I've seen a video in the past about how it is done (in the video it was show breeders doing it for perfect edged fins)... I am not too scared to try that one his bottom fins but his top fins are scary as I'd be afraid he'd move and I'd nick his body.   No success taking a decent update picture...

I would be a bit scared to try, especially on his top fin which seems to short.  

I will try and get a close-up of his top fin, he either goes to the other side of the tank or hangs out at the back because my camera ready light reflects there.

Ok... so I will add the antibiotics.  I took the conservative route from what I read, I did read another website saying to add 250mg.  I think I will try 200mg (because dividing up the pill is much easier that way).

Water change complete again, about 90%, no medication or fertizer put in yet, just want to make sure the water clears... it is mostly clear I think the filter will clear the rest shortly.   Wilder:  So... Riley should be showing more improvement than just a good behavior and no more loss of fins?

I was going with 100mg/40 liters with a 20% water change before each dose, that is one dose per day.   Do you think it might be worth changing to Interpet Fin Rot meds instead?   I did google today and see another case and in their pics it was an amazing chance in just under a month... so...

Probably, I did 90% clean earlier and am waiting for my son to finish his painting so I can clear the foggy water.

6 days.  The antibiotics put a slimey coat on everything so I thoroughly cleaned it all just before noon... and it has since turned cloudy so I will change the water again to clear it up.

I was thinking I should probably move my update to my journal (http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/419660-the-life-of-riley/) since his condition seems to have stabilized and no longer seems to be an emergency... as not to take away attention from other fish who are in an emergency state...

No changes, so I will take that as good!  He has flared several times at the corner of death (he hates a particular corner of his tank because light reflects there from outside) I thought I saw his top fin flinch but I also might have imagined it... anyhow, it is no worse anyway!

Wow, plants in the room can actually do something to fish?  I thought it was always stuff in their own tank or that you spray nearby and that sort of thing.

Here is an update in pictures taken a little bit ago.  His eye keeps improving and getting worse over again, his top fins has remained the same and still doesn't expand (is it maybe too short??  I was thinking it is stuck together)... he seems to have a small hole in his tail but I don't know if...

Riley is still being treated, he has long some bottom fin but it otherwise looks remarkably good... there is a hole in the middle of his tail and I've not been scrutinizing that bit so I don't know if that is new or not, either way the edge of it looks good.   His top fin still does not expand...

I'm not sure about that while he has the eye problem.  Even while treating it, it seems to start coming back between meds, I'd be awfully worried leaving him for 2 days in the dark would mean his eye getting a lot worse.

I know!  I had a friend telling me to get one for a couple of years and their grumpy look and defined scales is what turned me off for a long time! 

I am still using the antibiotics, 100mg/40L.   I am starting to feel quite confident is his fins are no longer getting worse, the top fin has stayed exactly the same since losing that little nub.  His bottom fin did lose the black bit overnight, but also the long jagged bit so I'm thinking...

At least his fins are no worse, felt like the top one was going quickly. His eye half cleared with his mythelene blue bath and should again be all the way clear with the next one.

Day 2 and his fins haven't receded any further.  The top fin has been this length for 2 days.   That is not black starting on his top fin, about 15 minutes ago I did a topical swab with mythelene blue on his top fin and along the back portion of his bottom fin and it has stained them a bit.    ...

He has not worsened since that picture.  I hope that in the next week I may be able to update with a picture that will show improvements.   Today I have gently swabbed the black bit on his bottom fin as well as his dorsal fin with echinacea tincture in hopes that that will kill of any bacteria...

I hope he has, too soon to tell.   He has been feeling great, swimming nearly the entire day... I really hope that means something too.

My only update for the day.  He isn't any worse, far as I can tell.  His eye is nearly better, you'd only notice a slight bit of cloudiness if you scrutinized him and caught him in the right light.   He has lost a touch bit of his dorsal fin but only the little nub that was already hanging in...

I haven't added Mythelene Blue to my actual tank.  I intend to do a full water change anyway before adding antibiotics.  From what I have found so far it seems the dosing is 100mg per 40 litres which I of course want to confirm first before using it.

So, as I said yesterday I had no luck getting a prescription of antibiotics from a vet... so I asked a couple friends if they had any left over... and one friend has gotten back to me and said she has some spare "metronidazole".... anybody know if that is alright to use?  I will google as well...

Even if it was legal for sure, I think that would be too long.  I am quite concerned the top fin might keep going if I can't hault it and end up as body rot.  Still swimming normally this morning.  When I get back from the school run I will do another mythelene blue bath while I am doing a clean...

I haven't posted in quite some time.  Poor little Riley hasn't been living the good life lately as we've been battling various ailments despite good water quality.  He has one cloudy eye that has returned 3 times (same eye, same spot), he has what looks like fin rot on the bottom fins but that...

Right... so no progress getting antibiotics... or anyone to even understand.  At the moment I have decided to do mythelene blue baths and he has done his first bath for 15 minutes.  It seems to have had a pretty immediate effect on his eye as it is far more clear than when he went in.

UPDATE:  After my last post I changed the flow the little bit I could and it has done the trick.  The duckweed swirls a lot slower at the top and has begun to multiply.   New question... once I have a much better coverage of duckweed, can I change the flow back to the way it was without them...
