add for the sake of his health. Wishing your...

    Snake skin gourami

Your aquarium sounds like it would be fully stocked, if not overstocked, after you Increase the schooling fish (Rainbowfish, cories, Platies) to the recommended minimum of six of the same species. In addition, the snakeskin may well eat the Platies, if the angelfish don't do so upon reaching...

    Not seeing signagures

I have not seen signatures in quite some time including my own, despite unchecking the "collapse signatures" option in my preferences. Is this due to signatures not being supported on mobile devices? (I have only logged in on my phone within the least year)

    Syd gets a new home!

I agree with your opinion on tank mates, Phil. 2.5 gallons is really the absolute minimum required for a betta, with several sources recommending 5-10 gallons for better temperature and chemical stability. In addition There is no reason to give him tank mates for his happiness, as Bettas are...

    Fin Nipper

As stated earlier, a list of your current aquarium stock would be of great assistance in helping us help you find the culprit. Male Guppies Male Bettas, and other longfin fish are more prone to developing finrot without any nipping from other fish, due both to the long fins being more likely to...

    Snake skin gourami

Agree with Byron and Colin, Snakeskin Gourami are very peaceful for thier size, but do get fairly large. Fishbase states a maximum length of 25cm (about 10") and a maximum weight of 500 grams (about one pound, two ounces). Based on studies I have seen on captive VS wild maximum weight it is a...

Help! My filter has broken, what should I do?

You will need to replace the filter asap, if haven't already. When you do, try to get some of the filter medium from the old filter into the new one, to save any surviving filter bacteria.

A tip for anyone checking a framed aquarium for level

Got what I needed, the yoga mats and anti fatigue mats looked to not be firm enough, so I got a black waterproof shelf liner. It's only as thick as a credit card, but a roll has enough to double it, going to trimtrim it to fit the whole top of the stand for extra waterproofing, pressed as hard...

A tip for anyone checking a framed aquarium for level

Not yet, finally got it level, but one corner is raised just barely above the hardwood stand. When it was empty, I was able to run a business card (about 0.5mm) almost all the way along one side, including under one corner. Could also fit a credit card (almost exactly 0.75mm) 2inches under same...

A tip for anyone checking a framed aquarium for level

Ater just about driving myself crazy trying to get my 29 gallon tank level, I realized that the top frame is very slightly crooked. Specifically, it was assembled with the back right corner about a mm higher than the front left. Instead, I rested the level on the top of the bottom frame, which...

It's actually illegal to even do this in my state, for fear of introducing a disease or parasite that the fish may have picked up while in captivity.

How fish can be present in 4th floor without adding by somebody

Have heard of water birds (and Presumably others, like Jays, crows, etc.) carrying fish to other bodies of water before attempting to eat them, then accidentally dropping the still living fish as one method of wild fish moving between bodies of water. In the case of guppies, it only takes a...

    Toxic for Cherry Shrimp?

From what I have seen online, the only warning about growing philodendron in this way in an aquarium is to be careful to keep the roots away from the impeller. The chemical in philodendron that puts it on toxic plant lists is oxalic acid, also found in rhubarb leaves, and as far as I know...

    Chiclids co exhisting

I did say it was a loose and imperfect analogy. For one thing, dogs are social animals that like to be in groups whereas cichlids are almost universally not.

    Chiclids co exhisting

Sounds like (to use a loose and imperfect analogy) that different species of the less aggressive cichlid are like cats and dogs. Many of the social cues of the two species do no match up in the least, and while there are some individuals that can get along, this hardly means that it's a good...

Not sure if this indicates blindness or not. In any case, I think he would have sensed your hand with his lateral line, blind or not.

    Chiclids co exhisting

My mistake, I was assuming from all the posts I had seen through the internet of a Cichlid pair being OK in their community until they bred that the breeding was related. Maybe it was actually the pair hitting maturity that caused the mayhem, in which case a single fish would make no difference.
