Ahh see I'm from Canada so my mind immediately went to Canadian islands. I'll check out the link. :)

    Occupation

Which one? There are multiple in Canada but Devon Island is the biggest uninhabited island in the world. I used to work in the rockies and we did backcountry trips on horseback. Does that count? You could always become a Park Ranger or something too if horses aren't your thing.

    Quick Question

Plus if the fish they sell keep getting sick/dying then it's more likely that the customer will keep coming back for replacements and/or medications. All about the $$$. Though I'm sure like with any species there are responsible breeders out there somewhere.

    Quick Question

I'm not sure about TB but dwarfs are prone to dwarf gourami disease. That's exactly what I was thinking, profits. Big chain pet stores don't care where their fish come from as long as they have enough to stock their tanks.

    Recommended pH?

Harlequin rasboras, serpae tetra, or emperer tetras could work. Most tetra have been mass bred and don't know what their ideal pH is so as long as you acclimate them and keep it consistent you should be good. Looking online a lot of sources give a broad pH range because there isn't a single...

I would be one of those really weird kit kat flavors that comes out for a limited time that people are curious about but don't usually try. Those that do either love it or hate it, no in-between. (:

    Another rescue hamster!

I'm sorry to hear about your hamster. A little pro-tip if you ever get another one is that you can DIY some large storage bins as an enclosure for them. They're cheap and you get a lot more floor space for them vs a tank.

    Occupation

Currently I'm a Conservation Biology student who wants to be Wildlife Biologist or something along those lines. To be honest I haven't figured out the exact job that I want, but I'm just trying to feel out my field of interest. Ideally I want to work in a National Park in the mountains away from...

WTH with the water pH shooting alkaline

As far as I know most ottos are wild caught and very sensitive. Acclimation will be a huge pain for sure and they need a lot of algae to thrive. Most starve to death before even getting to your tank. It could be that you had a bad batch that was already on the brink of death. Did they look skinny?

Pleco has redness on edge of fin

Okay I don't know what that is, but my betta had the same thing on his ventral fin when I first got him. As far as I know it can happen when the fish is stressed. His blood clot looking thing went away when the tank finally cycled. I stupidly did a fish-in cycle.

He's such a pretty color. Once he settles in and unclamps his fins you should post more pictures!

Need help asap with my tank please!

Yeah I have no idea how to modify that, I have a hob. Even if there isn't uneaten food that many fish will create a lot of waste which isn't being removed by enough WCs. In such a low volume of water it will accumulate very quickly. Over time parameters will get worse. I don't want to overwhelm...

Need help asap with my tank please!

Unfortunately soaking the new floss in the old water won't do anything because the beneficial bacteria live ON the filter media not in the water. Do you have a hob filter? If so I would add some course sponge and ceramic rings. Both of those won't breakdown nearly as fast as the filter floss and...

    Beneficial bacteria

Yes a large water change and good gravel vac will help. If the filter media is clogged give it a good rinse in old tank water.

Need help asap with my tank please!

That is simply not true about there not being enough plants and OP only has the lights on for 8 hours per day. Plenty of unplanted tanks don't have green algae issues. The issue is not due to a lack of plants it's caused by an excess of nutrients in the water column and a lack of water...

Need help asap with my tank please!

Oh okay. I interpreted this part as meaning you changed your filter media. Cleaning the inside of the filter is fine, just not changing the media. What do you mean you try to reuse it? You can just put it back into your filter after your clean out the filter itself. Do you use filter cartridges?

Need help asap with my tank please!

I just noticed your stocking which is a bit of a mess.. the tank is incredibly overstocked which would contribute to WAY too many organics being present in the water. In short, your bioload is really high and you're not doing near enough water changes to balance it out. In combination with the...

Need help asap with my tank please!

I have sand too, it just takes some finesse. Just skim the surface of the sand. Over feeding can also be a contributing factor. Once a month water change is no where near enough imo. I would recommend doing weekly water changes of at least 50%. This is probably why you're having a hard time with...

Need help asap with my tank please!

Excess organics can also be present in the tank if you do not use a gravel vacuum to remove uneaten food and waste. It is important to use a gravel vacuum for water changes. How often do you change your water and how much? Too few water changes in combination with not vacuuming can cause green...

    Sick betta

The stability? Do you mean water parameters? If so then no, it shouldn't be different if you are using the same source water and it is close to your tank's parameters. If you're concerned you can test your source (aka water change water) and your tank to see if there is a drastic difference in...

    Tell me something funny

I forgot to mention that when Jax was a kitten he would go in-between the shower curtains (behind the clear one) and watch you shower. He's very much a velcro cat who follows me literally everywhere. He's also quite comfortable on your shoulders and will sometimes jump up on them if you're...

    Tell me something funny

Okay, so my cat Jax is the weirdest cat I've ever met. For one, he will stare at you while you go to the washroom and then will run over to the toilet to watch it flush. He's also rubber so he contorts into the weirdest positions and likes to explore odd places. Sorry in advance for the all the...

    Sick betta

I second never having had issues with large water changes. I regularly do 60% weekly water changes and have changed up to 80% before. Large WCs don't shock the fish or cause death. However, what can shock the fish is if there is a big temp difference between new water and tank water so it is...

Vote Now! - June 2022 Fish of the Month Contest (Bettas)

This is my 3 year old betta Spike. He's a blue marble dragon scale plakat. He's a pretty shy guy, but he's also very curious. He loves checking out random objects that I'll hold up to the tank. For an old man he's quite active too and loves patrolling ever inch of his tank. In between patrols of...

Stocking Hard Water Tank 30gal (113L)

First of all, gorgeous tank. Some smaller cichlids come to mind: Rainbow Kribensis, Electric yellow labs, Apistogramma cacatuoides, Apistogramma borellii. Although, you might still be able to keep pearl gouramis. A lot of commercially bred fish are very tolerant of harder water these days...

    Tips for dealing with stress?

Ohh! I misunderstood. I see, I felt the same way once upon a time until I noticed a huge difference in my overall mood and functioning. It's definitely a personal choice and not for everyone but I strongly believe that medications can be hugely beneficial. Especially when meds are taken while...
