Aquariums in movies and tv shows

There used to be a tv series called Coronation Street, set and filmed in Manchester (England). Whenever they needed a fish tank they came to us to set it up on the set and dismantle it after filming. They were not interested in it at all and just requested “a fish tank, to go here”. They didn’t...

    Bit of fun historical media

I love old photos like this. And Innes’s book. Huge nostalgia there. Even in the 1990s there was a shop we supplied that had racks that were 4 tanks high. The top row had no fish, it’s tanks were just for ageing water, which they sold.

Mini Predator or Opportunist predator/Omnivore tank

You may need to add a KH / “alkalinity” buffer while you’re cycling. Sodium bicarbonate is the easiest choice, just so it doesn’t run out of KH. Once it’s cycled the weekly water change should be enough to keep things stable.

    How many threadfin acaras?

They are social but can be very aggressive with each other in small numbers so I would suggest at least 6, which would mean a much bigger tank. 3 is never enough for fish that live in groups.

Leopard Bushfish can grow to more than 6” and eat fish two thirds their size. Tetras and Butterfly Fish will end up as snacks.

Does the science in this article hold up?

TwoTankAmin is right in this case. AquariumScience is one man’s take on keeping fish, obviously ‘self-taught’ and for the most part ignoring proven science and inventing his own conclusions, a lot of which are incorrect all over his site. “This is a website dedicated to freshwater aquariums. It...

Does the science in this article hold up?

Hmmm... I’ve seen literally thousands of fish with visible Camallanus but never white poop with them that I can remember. I’ve also never seen it mentioned as a symptom of Camallanus, or Camallanus as a possible cause of white poop.

    American flagfish question

Fun fact - according to fishbase they hold the Guinness World Record for the fish with the fewest eggs... 20, spawned over several days. Hmmm, not sure of the validity of that. If GaryE comments maybe he can weigh in there... I tried to keep them once many moons ago, in a small community tank...

Fun Facts We Didn't Need To Know

Yes. Mine tried for years to kill me with brussel sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower but I was wise to her game, and never ate a fatal dose. :)

Does the science in this article hold up?

You’re confusing Camallanus with Capillaria. Camallanus protrudes from the anus as tiny red worms. It’s Capillaria that causes stringy white poop. I won’t comment much on treatment because that all depends on where you live. In the UK we treat the water and need to do nothing else. We don’t...

    Electric blue ram

They’re not the easiest fish to sex. For me the small one is too young. The big one is female. It has large eyes which means it’s older than it’s size would suggest, and if it was male it would have a much taller, more vertical forehead.

Ropefish attacked Dragon Goby - euthanize?

Video doesn’t play for me but a broken fin is nothing to worry about. Ropefish need to be kept in a group, like Dojo Loaches. They’re stressed on their own, which is probably why it attacked the new addition.

    worried about my fishes??

It’s nitrite that’s making them gasp for oxygen at the surface, for the reason given by Essjay. The store gave you awful advice. You should NEVER add fish to a tank with any measurable nitrite. You absolutely need to change as much water as is necessary to remove all of that nitrite. And get...

    Choose carefully

There are “tricks of the trade” for certain fish. For Kuhlies, give them half a coconut shell and 99% will be in it at any given time. Then all you do is lift it up quickly and get most of them in the net. :)

    Choose carefully

I’m always surprised by people who think it’s an imposition to choose the individual fish they want. I always do. Fish shops have huge overheads (electricity, wages) before they even start to make a profit, and if pushed, they’ll always catch the ones you want rather than lose a sale.

    Gourami being territorial…help!!

Opalines were all the rage in the 70s. I’m still not sure how they differ from Blues, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one labelled a Cosby. They all look pretty much the same to me.

Yes. Blues, Opalines, Cosbys and Golds are all man-made colour varieties.

    Species-only stocking advice for 55g

Oscars are my favourite soft water cichlid, but your tank could be a great home for any number of small species... Apistogramma, Pelvicachromis (kribs and their relatives), Laetacara, Bolivian Rams... But cichlids would mean a pair, which means breeding if they’re “happy” (I would never keep a...

    Pleco not eating

No, nothing. Obviously this tank needs more than 50% a fortnight. Use the nitrate level to tell you how much you need to change. You need to get it down close to your supply-water level every week. I would be doing at least 50% a week... possibly twice a week. 240 litres is a tiny tank (too...

    Pleco not eating

Scaled or scaleless, it doesn’t really matter. High nitrates are toxic to all fish, and every species has its own tolerance level. Nitrates should literally be kept as low as possible. That’s the main reason we do weekly water changes. Fish that stop eating due to high nitrates often never eat...

    Otocinclus owners - pls help

Synodontis lucipinnis (“dwarf petricola”) needs to be in a group (6+) and in hard water. Angelfish advice- bad tankmates

I remember in the 70s you could find domestic Angels as big as large discus. These days they only get to half that size. You don’t need 75g for just a few. Height (water depth) is more important.

    Is this finrot?

The red streaks in the tail fin are probably either septicaemia (blood poisoning), or congested arteries which are a common precursor to finrot. There also seems to be some greying of the edges to the fins(?) which is a sign of finrot. Otos need to be in a group, at least 10-12. :)
