Trying to learn about Pygmy sunfish - struggling to find info!

I definitely would. They arrived quickly and in good condition. I had ordered one pair and she sent two! The males were initially the same color as the females. I could tell them apart by fin size, though. They colored up nicely in a matter of days. Incidentally, our paths crossed on an elassoma...

I’m sure they’ll do fine as you’re doing them a favor in removing the algae. Last March, I had a very unfortunate experience after re-scaping my 75 gallon tank. I think because I changed out the substrate it went through a mini-cycle which caused about half of my anubias nana petite to melt. And...

Yes, it was I who posted about getting them from an eBay seller. I don’t forsee any problems with pygmy corydoras in a 20 gallon. Temps in the mid 70s should be fine for both.

Platy making bubbles at the top of water! HELP!!

Have you made any changes to your tank recently? Have you tested your water? The presence of ammonia or nitrite can cause difficulty breathing and cause fish to gasp at the surface where there is more oxygen. Do you notice a change in appearance or behavior in any of the other fish?

Trying to learn about Pygmy sunfish - struggling to find info!

Funny I should come across this post right after I entered my Elassoma gilberti bowl in the tank of the month contest…I’m new to keeping them- I just got 2 pairs 6 week ago. One pair have their own 3.5 gallon bowl, the other are in a 20 gallon long with about 3 dozen CPD offspring from last...

    Acidic tank

I really only keep soft water fish and use R/O water for all my water changes. I bring the Gh to 4-5 degrees and all of my tanks have a Kh of 1 or below. The ph of the R/O is around 6.5, and it’s pretty much the same in my tanks. The exception is my 75 gallon where I run CO2. It drops a little...

Vote Now! - March 2022 Tank of the Month Contest (16 US gal & smaller)

This is my 15 month old 3.5 gallon planted bowl. The substrate is a layer of organic potting soil capped with pool filter sand. The plants function as the bowl’s filtration. They include: pearl weed, Rotala indica, Rotala H’ra, Ludwigia repens, Hygrophila lancea, Didiplis diandra, root floaters...

    Fish keeping absolutes

There are several hyper links where he goes into more detail about various topics. He does qualify some of the more general statements, for example, pointing out specific requirements for eggs and fry of certain species. I haven’t read through everything yet, but I’m very much intrigued.

    Fish keeping absolutes

Talking about debunking absolutes, I just came upon a website which has information that I find very thought-provoking. Some of the more controversial claims being about water parameters: the relative unimportance of gh, kh and ph vis-a-vis filtration (particularly regarding soft water fish)...

    What would you own?

I would love to keep rainbow belly pipefish (Microphis deocata). I’ve not seen them other than in photos. They’re so beautifully unusual. If I ever get into marine tanks, I’d love to keep seahorses. The top invert on my list would be cuttlefish- I’m mesmerized by them. Something like the...

    Fish keeping absolutes

I’m going to have to say that there are no absolutes in fishkeeping, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t underlying principles for maintaining aquariums and basic requirements about specific species of fish that need to be understood in order to be successful. I can think of examples to...

    Sharing my Wild Bettas

Great looking fish! I’d like to keep mouth brooders in the near future. I currently have Betta uberis- bubble nesters in the coccina complex. They’re fascinating to watch. I just wish that they weren’t so skittish….What’s the typical brood size for your species and do you make an effort to...

I got a new 10 gallon tank! What do I put in it?

I got a new 10 gallon tank! What do I put in it?

What’s more commonly done is to find your tap’s parameters and choose fish that will thrive in it. That being said, it’s much easier to make soft water harder than the reverse, unless you have a reverse osmosis filter or collect rain water to mix with your tap. If your water is medium hard, most...

I got a new 10 gallon tank! What do I put in it?

A 10 gallon tank is certainly not large but it is fine for a dwarf gourami. It’s not large enough for multiples- males can be especially nasty to each other. Honey gourami have a more docile reputation (a 10 is still small for multiples). I’ve kept them with chili rasbora and had no problems.

I got a new 10 gallon tank! What do I put in it?

If dwarf gourami are your favorite, I think you should get one. One dwarf with a dozen Chili Rasboras should do well in a 10 gallon.

Just set up a 10 gallon. Stocking ideas?

If you’re looking for a shoaling fish I recommend Sundadanio axelrodi. I love mine. They really glow in tanin-stained water. They never seem to look as good in photos as they do in person.

Gotcha! I thought it was an online store. I checked Seriously Fish but didn’t see any info (which is surprising) There’s plenty of info online though. The fish are commonly known as pygmy sunfish. There are a few different species, E gilberti and E evergladei are probably the most popular.

Just set up a 10 gallon. Stocking ideas?

I’d probably put two males and 4 females in a 10. The males do claim a territory and chase other males away. If you plant more heavily and add other things (rocks, driftwood, etc)to break up lines of sight, you can probably add another male or two. The sub-dominant males will tend to not...

Using established tank to set up new tank using sponge filter

It’s not that sponges don’t offer enough filtration; rather, fast-growing plants (when there are enough) can render other types of filtration unnecessary. Of course, this depends on the bio-load. One betta, when not over-fed, will not produce an amount of waste that cannot be handled by plants...

Using established tank to set up new tank using sponge filter

Some people claim to have experienced ammonia spikes, but I didn’t when I used it. I usually plant heavily from the start so maybe the plants were able to absorb it.

Just set up a 10 gallon. Stocking ideas?

If you don’t mind feeding live foods I’d recommend elassoma gilberti. You could keep a handful in a 10 gallon. They are unfussy when it comes to water parameters and do not even need a heater. The males are gorgeous in their breeding dress. Here’s one of my males:

Very true- I’m not sure why they are commonly called least killifish as they are not killies. They are very neat little US native fish though.
