Nipping I'd say. Bettas are notorius for nipping guppies fins. Some tetras aren't averse to taking a chunk out of these flowing tails either. What kind of tetras?

It does sound a bit like hes being bullied. Having ich tends to bring fishes vigour down too. Just need to keep an eye out and hopefully when the ich goes he'll be happier.

African cichlids may be a better bet. I always fancied a tank with shell dwellers. Julidichromis species are relatively small and some of the more beatiful Africans IMO

I think you are probably correct with convicts.

I would think most LFS would be happy to take them off your hands in exchange for store credit. Rams are popular fish.

These look to have been dyed. Quite hard to tell what they are for this reason. They look like they may be severums but their shape is typical of many cichlid types.

You may end up with snails in your tank from adding plants. That's not a problem for me as I like snails, but some people don't. That would be the only reason I can think of for treating them unless they were covered in algae.

I have two t5 lights in my Juwel 260 that are way past their replacement dates. Which combo will work best. I want something that's good for plants and will enhance the fishes colours, but if its a choice, plant growth is more important.

I've eventually taken the plunge and bought a set of dry ferts for dosing using the EI system. Today is day one so it remains to be seen if its a success. £18 for a starter kit including fancy mixing/dosing bottles.

I am using akadama bonsai soil in my shrimp tanks. It does the job in bringing down the PH and is decent for growing plants, but I don't like the look of it and find it very messy as its so light. I'm assuming capping it with sand or gravel won't affect the PH reducing qualities of the akadama...

Sounds like you did everything right, I'm not aware of a disease that only affects barbs. Have you always dosed in these quantities?

I agree with Essjay, they were most likely infected when you bought them.

If you can get that carpet growing this will look pretty special.
