Question on hatching brine shrimp eggs

I have been hatching BBS for 15 days straight so while I'm not experienced as others I'll answer what I can. 1. PH does not seem to matter. I've hatched via RO water and tap both of which have very different PH readings. 2. Light has zero effect on how the BBS hatch. Temperature however, is...

    About vacuuming the gravel?

Depends on the type of setup. I gravel vac once a week in my discus tank but in my densely planted tanks, I never gravel vac substrate and just keep up with WC

Oh my... We'll have to disagree. These spawning discus are from a juwel 450 planted tank with cory cats, a large school of tetras, amano shrimp, and a lot of plants... In my living room Also bright juwel led spectrum lights, 2 inches of substrate, (to hold the plants in place) co2 running at...

They're pretty ferocious amongst themselves in my experience. They wont squabble but more so dominate your black skirts if you combine them.

How to decrease aggression in discus tank

I think your problem is due to three separate factors that has culminated in your discus death. The first is that you don't have enough discus. You need six as a minimum to spread the aggression around. Discus aggression like most cichlids is hierarchy and spawning related and at groups of less...

Hey guys I really appreciate the interest. I've been in the hobby for some time but this is the first time I've actually put effort into raising fry of any species beyond adding some decap brine for apisto and tetra fry I've managed to save. But this is a different kettle of fish entirely...

Thank Viking. I've got them eating live baby brine shrimp now and they'll leave the mothers side completely to chase them down. Another important change is that today their showing the distinctive red ring around their eyes which gives some indication as to their health.

Yup it's very exciting to see them grow. Just looking at the contrast in the pics I took on day 1 as opposed to a week later show they're growing faster than I expected. The mucus from their parents must be extremely nutritious.

    Cycle starters?

I'm going to say something some might find controversial... But from my understanding those expensive bottles of bacteria which are reported to contain "Beneficial bacteria" are money sinks. The bacteria need a source of food and oxygen to survive and to date nobody has explained how these are...

    London nitrates

    1. 1. After you set up the RO unit and do the first flush of the system as instructed. The PH should be in the same region as the tap water. It will remove impurities but the PH is basically the same. 2. Your tank is roughly 50G (if my off the cuff math serves me correctly) you will need to...

    Python water changer

Yes, that's the downside of a python. Essentially you have to waste an equal amount of water as you remove from the tank as the tap it's connected to has to be running to create the pull. It's why I moved away from using a python to a pond pump.

Hey @madmark285 Happy weekend and all of that good stuff :) We're actually on the same page it's just that our approach is different. I plan to use a canister to pre filter except instead of repurposing a canister in the way you mentioned, I plan to purchase an oase bio master that has a...

    Python water changer

My recommendation is a pond pump similar to this It removes 225L in 8 minutes and returns the water in the same amount of time. Cutting a 50% water change on my 450L into an under 20 minute job where as before it's be a very long and accidentally spillage mission.

    Do you ever feel uninspired?

My main aquarium is in the living room. My other half doesn't want the open system or like the sound of running water. Small compromises really considering that I got a 120 gal aquarium out of the negotiations.

    Do you ever feel uninspired?

Wise words indeed. One of my favourite tanks was a dirt tank that I kept for three years. The discus themselves are quite elegant and their relationships, even for chiclids, is quite unique. Also spawning... Here's a recent spawn, getting to that point was a journey in and of itself. I guess...

    Do you ever feel uninspired?

Thanks guys I really appreciate the feedback. It's clear that while I'm looking at this as a rubix cube, others see it in a better light than I do. I have tried swords before and while they can tolerated 28C they're pretty much stunted at that temp. Especially in comparison to other tanks where...

    Do you ever feel uninspired?

Thanks for your kind words. The tetras are cardinal. I have about 22-25. Discus can't catch them to eat them. They did try for like a day or two but cardinals are simply to fast and so they gave up trying a very long time ago and show zero interest in them. Thank you. The plant is Crypt...

What are these white growths on the Tetra's fin?

That's the result of fighting which they do an awful amount. I wouldn't add any treatment to the tank but I would get some more tetra to even amount the number. My diamond tetras were absolutely viscous to each other during spawning and the torn fins were exactly the same as pictured above.

    Do you ever feel uninspired?

I use AFDB but they're very oily hence the oil slick. I can't sing the praises of the fluval FX6 but the tubing is really restrictive in terms of options. I purchased this earlier today I'm still looking at filter options but the pre filter on the OASE Bio master 850 looks mighty lol and it...

Mine shipped with a tap to adjust the pressure. I get it to 55psi by simply opening up the tap. Considering how thin the actual line in I always thought the pressure build up was natural. I'm using this tap BTW

I have had my discus since they were 3 months old. I have 2 pairs and another female who had her first spawn 2 days ago. I agree it takes work but I've been in a maintenance rhythm for some time now. I've seen some new tanks from people online however in practice they seem... Well...

    Holy Moley....

I use pond pump with 16/22mm fitting. Tubing from the tank to the sink and then reverse from a barrel to the tank. I used to use a 25L bucket and put the pump in there while the tap was running to give a constant supply to refill. Pumps are a necessity once the tank gets to a certain size imo

    Do you ever feel uninspired?

I truly love this hobby of ours. But recently due to the limitations of my tank (which ironically is one of the larger mass produced tanks) I'm beginning to feel a little uninspired. After starting this hobby I moved into planted tanks. My first plant was a hygrophila and since then I've been...

It's not good for drinking. Because essentially it is mineral free so it has to be re-mineralized. You no longer need dechlorinator but you will need to add minerals before adding it to your tank.

    75% water changes

I'd also add that hormones are something that fish release and in certain species like discus fish and accumilation of hormones can actively stunt and misshape the species. I change over 100% a week via two large water changes.

As a London native who is a veteran of the battle against our awful out of the tap parameters. I can say with some degree of confidence, purigen isn't going to address your issue. I was here in 2009. Started out by asking google why my goldfish were dying and found this forum. A long standing member whose name I believe was some variation of "old man" introduced me to the fishless cycle and I've been in the hobby ever since. Over time I've had a number of aquarium setups...

    Are you Vacuuming your tank?

I have larger fish that will swim into my hand and allow me to pet them. Tetras on the other hand school by nature but will actively look for any bits of food when I vacuum, swimming just out of range of the syphon and then zooming in to see what they can find when I move to the next section.
