    Sad Week

Thank you. I tried to take every precaution to minimize his stress and added his plants for cover to the bucket he was in, but he just wasn't the same after I put him back in his tank. :( Oooo I like it. I would have never thought of that name!

    Sad Week

I'm also going to have to get smaller food for her since Mick mostly ate the s/m cichlid bug bites. I'm going to get the betta formula, but does anyone else have food suggestions for a small betta? Frozen foods on deck: mini bloodworms, brine shrimp and tubifex worms.

    Sad Week

Last week my betta Mick passed away shortly after I moved 3 hours to a new city. I don't know if it was the move or his age that did him in, but he seemed super stressed the whole car ride. I was devastated as he was my first fish and I had him for almost 4 years. After staring at the empty tank...

Maybe this isn't the best hobby for clumsy people

Oh yeah I don't even try to stop the water spillages during WCs anymore. I just put a towel down and deal with them after lol.

Can’t seem to get him healthy.

Diamond eye is most common in dragon scale bettas. It causes the betta to be blind, but many fish with the condition live long lives. Measures should be taken such as not changing his decor and feeding in the same spot with a signal to let him know it is feeding time. Other than that as long as...

Can’t seem to get him healthy.

He has diamond eye. It's an uncurable condition where the scales grow over the betta's eyes.

Is there something wrong with my betta?

Stress coat is just a water conditioner with aloe vera in it, it won't treat any diseases. I wouldn't recommend using it either because the aloe vera in it isn't good for fish. It can clog up gills and promote excess slime coat production because it is an irritant. Prime is the only water...

    Do they need extra care?

I know there are some online breeders that ship wilds, not sure of the best ones to use though. To answer some of your other questions, yes, wild types often require specific parameters, usually much more acidic than most tap water. Their tolerance threshold for pH and gH are much smaller than...

Looking for a fish to help keep platy fry population under control

I didn't mention it in my other post, but bettas are a naturally aggressive and territorial fish. The likelihood of getting a betta that will be peaceful in a community tank and not harass the other fish is very, very low. They do not do well in community tanks and prefer their own space/territory.

Is there something wrong with my betta?

No, but an alum dip or hydrogen peroxide mixture will get rid of any hitch hikers on the plants before you add them to the tank. Floating plant recommendations: elodea is very hearty or if you want true surface floaters you could try some amazon frogbit or mini water lettuce.

    I'm thinking about getting shrimp

If you're worried about platies going for the shrimp then you could add cover for them. Cholla logs, moss, and leaf litter will be greatly appreciated by the shrimp and provide excellent cover.

    Gourami+ betta Bubble nests

Some male bettas are just not as interested in building bubble nests. It might be a personality thing or he might not have strong breeding instincts. On the flip side some female bettas will build bubble nests. Why? I have no idea. My male betta is older now and he rarely builds bubble nests...

    Ranchu Goldfish

Not for long, they will quickly outgrow that tank. It's not just about having a well filtered tank, that is a small volume of water compared to the proposed bioload you want to add. It would be difficult to maintain good parameters in a tank like that. I reckon you would need to do multiple...

Looking for a fish to help keep platy fry population under control

The betta, depending on the tail type and personality, might not go for the fry and/or might not be fast enough to catch them. To know what fish would be best for your tank members will need to know your parameters. Specifically gH and pH.

Do pet stores carry such bad stock that you should quarantine?

You realize the animal shelters that you're comparing fish stores to quarantine their animals right? So do many farms. It's not a new concept, simply a safety precaution. Fish are fragile and there are diseases that can lie dormant waiting to attack when the fish's immune system is compromised...

Potential emergency? Freshwater tank with high Ammonia

Water does not contain much (if any) beneficial bacteria because the BB prefer to attach themselves to surfaces in the tank. They are not free floating. The bacteria you want is mainly found on filter media, so if you can get some seeded media it would be much better for your cycle.

    Have a very sick betta

If you can't get live or frozen hikari freeze dried daphnia is the next best thing.

    Have a very sick betta

Live or frozen is the best if you can get your hands on some. Some local fish stores might sell some frozen, or you can get it dehydrated too.

    Have a very sick betta

I would recommend daphnia instead of the pea for constipation/swim bladder. It is is much better for bettas because it is easier to digest vs plant matter. Their digestive systems are better suited to high protein foods. The fiber in peas is great for herbivorous and omnivorous fish, but bettas...

    Betta Still Acting Off

Agreed. OP larger WCs of 50% should reduce nitrates by half unless your source water has nitrates in it too. I typically try to keep my own nitrates under 10ppm, however they have been 0-5ppm for a while now because of my consistent WC schedule and plants. Do you remove him to do WCs? How often...

    Betta Still Acting Off

To add onto Slaphppy7's questions, what do you feed him and how often/how much? Low quality foods that have a lot of fillers can cause digestive issues with bettas. If chronic it can develop into swim bladder issues (buoyancy problems). Another thought is if he doesn't have a lot of places to...

    Betta Still Acting Off

Their digestive systems are better suited towards high protein foods. Daphnia is a better "laxative" for betta's vs plant matter because it is easier for them to digest.

    Betta Splendens Coexisting?

I know which is why I advised against it and let OP know about their aggressive and territorial nature. I also added that I wouldn't even attempt it.
  27. V

    Betta Splendens Coexisting?

It really depends on a lot of factors including the betta's personality, the size of the tank and how heavily planted it is. That being said they are a naturally aggressive and territorial species who don't appreciate fish in their space. I personally wouldn't risk it, especially if you do not...

Molly died. Can someone explain the behavior before death? [graphic. Dead fish]

Hard to tell. It sounds like she had clamped fins which is usually caused by stress and/or poor water quality. Once a fish is dead other fish will pick at the body so that's probably what happened to the eyes. Could you provide some more info so members can advise you better? tank size? full...

    Tank is not doing well!

Water changes remove many microorganisms and replenish minerals that are important for fish and especially shrimp. It's not just about keeping nitrates low. I personally believe that one should do weekly WCs of no less than 50%. More when you notice you have sick fish.

    Tank is not doing well!

Have you tried increasing your water change volume and frequency? Clean water can do wonders for fish and help with fin regrowth.

Can I keep two pleco’s in the same tank?

Most plecos are very territorial with other plecos, especially when they are mature. I wouldn't risk it.

Do you still have to cycle if adding all the water from other, established tank?

I didn't see it.. OP shouldn't be opening multiple threads for the same question then.
  33. V

Do you still have to cycle if adding all the water from other, established tank?

Yes, the water doesn't hold any beneficial bacteria. BB lives on filter media and surfaces in the tank, including the substrate.

Can dogs be vegetarian (split from thread "Feeding cichlids and other fish meat")

I must have missed the part of the bible that talks about the scientific revolution that has saved millions of lives due to advances in medicine. But I guess that never happened since it's not in the bible.

Can dogs be vegetarian (split from thread "Feeding cichlids and other fish meat")

Do you not believe in science? Do you understand what an obligate carnivore is? Furthermore, check out this article before telling me that dogs all of a sudden at one point in history decided to eat meat...

Can dogs be vegetarian (split from thread "Feeding cichlids and other fish meat")

I'm saying that there is no way it survived on a vegetarian diet. Anyone can say they fed it whatever they wanted. There is no proof they fed it a vegetarian diet. There is however plenty of science supporting the dietary needs of felines. Smh.
  37. V

Can dogs be vegetarian (split from thread "Feeding cichlids and other fish meat")

You can't disprove science no matter what your beliefs are. A simple google search would tell you that lions are obligate carnivores. All felines are. Obligate meaning they MUST eat meat.
  38. V

Can dogs be vegetarian (split from thread "Feeding cichlids and other fish meat")

That's literally impossible because felines are obligate carnivores meaning they die without meat because they cannot produce taurine. I see no proof here, just a made-up story.
