New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

Every day is a school day :) Judging from the colouration I think it’s roughly 1:1 ratio here as well, perhaps males outnumbering by one or two. I noticed some chasing but looks playful. Barbs seen to catch all the food before the tetras lol. Will try to vary the feed.

@Byron : Not sure if you’ve seen my earlier message but if you are still having “Low Flow” warnings with your Fluval heater try mounting it at 45degree angle.

Cheers bud :) We are fairly new to this but have done lots of research and had wonderful help from members here. I didn’t request for any specific male/female ratio, just as long as they are mixed which is normally how they are selected anyway. I could be wrong but I think it’s the live...

I got my fish from Tropco (www.tropco.co.uk). Pretty decent company. They use APC which is really good for live fish but they only deliver Wed-Fridays. If you are planning to order I'd recommend small batches though. If you have any questions, fire away! Hard to get picture of all the fish in...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

The Odessa Barbs, Cardinal Tetras and Panda Corydoras arrived today and happy to report they are all doing well thus far. The Barbs and Pandas are definitely an excellent addition to the community tank. Barbs seems to be very active in all areas of the tank and sometimes very playful. The...

I think we have a dried almond leaf in the tank. Not enough to stain though, really just as a hiding place :) Not really big fan of stained water unfortunately, but I can see the appeal. I was looking at red bellied piranhas the other day and was thinking that would be ideal for me second tank...

KISS approach is always good :) Initially I was thinking about the dual channel V2 but upon research I don’t think it will work with my current light anyway. I’m happy I get to control the brightness now, fish seems happier too. The 20W Aqua One led light I have is insanely bright on 100%. One...

Thanks for the feedback @seangee . Definitely put my mind at ease :) Not too sure what difference on Pro version yet but so far really impressed by the functionality. I might play around with the intensity and lower it a little in the future if the plants are doing ok.

The NICREW dimmer arrived and seem to work with my current light. Although at 100% brightness setting it looks brighter than normal so I’ve set a 30 min cycle from 0 > 30 (9AM) > 80 (12PM) > 30 (6PM) > 0 (9.30PM) brightness levels. Will monitor over few days hopefully everything is ok. Always...

    Taking the plant plunge!

Just root tabs every few months and weekly dose of API Leaf Zone here. Plants are looking healthy so far! Regarding the cloudiness I had it as well. I believe it's down to mostly the substrate. I've rinsed mine but perhaps not as thoroughly as I'd liked but it's not easy rinsing 40kg of...

I’ve bought the “Pro” version as well. Fingers crossed it works. Using smart plug at the moment so switching on and off can be quite abrupt.

The room is fairly lit when the lights go off (it goes off 9.30p.m). The lights comes on at about 10.30a.m. Due to lockdown and kids not at school I've left the schedule as it is for now due to the kids sleeping and getting up late (don't ask... :p) My living room where the tank is does not get...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

I did have a look at that kit but I'm wondering if anyone here has experience using it? Lumens wise I'm not sure it's as bright as my current one but I suppose that doesn't matter? Also noticed this light doesn't come with a clip, does it just sit on top of the tank? One good thing about my...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

Thanks! I actually had a look at similiar and I have emailed the manufacturer to see if they are compatible as I don't think all LED light would support dimming. Wiring wise I can plumb this in as the lights have the right connectors. The light came as a kit with the tank (Aqua One Oak Style 145L)

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

I’ve got a LED light which I’ve hooked up to a smart plug so it switches in and off automatically. I noticed that the neon tetras seems very startled when the lights go off at night. They seem to dart around in panic but seem to settle down after a while. Will this harm the fish long term? I...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

Managed to swap Hikari with NLS and Fish Science Work Pallets so I'm well chuffed :) Fluval Bug Bites came today and both the neons and Corydoras seem to love it! Keep getting red on my Fluval E series heater. I've set it to 25C and it's not reading 26, ambient temp is around 27C. Hopefully it...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

I don't think it's possible for refund now as it's booked for delivery but I will try to see what I can do. Looks like they also sell New Life Spectrum pallets and Fish Science Worm Pallets so will see if I can try to swap for those. My current stock (x15 neon tetras and x8 peppered corydoras)...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

Thanks for the tip on Corydoras, certainly wouldn't want to get tossed off ;) I've ordered Fluval Bug Bites and will add them to the feed on certain days. The Hikari Micro Pallets are for the Barbs that I'm getting next week, it comes recommended from the shop. Perhaps I will limit the feed to...

Thanks for the reply. I was over zealous and bought loads of the below. I’ll make note of your recommendation for my next purchase as we seem to have similar fish and setup :) -Fish Science Corydora tablets -TetraMin Tropical Flakes -Hikari Micro pallets edit: had look at Omega One veggie...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

Sounds like some prep is needed, don’t think the missus would appreciate me using her NutriBullet for that lol. Daughter has some frozen food for her shrimps perhaps we will try that out once tank more established. Will it be ok if I primarily feed with flakes and pallets? From the...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

The pepper Corys are hard to spot with the lights in and even harder without lol. I dropped a pallet around 30 minutes before lights out. Corys left it alone initially however this morning the mound is gone :) I did consider getting frozen bloodworm to feed once weekly further down the line...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

Thanks @Byron. I personally don't think it's often, sometimes I notice it 2-3 times in an hour, sometimes none at all. I can sometimes tell if one is planning to breach, he will normally swim up to the middle of the tank and take a slight pause before swimming to the surface and darting back to...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

I also notice from time to time one of the Corys or Tetra will sprint up to the surface for gulp of air and immediately dart back into the water. To me it doesn't look like they are gulping for air. The tank has lots of plants but I keep the light on for 11.5 hours a day. Hopefully it's normal...

Thanks @Byron and @seangee. Naturally as a beginner I'm always worried I'd starve the fish :) I'll experiment reducing the feed to ensure that they are minimal wastage.

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

Still trying to get my feeding right. Currently I feed twice a day with flakes and pellets for the Cory. Neons seems to be very eager with the flakes, normally finishing most within 5 minutes. There are minor amounts left on the substrate. Corys are very shy and it’s hard to get the pallet feed...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

It’s indeed strange. Definitely not fungus, looks a bit like a cross between shrimp shell or decomposed plant material. There are 2 or 3 tiny shrimps in the tank so I don’t think it’s that.

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

So today roughly after a week I noticed loads of white flakes at the bottoms of the tank. To me they look like decomposing plant matter. I plan to suck them up best I could later. Fish seems healthy, Corys are bit shy and avoiding their pallets. Any ideas what they are?

Tetras seems to be preferring the botto half of the tank when the lights are on. I've got some floating plants on the way and hopefully once my other plants grow a bit taller they will be more confident to swim higher. I've had a look at other LED lights and they are not cheap! Shame mine...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

Thanks both for the advice :) In regards to plants I'm going with local shop (Pets At Home in the UK) as other suppliers don't seem to have the plants we want. I've gone for some Salvinia Auriculata as floating and more Heteranthera Zosterifolia to fill the right side of tank. In regards to...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

For our next addition to the tank, assuming everything goes well after few weeks, is x10 Odessa Barb – Puntus sp. and 8 more Panda Corydoras. I've been researching and looks like they should be compatible to the Neon Tetras however not too sure about the Corys. We would also be getting Nerite...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

We do have some floating plants,I believe they are water lettuce but need to check with my daughter as she is the expert in this area :) Only a few in the tank at the moment and most of the time they clump together due to the flow. You can see some in the video near the heater. However they...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

Thanks for the info :) Neon tetras seems more settled now. I’ve given them some flakes. Fed Corys with a pellet too. They seem to prefer the side glass near filter suction area. Not easy to video them as they scramble and hide if I approached the side glass. Tetras also seem happier with tank...

New to tropical fish - seeking some advice

Didn’t realise Corys like to swim so high in the tank. Always thought they are mostly at the bottom. The tetras on other hand seem to prefer hiding at the bottom on the tank in the plants. Wonder if I should turn the flow down a bit.

Fish finally here and looks like they are settling in fine :) Corys are really active and some of them seem to like to school near the filet at the top end of the tank. Looks like plenty of space left in tank for more fish in the future :)
