Seeding a filter with used media to cycle

if your using cycled/established filter media and moving it to a new tank, then there is no need to cycle the tank....it is ready for fish right away, i have a 180 gallon tank with 5 cycled sponge filters in it, when i get a preggo fish, i fill up one of my empty 30 gallon tank then take one of...

    Heater question this time...lol

Lol....i think your being way too OCD, fish arn't even going to notice one degree, most probably would not even notice a 5 degree swing if it was very gradual, in the wild the water temps vary constantly, if you walk outside could you tell the difference of 1 degree? if you were comfortable...

    Heater question this time...lol

it means one or possible BOTH of your thermometers are not calibrated properly, i have about 4-5 of those digital thermometers (only because i got them for free over the years packaged with other items i purchased)....every one of them is sitting in a box collecting dust because (in my...

i never move fry or eggs, leave them put.... egg layers.....i move the parents out of the tank and leave the eggs alone livebearers.....put in seperate tank alone, after they give birth remove the mother and leave fry by themselves

Fry in Tank, how to W/C, etc. And UNIQUE female. And tank pics.

this is why its best to raise fry in a bare bottom tank, my fry tanks only have a sponge filter and a heater.....thats it.....its make cleaning and water changes easy, and its also healthy for the fry

    Weight down an ornament

nobody would make an aquarium ornament like that, that floated....you just have air trapped under it.... when you put it in the tank turn it upside down at first until it is under the water surface to make sure no air is trapped underneath

    Overstocked?

i would consider you max stocked with the angelfish and corys alone

    Aquaclear HOB Filters

thats normal.....you should fill the filter with water before plugging it in.....i believe that is in the instructions
  10. mikey11

    Aquaclear HOB Filters

haha....i remember those!!!! that design was the first filter i ever had when i started fish keeping in the 80's the new design is much better.....i have about 6-8 aquaclear 500/110 filters.....i use two foam inserts in them.....excellent filters!!!! they do the same job, if not better then...

    warm weather & tank temperatures

90% or maybe even more of your bacteria are in your filter media.....thats why you should not replace it until absolutely nessessary.....i have some filter foam that is 4-5 years old
  14. mikey11

    warm weather & tank temperatures

i turn all my heaters off in the summer.....my tanks in summer sometimes go up to 86F.....never worried about it or had problems.....in my opinion too cold is far worse then too hot
  15. mikey11

    warm weather & tank temperatures

you are worrying way too much....temps vary drastically in the wild....its nothing to worry about 82F is nothing....i wouldnt worry unless it got to 95+

    Fighting Angels

no...they lay them on vertical surfaces, like filter tubes, plant leaves, sometimes even heaters, however they will probably end up eating them very quickly
  17. mikey11

    Fighting Angels

that is normal, its a sign they are getting ready to breed, when mine did that i would have eggs within a few days
  18. mikey11

    Fighting Angels

describe in DETAIL how they are "fighting" are they being injured?....are fins getting nipped?....etc etc? does it look like they are "kissing" each other in an aggressive way?.....that is a sign they are getting ready to breed and its not fighting at all

    Angelfish Dying Overnight! Please help

a 20 gallon tank is too small for even one angelfish
  20. mikey11

I got a new aquarium stand

the strength in the stand comes from the design....not the material its made from, many aquarium stands ARE made of particle board, but the design can still carry the weight
  21. mikey11

I got a new aquarium stand

the cast iron stand looks more stable then the wood stand IMO, that wood stand is not made to support the weight of an aquarium that size

Plz help How do i clean out fry trap without losing fry

i use a piece of rigid airline tubing connected to flexible airline tubing to syphon the bottom of my fry tanks, the rigid tubing gives you better control, i cut the rigid tubing about the same height as the tank, then a piece of flexible tubing down into a bucket

    Selling fish online business

guppies and livebearers are so cheap to buy and easy to breed, i can't really see how you would make anything on them after your expenses, i have bred discus and angelfish in very large quantities before, at my peak i had about 120 tanks going, even with those kinds of fish i wasnt making much...

Rocks from beach.. are these safe?

did you know....in Britain it is against the law to be drunk at a pub ?
  26. mikey11

Rocks from beach.. are these safe?

they are fine..... soak them in a bucket of water for a few days, then rinse them off and put them in your tank, i never understood why people pay 10 or 20 bucks for a rock at a LFS when you can find them for free
  27. mikey11

Water changes - how much is too much?

there is no "set in stone" rule for water changes.....too many variables come into play, every tank is different my tanks range from 50% every day.....all the way to 25% once a week
  28. mikey11

Foam at the top of water?

have you been sticking your hands in the tank without rinsing all the soap off?
  29. mikey11

Hi all!! I need some help.

what do you mean by this? are you using the same filter on the new tank?
  30. mikey11

    Does this look like dropsy?

signs of dropsy....yes the scales are "pine-coned"
  31. mikey11

    Problem with accidental discus

in all honesty....no offense....the humane thing to do would be to sell him (or even give him away if you have to) to somebody who KNOWS what they are doing, and can provide a proper home for him unless you are willing to buy a bigger tank in the next couple of weeks (50 gallon minimum) and...

Electric shock from a aquarium vacuum?

i would never put my hands in a tank with anything electrical plugged in.....that includes heaters and filters, water and electricity do not mix well....one shock with your hand in water could kill you
  33. mikey11

Green algae forming on substrate. How do I stop it?!

regular gravel vacuuming will get rid of any substrate algae, it is basically turning the substrate over,
  34. mikey11

    Green water

a good cleaning should clear it up..... - syphon gravel - scrape glass of any algae - 50% water change - clean filter give it a few days to clear up.....maybe another 50% water change in 3-4 days do not feed fish for 2-3 days....and when you start feeding again cut way back
  35. mikey11

    Water additives

agreed.....i have had some of my filter sponges for over 5 years this might sound ironic...... but in all my years of fish keeping, i have found the WORST place to get advice is at a fish store
  36. mikey11

    Water additives

all you really need is a dechlorinator to use after water changes....no need for anything else
  37. mikey11

What live food can I feed my tropical fish?

if you want to get creative you can hatch live baby brine shrimp.....its what i feed most of my fry, angelfish and discus, although pretty much any tropical fish will eat it and love it....
  38. mikey11

    Things getting toasty......

i think i jinxed myself by making this comment, just had one of my 300w jagars fail, i just got home from being away for 2 days and the temp in one of my 100 gallon tanks is at 63F.....tanks normal temp is 80F the light in the heater is ON but its not heating, good thing my LFS provides a...
  39. mikey11

    Things getting toasty......

even a GFCI outlet may not save you.....the safest thing to do is just UNPLUG ALL HEATERS AND FILTERS before putting your hands in the tank
  40. mikey11
