Golden Orfe has lost its buoyancy

The container is still on its way in the post. This is how the fish looks now: https://www.veed.io/view/6a6d410e-8edb-4f23-a7ac-5969be1cdfc2?panel=share I think it is dying of dropsy caused by old age. I think there is a haemorrhaging starting to appear on its base. I will still go ahead with...

Golden Orfe has lost its buoyancy

Ok great. Do you think a plastic storage container like this would be ok for holding salt water?: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/155556819464 I may keep it in the container to observe as it currently keeps hiding underneath dense pond foliage.

Golden Orfe has lost its buoyancy

One of my golden orfe has completely lost its balance. Its underside is bloated up like a balloon. When I touch this area it feels like theres a lot of pressure inside. There are no raised scales so it is not dropsy. What should I do in terms of treatment? Although the fish looks like its dying...

    Creeping Jenny Plant Disinfecting

I guess the creeping jenny is one of the plants that cannot take the bleach. I would be killing it all over again if I do a 1 part bleach to 19 parts water dosage. I guess I will just lower the bleach dose, rinse it well under the tap and hope for the best.

    Creeping Jenny Plant Disinfecting

I think I found the blog post and there he suggests a one part bleach to 20 parts water concentration. This is pretty much what I used and it killed this particular plant. I used to use 25ml of blagdon pond disinfectant and it never killed the plants. I guess I could use 25ml of bleach in the...

    Creeping Jenny Plant Disinfecting

I bought them from a pond plant supplier so would presume they had them in some body of water. They were supplied in the typical perforated black plastic pots that you would use in a body of water. With the Potassium permanganate, this too is something I would avoid as Kusuri in their...

    Creeping Jenny Plant Disinfecting

I’m not concerned about snails on the Creeping Jenny, I’m concerned about things like gill/body flukes that will wipe out my entire stock if it is on the plant. I have no idea of the effectiveness of this reverse respiration method you talk about so would rather stick to what I know which is...

    Creeping Jenny Plant Disinfecting

I recently bought some creeping jenny plant for my Koi pond, and like always, I disinfect the plants before putting them into the pond. Usually I would dip the plant in 10 litres of water containing 25ml of Blagdon Pond Disinfectant which I presume was a kind of bleach. Unfortunately recently...

I have read this but its not clear which diagnosis applies to this situation.

    Discus is sick

This looks like a really bad bacterial infection. I would recommend getting an anti-bacterial treatment in there ASAP. Waterlife Myxazin is very good for treating body and fin rot.

Discus is dark and has white faeces

Since 8 days ago, my discus abruptly stopped eating, became dark, has a cobweb like strand coming away from its fin and is pooing both white globular shaped and stringy poo. I was told this was likely hexamita so began treating the tank with Metroplex and Praziquantel, having dosed the tank...

    Plant Advice

I am looking to add some potted aquarium plants to my bare-bottom discus tank. I do not wish to use any fertilisers or liquid/injected CO2. For lighting I use the Aquasky 990mm. What plant would grow under these conditions? To give an idea, Valis does not grow under these conditions in my...

    Discus Aquarium Disaster

An expert in Discus has confirmed that the 5 have Discus plague. He's recommend Chloramine-T treatment. I will be removing the Myxazin and replacing it with Chloramine-T. From the sound of his voice I don't think he holds much hope that any of the 5 will survive this.

    Discus Aquarium Disaster

Exactly 1 week ago I bought 2 juvenile discus from my LFS to add to a 300 litre aquarium that already contains 5 medium/large discus from another supplier. Gradually over the course of the last week each of the 5 medium/large discus have developed these symptoms: - Tail fin rot - Opaqueness -...

    Magnetic Strip

Are there any aquarium magnet strips on the market that can be safely used in the aquarium? One strip would need to be inside and the other outside. Between the 2 would be 30mm glass and a sheet of cotton that the two magnets need to be strong enough to hold in place. I managed to find this...

    im selling duckweed LOL

Firstly, sell anything on eBay for 3 months to build up a good reputation at which point you can list duckweed with a promoted listing feature which boosts the listing to the top. Without the promoted listing tool you just need to reduce your price and ensure you do not accumulate defects on the...

    Fish loss during acclimation

If you have been struggling to keep the nitrate level down this would suggest that you are doing infrequent water changes on the tank. Accompanying infrequent water changes is the issue of old tank syndrome whereby the KH and GH become depleted resulting in huge disparities between the tank...

    Mystery Bolivian ram illness

The red is a natural colour in Bolivian rams. The black horizontal mark across the centre of the body is more concerning as it suggests stress. This should clear up if you can ensure you are not adding excess co2. I have always found drop-checkers unreliable. You are better off using one for a...

    Keeping water temperature down

Do a gradual water change if you notice that the fish are gasping and the gill rate is very quick. Certain fish, such as Bolivian Rams for instance, can react badly to the kind of temperature you have mentioned. Increase the surface agitation of the water to prevent any of the above symptoms.

    Moving Discus Eggs

For some reason my paired Discus parents have decided that once their eggs hatch that the fry should now all be eaten. They started doing this eating on the 4th round of parenting. On the 1st to 3rd round the fry would attach to their bodies to eat the slime coat but subsequently get lost in the...

    Rearing Discus Fry Artificially

Ok I will give it a go. It's 2 more days until they hatch. So just to confirm, you are saying the fry can eat particles from the yolk cloud without needing to eat the parents' slime coat beforehand?

Dumbest thing anyone’s said to you regarding fish…Go!

The barrel contains ammonia and is completely stagnant. It just has the one lily in there. I wouldn't personally put any living thing in there.

    Rearing Discus Fry Artificially

It is probably not worth me pursuing this then as the fry do not attach properly to their parents. I was hoping that when they became free-swimming that I could scoop them up and offer them the egg yolk without them attaching to the parents. The parents are in a community aquarium but I put a...

Dumbest thing anyone’s said to you regarding fish…Go!

Someone I know wanted to place a goldfish in a old whiskey barrel I have full of water and floating lilies. He believed the fish would survive in stagnant, non-filtered water.

    Rearing Discus Fry Artificially

My Discus has now laid 3 batches of eggs on various surfaces in the aquarium. Each of the 3 times a minority of the fry become free swimming and they attach to the parents. Due to only a small amount attaching, the parents lose interest and show behaviour that suggests they want to spawn afresh...

    Aquarium magnets

I have another thread where I obtained white netting to create a barrier between my community fish and a pair of discus and their fry. Aquarium magnets

Are there any magnets on the market that are safe to use in the aquarium? Im looking for something similar to the Zoo Med Mag clip but perhaps just a magnet without the plastic or screw on clip. I would need approximately 15-20 pieces. Any advice is appreciated.

    Aquarium Netting

Thanks for all of the help. I ended up obtaining some white netting that would traditional keep bugs and butterflies away from leaves in the UK. I have some Discus fry in my tank which 2 parent Discus are guarding so I have needed to create a white barrier to separate them from the other...
