    Substrate

Macro nutrients are fine to front-load (NPK); but, in terms of micro-nutrients, it is better to do smaller more frequent dosings throughout the week. This becoming even more important in high-tech environments (in presence of Co2 and high lighting) with fast growing stem plants I do an all-in...

Cycled Fluval Flex 15 Stocking ideas?

How about some of the micro-rasbora species? Could do Microrasbora kubotai, which is this wonderful ( very lively!) emerald green rasbora that does well in planted aquariums. I have 24 in a heavily planted tank- a 30 gallon- with a group of caradina baubaulti shrimp and a couple "Orange"...

    enough with the advertising

You were the only one that made me feel welcome in this forum when I joined over a week ago. I thank you for that. Instead of being criticized, you should actually be given more of an "up front and center role" in this forum to KEEP new members here.

    Hi!

Thank you for your welcome. I do appreciate it. Let me explain what I meant: On day one, one of your moderators was so sensitive of their ego and authority that they threatened to "take action against me" `lol! Ive been on ( and am on) many aquarium forums for plants, fish, specialty/niche...

    Hi!

I may, thank you. But, dont think this forum is a good fit for me. Thats fine, it happens- cant be all to everyone.

What disease is this!?!?! And what should I do!?!?!

Because of the severity of the case, Its too bad that you were not given alternative drugs to use instead of having to wait 2 days.

What disease is this!?!?! And what should I do!?!?!

Ill keep my nose out of the health/illness section. Seems like its already covered by a resident crew. No worries. Dint mean to ruffle your feathers.

I came home to a dead betta..

It may stress the fish minimally, but 2 ppm of nitrites can kill the fish . So, the trade-off is well worth it.
  12. Lilyann

I came home to a dead betta..

Another one, right now. back to back until nitrites no longer register.
  13. Lilyann

I came home to a dead betta..

Absolutely. You are trying to counter any possible effects from the nitrite exposure. This takes time. Put back salt that take out for at least 3 more days.
  14. Lilyann

I came home to a dead betta..

Keep going, you are almost there. Back to back water changes until no nitrites.

    Excellent recommendation.

    Hi!

I use Thrive All-in-1 ferts from NILOCG. It is the mix for low-tech. I dont do Co2 because of the sensitivity of my fish. The substrate is inert in 30 gallon. In the 9 gallon I used Controsoil. My shrimp tanks get a 1/2 dose of liquid ferts. These plants are all low light, so dont need alot of...

What disease is this!?!?! And what should I do!?!?!

I am no where near an aquatic vet. But, I can help you with diagnosis. I am sure of it. Remember, we are only as good as the information that the member provides. But, it is our responsibility if helping with illnesses to look at it in its entirety. It is a complex process that takes...

    Hi!

It is a 9 gallon Fluvel Flex. I kinda wish now that I had gotten the 15 gallon- the back filter reservoir area takes up alot of tank. Its a great tank despite. Perfect for shrimp-=only set-up. Here is my 30 gallon shrimp tank. This tank has 24 Microrasbora kubotai and 2 hypoptopoma "Orange...

What disease is this!?!?! And what should I do!?!?!

Okay, let me understand this. So, when you are unsure of a diagnosis you recommend nitrofurazone and kanamycin in combination as a rule. Thats interesting- very unorthodox. What is it in each drug ( active ingredients alone) and used together (in combination) makes it such a good treatment for...

What disease is this!?!?! And what should I do!?!?!

I entirely agree- for the problem of columnaris. Is this what you are gathering this is? It is possible: the gills, the mouth rot. So, if that is what you are saying I am on board. I am not challenging you, I am truely asking your thinking. If that is something that is not allowed here or...

    Hi!

Golden Bee Shrimp. Nothing too fancy. I like the wildforms the best. Right now, in a 30 gallon tank I have wild-form neocaradina and caradina baubaulti.

Looking For Sand Sifting Fish Under 4 Inches (10cm)

The OP will need to make adjustments to bottom dwellers, yes. The biotodoma cupido's would be fine as only residents of bottom of tank. It is very doable in tank this size. I agree, I would not do Acara's in this size tank. But, that is a different issue than the suitability of the cupido's...

    Using alder cones

If the tannins (stain) from Alder cones is what you are interested in getting by adding to aquarium, then the visible aspect of these tannins will likely be taken out with carbon. But, the acidifying/antibacterial properties of alder cones will still be predominately active in tank water. In...

I came home to a dead betta..

I agree with above, but would also add that I would include salt in water changes to counteract any damage nitrite levels have contributed to Brown Blood disease in exposed fish. https://agrilifecdn.tamu.edu/fisheries/files/2013/09/Nitrite-Poisoning-or-Brown-Blood-Disease-A-Preventable-Problem.pdf

Your nitrite is truly 5ppm? Or did you put this down wrong? What is ammonia?

Thought I would quickly introduce myself... and share a few pictures of my tanks. I am a life-time fish-keeper ( 3 decades and counting :) ) and am involved in many different online forums ( not social media) and my local aquarium fish/aquarium plant societies. I have several tanks going at...

Looking For Sand Sifting Fish Under 4 Inches (10cm)

A good candidate for this would be either biotodoma cupido or wavarinii. This is a beautiful ( smaller) eartheater species that is not at all shy. They are gregarious and will quickly form a hierarchy in aquarium, so it is best to have at least a group of 5. Mine range from as small as 2.5...

What disease is this!?!?! And what should I do!?!?!

Well, I was waiting on @Deanasue 's diagnosis- why both the nitrofurazone and kanaymcin are needed. Active ingredients are used because of "x" reasons, of course; so, I will wait for @Deanasue to guide us on these active ingredients/reasons.
  32. Lilyann

What disease is this!?!?! And what should I do!?!?!

So, your diagnosis is what? Why recommend both kanamycin and nitrofurazone?
  33. Lilyann

What disease is this!?!?! And what should I do!?!?!

Yes, you are right, @Deanasue you are dealing with ammonia's after-effects. The symptoms are clear that the exposure was there- not in the 2.5 gallon tank, but in the 10 gallon tank which OP has had issues with ammonia since adding fish. I have no problem going directly to antibiotic- that is...

What disease is this!?!?! And what should I do!?!?!

Excellent- just use salt, water changes, lower temp. If you see other signs then can shift gears. Water quality maintenance and cycling will be your focus. Make sure do at least 25% daily water changes to aid in healing of fish gill tissues. This will go along way in helping fishes immune system...
  35. Lilyann

What disease is this!?!?! And what should I do!?!?!

What you need to determine is if this issue is strictly external to gills or internal as well. When you are dealing with gill issues ( such as from ammonia toxicity)- the line between internal and external bacterial infection ( and secondary fungus) is a fine one. You can use the salt, water...

What disease is this!?!?! And what should I do!?!?!

Actually, what is your pH? That will determine the med most effective to use.
  37. Lilyann

What disease is this!?!?! And what should I do!?!?!

That uncycled, 2.5 gallon tank is going to be very difficult to keep stable. Much more difficult than if you would have just left your fish in the 10 gallon and did regular water changes to ensure no ammonia/nitrite exposure. Its good that you have a quarantine/hospital tank now that will be...
  38. Lilyann

What disease is this!?!?! And what should I do!?!?!

That is a very low dose of salt- the type of fish you have has been considered in that dose. Yes, use the salt.
  39. Lilyann

What disease is this!?!?! And what should I do!?!?!

Need to slow down here and focus. No amount of medication is going to do any good if you do not get water quality under control. The tank, for whatever reason is still not cycled, and need to do water changes as often as needed so that the fish are not exposed to ammonia. You do not do this (...
