Interesting - mine do not have those tubers. I got this plant at the best LFS within a 30 min drive of Seattle. Really looks like the same leaf though.

I searched green lotus (aquarium) and got some similar images but definitely not the same plant. This has very supple leaves that move quite fluidly with the current in the water. It’s gotta be pretty common.

What to make of these readings?

Thanks Byron. I did the regular pH test first, got that acidic reading of 6.0-ish, then figured I must be in the higher range so that was reason for both tests done. I'll look into the water authority. I've learned, probably from your posts about sub-7 pH taking ammonia somewhat out of the...

What to make of these readings?

Still trying to get a reliable alkalinity reading, water is very soft however.

What to make of these readings?

Ok - what do you use for pH testing BTW? I'm a little confused because Seattle tap water supposedly has a range of 7.2-8.2.

What to make of these readings?

I'm in the midst of a fish-less cycle, ammonia is between 2.0-4.0 ppm, nitrite is somewhere between 2.0 ppm and 5.0 as well. What I can't ascertain is my pH reading. I have Seachem "pH alert" and "ammonia alert" in-tank dangling gauges that supposedly give constant readouts, the latter of...

I’ve had angels and kuhli loaches in the past and although I did a lot of things wrong back then, that wasn’t one of them. Good tank mates in my experience.

    No Chemical Changes

FWIW I’d definitely invest in an adjustable heater when your budget allows. You’ll want to be able to make changes in temperature if needed for treating illness or just to compensate for outside, environmental temp changes. I think for a 29 high a 100 watt or more would be needed.

What Should I stock in a 55 gallon?

I don’t see a location on my phone version of TFF, but on my desktop the OP’s location reads Bothell, which is a suburb of Seattle. So likely very soft water and a pH of low 7s to low 8s.

    Bala shark in trouble! Help!!

We still do not know the size of the OP's tank, though it seems unlikely it's 125 gallons or more. I hope once the shark is cured, no more are added as "friends", particularly significantly smaller, younger Bala sharks. The larger one will almost certainly kill it/them.

    air stone vs foam filter

I think the bigger issue is you’re overstocked for a 55 gallon, particularly those bala sharks which each will grow to over a foot long. It will be recommended by folks more knowledgeable than me that you return some fish, for their well being. I’m not criticizing, heck I have 3 clown loaches...

    Lace rock effect on pH

OK. This should work out just fine then. I do plan on keeping a couple of angels, yoyo loaches, a pleco and maybe others in that pH range. As long as it’s not going to bump me up to 8.0 or more all’s well. Thanks Colin.

    Lace rock effect on pH

Yes you’re absolutely right, the GH and KH here are near zero. A lot more plant life will soon be coming as well as the aforementioned driftwood. I don’t know how it works chemistry-wise but there’ll be much more surface area that is wood than whatever this rock is. But then the rock is super...

    Lace rock effect on pH

No, I only rinsed it thoroughly with water and scrubbed it with a stiff-bristled brush then placed it. It's been in there maybe 2 hours, any point in the vinegar thing now? A couple pics:
