    Heater Overkill?

Any suggestions for heaters? Don't want to spend over $25 for a small heater.

    Torn Fin

I don't know. I haven't received a shipping confirmation yet. My earliest estimate would be sometime mid next week. Honestly, there isn't any other option for me. I can take him out but he'll be harassed by the female bettas again. I will not leave the house to risk getting infected with Covid-19.

    Heater Overkill?

It would be too big and unsightly, but it'll be in the back of an all-in-one system so you won't see it. I'd like to get other people's opinions because I've heard not to get a small heater to heat up a larger volume of water as it puts too much strain on the heater itself, but never heard of...

    Torn Fin

So I found a solution until the new tank arrives. He'll sit in the large net away from the females and still get clean water and food. Thanks to Viking for the idea.

    Heater Overkill?

I don't want to buy another heater when I already have one. Problem is it's a cobalt neotherm 300watt heater. I'm getting a 5 gallon tank...is this overkill? My assumption is that it isn't because the heater will only keep the water at the temp I set it to and won't really matter how strong the...

Low Tech Planted Tank + High Light LED

I like trimming as well, but I already have to maintain a 75 gallon and my wife already upset how much time I spend on that one. So a low maintenance tank is my only other option. And no Co2 system. I have zero experience with pressurized Co2, but maybe someday.

    It'll be a 5 gallon.

Low Tech Planted Tank + High Light LED

Ah, forgot to mention...it is for my male betta, I made the mistake of putting him in a tank with four female bettas.

    Torn Fin

It's isn't exactly torn, just sort of perforated, never seen that before. But I will keep him happy until his new home arrives. I actually just purchased it!

Low Tech Planted Tank + High Light LED

thanks @Byron I think I can reduce the lighting to 75%, which is bright enough and reduce the amount of hours it's on. I also plan on getting floating plants to block out the light a bit. Viking recommended nerite snails as well.

Low Tech Planted Tank + High Light LED

Hey guys, Trying to set up a nano tank (5 gallons) with an ONF nano led, which has pretty high par readings. I don't want to do a lot of trimming and replanting so I'm going with low tech plants (dwarf hair grass, java fern trident, anubias, crypts, etc.). My question is I'm afraid of the high...

    Torn Fin

Yeah, I didn't know. This is my first time caring for Bettas and only went with my own knowledge that males are the most aggressive and dominant, even over females. It's strange because he was dominant for a long time until recently. Maybe the females grew bigger and that changed the dynamics?
  15. cupofjoel

    Torn Fin

I just removed him. I feel so bad. I always thought males were the dominant one and really was for the past couple of months!
  16. cupofjoel

    Torn Fin

Hold on I just saw one of the larger of the females chasing the MALE! Is that even right? I thought males were the dominant ones!
  17. cupofjoel

    Torn Fin

Also, I've noticed him being more inactive. He's just hovering near the surface of the water when he usually chases the females and will move around like he owns the place. He also didn't seem interested in eating when it was lunch time.

    Torn Fin

There are four female bettas in there with him. It's a 75 gallon with plenty of hiding places.

    Torn Fin

My betta seems to have a perforated tear along his bottom fin. I see small bits of his tail floating in the water. There is nothing sharp in the tank to tear his fins on. I don't think it's fin rot because there are other tankmates in there and they all seem fine and they all have been there...

    Stocking Question(s)

I have a 75g tank with an Oase biomaster 600 filter with around 4L of bio media (matrix). I was wondering how many fish I could keep while keeping ammonia, nitrite at zero and some nitrate (10-20ppm). I like rasboras and tetras
  21. cupofjoel

    Stocking Question(s)

I guess I should have been clearer. My tank is 75g, but pondguru said in a heavily stocked tank it safely cycle the water equivalent to 40g. AM I misunderstanding him?

    Top 5 fish you've kept???

I love rummynose, but always avoided it because I heard they are difficult to keep healthy...they are less hardy.

    Stocking Question(s)

Pondguru pimped out an Oase Biomaster 600. I got one as well and have around 4L of Seachem matrix in it. He said that you could have a heavily stocked tank that would cycle around 40-45 gallons. Also, let's assume my bio-media is mature and cycled. My question is, what do you all consider a...

    Top 5 fish you've kept???

Here are my top 5: 1. Bettas (so much personality) 2. Tiger Barbs (rowdy and playful) 3. Cardinal Tetras (peaceful and calming) 4. Boesmani Rainbow (what's not to love about them!) 5. Guppies (Love how they are fearless and always picking at things in your tank)

    What Does Your Betta Eat?

I feed Hikari pellets and dried blood worms, they go nuts for both.

    Am I losing my mind?

Sweet I'll look into that. It'll be nice to have a test that isn't so demanding when you need to test regularly.
  27. cupofjoel

New to this...but this seems VERY wrong

That is so wrong and cruel to those fish. There is no excuse for this!

    snail takeover!!

As stated by the members above they are thriving on something (uneaten food, fish waste, etc.) Once their food supply is gone you will see a reduction in their numbers. Snails are welcome in my tank anytime...I consider them free maintenance workers! By the way, any dwarf puffer owner would...

    Am I losing my mind?

Okay just did the test properly and it did change to an orangish color which means I'm between 10-20 ppm , which is okay by me!

    Am I losing my mind?

I have five bettas. And no, I did not! I only shook vigorously for 30 seconds. I have to shake it again for a minute and wait 5 mins? I must have skipped reading that part lol. I'll try again. Thanks!

    Am I losing my mind?

I know he's knowledgeable and a long time member, but honestly, he can be more humble and tactful when he writes things. He reminds me of people who make the hobby miserable for others. For example, someone goes to their LFS and is a beginner and then gets a bunch of judgmental looks and remarks...

    Am I losing my mind?

I agree about the 6-in-1 strips, they aren't the best, which is why I opted for the API test. To my knowledge I did exactly what the booklet asked me to do...5ml of tank water, 1st bottle add 10 drops, shake several times, add 10 drops of 2nd nitrate bottle and shake for 30 seconds. I'll try...

    Our first tank

I agree with the members above. Ammonia and nitrite will stress out your fish. Stressed out fish can be bad because it can make them susceptible to illness. You'll also be pleasantly surprised how happy your fish will be after a water change! Great looking tank too!
  35. cupofjoel

    Am I losing my mind?

I appreciate your thorough post. I know my Ammonia is probably not able to be broken down to nitrite, I have strong filtration and run seachem purigen. But that doesn't explain why zero nitrates are present in my tank when I'm dosing ferts and I do see quite a bit of detritus and bioloads from...

    Am I losing my mind?

Well the funny thing is...people recommend doing frequent water changes to control high nitrate levels in the tank, but I don't have any! IS my water test kit faulty?

    Low Tech Planted Tank

It would only have a single male betta. 10 hours is a long time to have that much intense lighting no? I've always hovered around 6-8 hours in my 75 gallon tank. Anymore and I'm afraid of algae.
  38. cupofjoel

    Am I losing my mind?

I finally got my hands on an API master kit to test my water parameters. I specifically wanted to test my nitrate levels since I'm seeing various types of algae bloom, specifically BBA, brown algae, and green spot algae. My nitrates are at 0! What in the world! I'm dosing ferts 2-3 times a...

    Low Tech Planted Tank

Hey everyone. I've always wanted a low tech tank with a high tech look. Please let me know if I'll have issues with algae if I go with this setup. 14 x 14 x 14 cube (10 gallon capacity) plant substrate (uns controsoil) ONF nano light (the bottom of my tank will most likely be 75-100 par)...
