Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Tested water today and since yesterday the results are finally there! Ammonia: 0ppm Nitrite: 0ppm Nitrate: 10-20ppm So happy :) I’ll skip water change today and will test again tomorrow. Fingers crossed it stays that way. Not sure if it’s coincidence but I’ve added Seachem Stability during...

Is it healthy to skip a day of feeding...

Thanks for the support @Deanasue :) I am fairly new to fish keeping as you can see from my other thread I made mistake with over feeding and stocking too quickly hence why I’m starting my cycle again. I’m making sure I’m doing everything right now as welfare of fish is very important for me...

Is it healthy to skip a day of feeding...

Nitrites is falling, it’s staying at about 0.25ppm. Nitrates is somewhere between 20-40ppm. Although when I tested my tap water the nitrate is about 10ppm.

Is it healthy to skip a day of feeding...

Sorry to resurrect old thread but I have relevant question. I’m in the middle of cycling my tank again and I’m struggling with nitrite and nitrate levels. I’m thinking if feeding my fish every other day during cycling. I have 145l or about 38 US gallon tank with neon tetras, cardinals, Odessa...

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Thanks @essjay. Just did a 50% water change. Before change: Ammonia : 0ppm Nitrite : 0.25ppm Nitrate : Between 20-40ppm. Definitely no dark enough to be 40 but slightly darker than 20ppm After change: Ammonia : 0ppm Nitrite : 0ppm Nitrate : 20ppm Tested tap water for Nitrate and it’s just...

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Still doing daily water changes and starting to see some results. Ammonia seems to be zero now and nitrite hovers about 0.25ppm. However nitrate is creeping up to 40ppm. Thinking of reducing feeding to only every other day. What are your thoughts in this?

    My new tank setup

I am also going through a similiar experience to cycle my tank again. I have fish and live plants in the tank. The brown spots on the leaf could be algae, what are your Nitrate readings? For the plants I've got some root tabs down when I first planted them and they seem to be doing well. I...

Where am I in the fish in cycle?

Yes. sorry was meaning to type Nitrite. API Kit is good but some colours on the chart are very close. i.e. for Ammonia 0 and 0.25ppm, Nitrate 40 and 50ppm and Nitrite 0.50 and 1ppm. Just wondering if there are any other options out there.

Where am I in the fish in cycle?

Curious question, what test kit did you use? Just wondering how you got 0.4ppm for Nitrates

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Sounds like my current situation. As nitrite is quite low (0.25ppm) perhaps they are in the process of converting to nitrate ?

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Did a smaller 40% water change today and that brought nitrite down from 0.25 to 0ppm. Nitrate didn’t budge much remains about 10ppm. Interesting to see readings tomorrow. I’m also leaning towards perhaps 3 days water change if nitrite remains about 0.25ppm max.
  12. jonnyc88

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Yes I will keep doing water changes until the cycle completes. Perhaps a bit less, 20-30% as I’m doing daily changes. I’ve been researching similar cases where there are zero ammonia and very low nitrites today and came across that thread. There were also other threads which suggests 3 days...

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Tested today and ammonia is zero however nitrite climbed slightly to 0.25ppm. I've been doing 50%-60% water changes daily. I've been doing some reading and it does say it's important to change water during a cycle to prevent toxic build-up of ammonia and nitrites. However it seems the...

Excellent explanation. Thanks! Really getting good exercise with all these water changes ;)

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Curious question , since now ammonia is zero and nitrite has increased a tiny bit, isn’t that a sign that the cycle is starting? Or is the best practice for a tank with live plants and fish present to change water daily if ammonia and nitrite are above zero?

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Measured today at lunchtime at looks like whilst ammonia is still 0 Nitrite climbed a bit to 0.25ppm. Looks like more water changes required. Bit strange it’s just Nitrite that increased. Edit: I have some API Tress Zyme+ and thinking of adding it after water change. It’s recommended weekly...

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Thanks for the tips. Suppose it will be tricky during winter time when daylight is shorter. Shame no other water test kits are comparable.

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Did a 50% water change and the results are much better this time around :) I would say 0% ammonia and very close to 0% nitrite as well but it’s hard to tell sometimes. Fingers crossed the parameters will stabilise now.

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Looks like nitrite is slowly climbing whilst nitrate dropped: pH : 6.8 Ammonia : 0.5ppm Nitrite : 1 ppm Nitrate : 5 ppm Really weird but suppose need to do daily water changes until ammonia and nitrites are zero.

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Did water test today and noticed the Nitrite increased a little to 0.75ppm. Will do a 30% water change later. Current water parameter (mostly same as yesterday except for Nitrite) pH : 6.8 Nitrite : 0.75ppm Nitrate : 20ppm Ammonia : 0.35ppm (a little more than 0.25 but not quite 0.5ppm on the...

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Yes, to be fair there is a table of toxicity shown later which is pretty much what I’d expect. I’m also intrigued by his stocking advice. I don’t think I’ll ever go for the overstocking recommendation but according to him my stocking levels are currently ok.

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Just had a read, very interesting indeed. However, author also seem to claim that ammonia, nitrite and nitrate is not a major concern... only chlorine is.

Thanks @Byron . I’ve got a new filter in yesterday so perhaps some API Quick Start would help kick start the cycle.

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Tested today and looks like nitrite is slowly climbing. Nitrite: 0.25ppm Ammonia : 0.50ppm I will do a 50% water change however wondering if I should also add some API Quick Start this time?

Cheers bud. I’ll test water everyday and will change if ammonia or nitrite levels are above expected parameters.

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Did another 70% water change today and also swapped out the filter for a Fluval 307. Wow, the flow is very good on this. Fed fish as they are bit stressed with all the activity and did a water test. Parameters look ok: pH : 6.8 Nitrite : 0ppm Nitrates : 20ppm Ammonia : 0.25ppm or just under...

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Well my cancellation was rejected so would be expecting the Fluval 307 tomorrow I think. Just as good as I don't have to look forward to cleaning the filthy pipes in my current filter :P

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

I did a 70 + 30% water change using Prime and cleaned the filter this evening. Boy, was the filter dirty. It smelled really bad, hundreds of copepods swimming on top media basket and also lots of decaying material. To be fair to Aqua One the filter design made it relatively eady to service...

Changing filter on a new tank

I’ve requested cancellation hopefully that goes through as it’s not shown as dispatched yet. My current filter does have mechanical (sponges) and biological (bio noodles and sintered glass) so hopefully that’s enough. I’ll probably give the sponges a good rinse in tank water.

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Thanks. My media is currently setup as per screenshot with the glass and ceramic bio filters, plus sponges and a wool top filter. A mate has Fluval and he said a better filter would make a difference but I’ll go with the experts here :)

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Since there are 3 experienced members here advising against a new filter I’ve requested a cancellation with Amazon. I thought a better, higher flow filter would be beneficial.
  37. jonnyc88

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

I know it’s frivolous but I’ve always wanted the Fluval so I thought this would be a good chance to swap filters as I’m technically starting a new cycle. Regarding stocking I do realise that it’s pushing the limits but the tank looked a bit empty with just 15 Neon Tetras and 8 Peppered...

Help me diagnose my ammonia spike

Yes, typical newbie mistake of over feeding and stocking too quickly. I can’t help it as I really love the fishes :) Due to the lockdown I don’t think I will be able to sort the media out from my LFS. There’s only one close by and to be honest I don’t really like the shop, some of the tanks are...
