Could be, but did you recently feed them? Back when I had platys and mollies it would be hard to tell after recent feedings since they ate so much. Perhaps fast them for two or three days and see which still looks plump.

I have one with 4 knobs but I only use 2, in theory you might be able to use one to disperse excess air from the air line on one side so that the air going into the tank is weaker? Or a smaller pump ;)

Well the thing about the hard water is every area can vary in alkalinity from a little to a lot. Many fish at the big stores don't often show signs of sickness or stress induced illness until later. Gasping for air? I'd think it'd be a lack of oxygen in the water. I suggest getting an aquarium air pump and air stone/bubbler wand to help oxygenate the water. Usually gasping indicates that ammonia and nitrites are at toxic levels. A water change is in order, at least 50%, maybe even larger...
