Do some fish ( gouramis ) get belligerent, as they age???

Nowadays Kermit would file a complaint with HR.

    Wingless Fruit Flies

Now that I think of it, another possibility is that some wild fruit flies got into the culture and bred with the flightless ones, giving the offspring flight.

    Black worm question

Try grindal worms. They're super easy and don't need much space.

    Wingless Fruit Flies

And I just got to learn the fun science fact that after enough generations of breeding, flightless fruit flies regain the ability to fly.

    Ammonia in the tap water

It took less than 12 hours after I added hornwort. Like I said in the OP I was expecting fish by FedEx the next day. I added a few clumps of hornwort. Which I was going to do anyways. Between that and the beneficial bacteria, the tank was safe by the time the new fish arrived.

    AI v.s. Human

I do something like this. I use AI as a creative writing outlet. I tell AI what to write and enter ideas and then revisions. It's probably terrible and I'll never share it with anyone. But it entertains me.

    Ammonia in the tap water

Ideally it would be zero. But there isn't a federal standard here.

    The quest begins.

I just got them in today. One didn't survive the trip. It got caught in a fold of the bag and was above the water line. I don't think that's really anyone's fault. But I ordered 10 and they sent me 11 so that evened out. They're in the quarantine tank now. I'll see how the next few days go.

    Ammonia in the tap water

I'm hoping this is temporary. I just did a water change for one tank on Sunday and my betta tank yesterday. None of the fish are showing any ill effects. I'll test the water and keep an eye out.

    Ammonia in the tap water

I already do that part. I'm wondering if they increased the chloramine levels if that would show up as ammonia on the test.

    Ammonia in the tap water

I just got off the phone with the phone company. I don't think the rep was really prepared for the conversation about water chemistry. To be fair, most of her job is people with questions about their bills. She was nice and able to report that there are no reports that the water isn't safe...

    Ammonia in the tap water

I'm preparing to receive a shipment of fish by FedEx today. In preparation yesterday, I did a big water change on my quarantine tank. It's been cycled and I've been adding maintenance doses of ammonia. I changed 60% out, twice. Imagine my surprise when I tested it after and got an ammonia...

    The quest begins.

I've been checking them for a while and never saw them listed. I'm sure I'll do business with them again though.

I would have loved to have ordered from Dan's again. But they didn't have what I wanted.

Will do. If this goes well, I'd love to give them some positive word of mouth.

    The quest begins.

I decided not to be patient anymore. After a few weeks of constantly calling every fish store in the area and coming up short, I placed an order online. Dan's doesn't carry them and The Wet Spot doesn't have them in stock. I almost went with Flip Aquatics but they were out of stock before I...

    Best shrimp for betta?

Grindals are good food for your pygmy corys too. Funny story. I walked in on my betta face down in the moss carpet I made for his tank. Startled me until I realized that he was digging around for some of the grindal worms I fed him earlier and he had missed.

Red root floaters losing their color

Check your nitrate levels. When nitrates are low, they're red. When nitrates are high, they're green.

    Best shrimp for betta?

I've seen people say that the size and hard exoskeleton of mealworms isn't good for most fish. Grindal worms and blackworms are good though.

    Best shrimp for betta?

Mine will eat baby brine shrimp. But not as enthusiastically as he does mosquito larvae or frozen bloodworms. His favorite is wingless fruit flies. He is outright vicious with how he charges at them. He practically breaches like those great whites on Shark Week going at a seal. They're easy...

Such thing as too much activated carbon?

I don't use it myself because I like having tannins in my aquarium. But can't you rinse Purigen off and use it again?
  23. sharkweek178

Such thing as too much activated carbon?

Carbon doesn't do anything that regular water changes don't do. Much less actually. When I get a new filter, I always throw the carbon insert in the garbage. You can just replace it with another layer of mechanical or biological filtration (which don't need to be replaced every few months)...

    Smoke?

I'll have my phone on standby for next week's water change.

    Smoke?

I always unplug the heater 15 minutes before draining the water.
  26. sharkweek178

    Smoke?

I saw something bizarre when I was doing a water change on my 29 gallon yesterday and I cannot figure out an explanation. After I drained about half the water in the tank and some Manzanita driftwood was sticking out of the water, I saw what appeared to be a wisp of smoke coming off of it. You...

    Betta Fish poop?

I wouldn't worry too much about fish poop or other detritus. It's food for the live plants. It's natural and doesn't harm the fish. It's just a little unsightly. As your tank matures, it will get better at breaking it down. Until then, you can use a turkey baster to spot clean any detritus...

What is it about a Comet Goldfish, that says “eat me” ???

Thiaminase. It's an enzyme that destroys vitamin B1 and causes nutritional imbalances.

Aquariums in movies and tv shows

I've been rewatching an old favorite, Homicide: Life On The Streets, since it came to streaming. One episode, the murder victim had a fish in a bag in his possession when he was killed. The evidence guy doesn't want to take it into evidence. He tells Detective Munch to flush it. Munch...

    Help me choose rasboras

I'm actually thinking of getting a mix of reds and purples now. Maybe a couple blacks if I can find them.

    Help me choose rasboras

Can you clarify "nicer"? Do you mean behavior or appearance?
  33. sharkweek178

    Help me choose rasboras

I'm pretty certain that I know the answer to this. If I mix some purple harlequin rasbora with some reds and maybe some blacks, would they school together? I'm pretty sure the answer is yes since they're still the same species.

    Help me choose rasboras

Beautiful fish and one that I would like to have some day. But their coloration is a little too close to the honey. I'd like a little more of a contrast.

    Help me choose rasboras

Standard 29 gallon 30 x 12 x 18 136 ppm, 8 GH. 7.2 pH. I would have loved to get blue axelrodi rasbora but my pH is too high for them to do very well in it.

    Help me choose rasboras

I have a 29 gallon with a honey gourami and pygmy corydoras. I had neon tetras but they have died off due to NTD. I want to replace them with a rasbora species. I want something that visually contrasts with the honey gourami. I also need them to be true rasboras. Galaxy rasbora and emerald...

    Pest snail?

This can be a tool. A lot of the effects of overfeeding aren't immediately visible. So if you have ramshorns and see a lot of them, then you know that you're overfeeding and need to cut back. I like to think of them as a bellwether in that way.

    Live food collecting! Any tips?

My method for collecting mosquito larvae is a bit tedious but it works. My bins of water I collect mosquito larvae from get filthy. A ton of algae and detritus like leaves, sticks, dead bugs and an occasional slug. I swish a large brine shrimp net in the water and rinse it in a bucket of...

stocking ideas for a 10-15 gallon betta tank?

From what I remember, it's quite difficult to breed amanos. They hatch in salt water but then you have to move the babies to fresh water.
