Bulldog Pleco In And 8 Gallon

An interesting proposition. I would think you'd need to be aiming for around 20x water turnover, for water purity, water flow, and oxygenation. You would also need the water cooler than usual, 18-20C or thereabouts.   Another good trick for these would be having some spare rocks growing algae...

    Snail Eggs

I assume that since you have no idea what sort of snail you have, that you didn't buy it (otherwise you'd know), so it's a fair assumption that they are pest snails.   If that's right, then take the eggs out, because pest snails can multiply exceptionally quickly.

    Easiest Tropical Fish To Maintain?

It depends upon the size of the aquarium you have got / are getting.   I always found platies are pretty hardy, as are cherry barbs, cardinal tetra, pentazona barbs.

    Im Back!

I really ought to keep more of an eye open in here. Welcome back, and good to see you're getting back into the hobby. Your old threads should still be there in the archives, the forum software hasn't really changed much in the last 2 years, so click into your profile, to find your old content.

    Water Changes?

Interpet Tap Safe is fine, it will do the job. When you come to replace it, the majority of us use "Prime". This is not often found in LFS, which is a shame, because it is quite concentrated, meaning that the bottle lasts a helluva long time (and that's probably why you don't find it often)...

    Water Changes?

Back in the good old days, water companies used chlorine to sterilise the water, to make it safe for human consumption. This would normally take 48 hours or so to "gas off". Nowadays, some companies use chloramine which does not gas off. For the cost of it, a water conditioner, as others have...

    Something In My Water?

Everything you say points to ammonia and/or nitrite poisoning. You need to get the water tested ASAP.   How long has the tank been set up, and how did you cycle its filter?

New To Tff And Tropical Fish!

Ooooh, you'll get lots of advice on here.   1st. Read this 2nd. Read it again ;)   To keep your water from poisoning your fish, you need bacteria in the filter. That link is the best way to cultivate those bacteria without harming fish.   3rd. Get as big a tank as you can afford and have space...

Green Tiger Barbs - What Can They Live With?

Nitrate is 0? I would have expected something around 50, in a cycled tank, tbh.   Can you give a history of the tank, please. I have deleted your other post, whilst this issue gets sorted, then you can continue asking about compatibility in this thread.

Green Tiger Barbs - What Can They Live With?

More tiger barbs? :)   First things first, you have to get your water sorted first. I reckon you have probably got nitrate and nitrite the wrong way round, but 5.0ppm nitrite is very very bad. You need to get salt into the water PDQ to negate the affects of the nitrite. 75mg of salt per litre of...

    Stocking A Juwel Trigon 190

Not all cichlids are psychopaths, and I wouldn't foresee many problems with an apisto - the German Blue Ram can be a bit fussy when it comes to water quality though.   Dwarf (or indeed any of the smaller) gourami species would go beautifully in the tank too. Swordtails are again a good choice...

    Stocking A Juwel Trigon 190

If you want the blue Siamese Fighter, then find a small corner for a 25l tank, and have him in it on his own. They are naturally solitary fish, and I feel a 190l is just too big, there is too much other activity for him to be truly comfortable.   Alternatives for the 190l - nothing's got the...

Question Re The New Sponsor Advertising

TTA, if a sponsor's post stayed there forever, then as the sponsor added more and more posts, the New Content area would be taken over by the sponsor's posts, and there would be no room for the new content. That rather defeats the object of a New Content area.

    Glo-Fish Tetras Aggressive?

Gotta be honest, I'd hate to buy them, period. But then that's just my take on things, there are so many naturally beautiful fish, even those that have been selectively bred that way, what's the point of adding a fluorescent jellyfish gene into a fish?   Obviously, the point is that the false...

    Gender Of Dalmation Lyretail Molly

I've had issues with gender identification with lyretail mollies in the past, I think I've bought 3 females that I thought were males.   I think the photo you have posted is female.

    Glo-Fish Tetras Aggressive?

The Glofish(R) tetras are genetically modified black skirt tetras. As Dreamer says, they are notoriously nippy fish, and I have read reports that they are nippy even in a large group. I have never kept black skirt tetras, so cannot comment from experience.

Already Have A Question About Fishless Cycle

Logic would suggest that if 6.6ml gave you a dose of 1ppm, then you would need 19.8ml to give you 3ppm (or for practicality's sake, 20ml)

    Chilli Rasbora (Brigittae) Hiding

I'm in agreement with Mr Tree, these fish do better when they have plenty of cover. If they know they have somewhere to hide, they are happier, and therefore swim out more. In a bare tank, with no cover, they will just hide.   It may just be that this specific fish is a particularly nervous one...

    Prenant Platy:suspected Father?.. Guppy

Guppies cannot crossbreed with platies.   The father will be one of the male platies in the tank at the fish shop. Female livebearers are able to store sperm packets and use them for fry drop for about 6 months after their last contact with a male.     1. It depends upon how much cover the fry...

    Dead Molly

What kit are you using to test the water?   Those readings are very odd. I wouldn't expect a nitrate reading of 0ppm ever, really, unless your tank is absolutely stuffed full of plants (to the extent that the fish can hardly move), although this could be a mis-test, if you are using the API kit...

    Ammonia Calculator

Yes, that calculator is VERY old, I believe it's been on the site for around 7 or 8 years, and at that time, the recommended dosage was 5ppm. As with anything, our understanding of a process moves on, and recommendations alter in line with that updated understanding.

My New Tank Is Cloudy With No Fish In It .

Yes, it's very common, it's called a bacterial bloom, and they normally disappear on their own within a few days.   From what you have said, I need to warn you that you are currently doing nothing to prepare your filter for fish, in spite of what you may have been told eslewhere (especially by...
