    Quest for plakat fry

The larger ones have begun picking on the smaller ones, so 5 have been jarred. they get daily water changes. I obviously have a favorite who appears to be male but he will not hold still long enough for decent pictures and half the time he is not colored up. The jarred ones are eating micro...

    Planted Betta Sorority (Pic Heavy)

Came home from work that same night and they were still going at it. Shortly after Otabek seemed to of had enough and chased the female away. I had a heck of a time fishing her out. As to be expected, whenever I decide to talk about my bettas laying eggs, the male decides to eat them. I don't...

    Friend for my Gourami

Nick is right, the ph is far too low to keep the live bearers healthy. A pH of closer to 8 is better for them as they need the higher levels of minerals. My original fish reccomendation still stand though. Most tetra species like softer water and the gourami should be right at home.

    10 gallon stocking ideas?

Corydoras need a larger tank and a group of 6+ preferably. I would not pick neon tetras, I feel they need a larger tank as well because they are active fish. Truly there aren't many schooling species that will get on well in a 10gal tank. Smaller species of rasboras can do ok but because of...

    Friend for my Gourami

Gourami, much like bettas, do not get lonely. Fish in general do not have much need for companions unless they are schooling/shoaling fish. At most the gourami tolerates other tank mates, which is better than them attacking or being picked on by them. In a 30gal you should be plenty able to...

    Planted Betta Sorority (Pic Heavy)

Then I'll be taking some photos tomorrow. Surely today I will have double tail betta eggs. They've just started doing the embracing but as per usual I have to head to work in a few minutes. If they finish before I get home there should be plenty of places for the female to hide.

    ob holding

From one African keeper to another, I'm curious to know how you go about raising your fry. I've got a 20 and 29gal full of fry, probably too full actually. I'm basically over run with with them and should probably weed out the runts. I don't even keep all the batches, only one here and there and...

    assorted Africans

They look amazing. I was also able to nab one from my LPS. I told them I called dibs on a few when their breeding group spawned. The owner was a bit selfish and decided to keep all the fry for himself. Luckily he missed one and it ended up in the mixed African tank. It was such a tiny thing but...

    Ghost shrimp or macrobrachium (sp?)

The main indicator of the carnivorous, fish eating macros is their long and relatively thick claws. I can't see the claws but yours does look like a ghost shrimp.

male Betta fish may have pop-eye?

The left eye is indeed swollen so it is likely the beginning of popeye. For the next few days try doing daily 50% water changes. Extra water changes are proven to help fish heal faster. If the eye does not get worse during these few days, then keep up with the water changes for at least a week...

    Planted Betta Sorority (Pic Heavy)

I'm not confident enough to try for tank of the month. I look at my tanks and all I see are flaws, the biggest on this tank being great big scratches on the glass. But I will agree, my crypts are awesome. They are my pride and joy. Your crypts are growing in fast, soon you will be overrun with them.

male Betta fish may have pop-eye

It gets a little confusing when there are duplicate posts. I replied to your other thread a bit ago so you might want to check that out.

male Betta fish may have pop-eye?

Can you get more pictures of different angles? One from the top and then one of either side would work. Is the eye cloudy at all? Cloudy-ness means infection of some sort, either bacterial or fungal in nature. I have only had one betta with pop eye and it took ages for him to recover from it...

    Planted Betta Sorority (Pic Heavy)

I suppose it is time for an update. The largest of the black loaches decided to try squeezing into a very small hole in the internal HOB filter and I didn't see this until it was too late. So now there's 2 lonely black kuhlis, Otabek, and a nerite snail. I put a nylon stocking over the loach...

    Toddler terrorized our aquariums

5gals is a small tank so it should be easy to just drain all the water while vacuuming up all the crud. If there aren't any live plants and just plain old gravel and fake decor I would simply rise the whole thing out with some clean water a few times in the bath tub. Just keep the filter media...

    Molly jumping..

Definitely don't remove fish from the tank unless you need to drain it completely and/or are moving the tank. Don't be too disheartened though, I've made a similar mistake with a rainbow fish. I think we've all had fish take a leap of faith, only to find them shriveled up or half dead on the...

    Water changes

I do not think 2 weeks is long enough to cycle the tank properly but depending on what bacteria you used it might be cycled already. Can you post the number results of the test, also what test are you using? Strips can be a bit off while liquid test kits are usual far superior for accurate...

Cherry Shrimp Breeding But No Young Survive.

In all honestly this seems odd to me. The only thing that I can think of is the water is too soft. Take a look at this: http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/CO2/khgh.html I'm not totally fluent in the whole hardness and pH stuff, but your water seems to be on the soft side. Shrimp generally need a...

Upside down catfish looking beaten up

18gals is a bit on the small side for the stocking you have but I've seen worse. Keep up on water changes and maybe think about up grading to a larger tank. Those mollies and even the catfish really need something more like a 29gal, also the upside down cats seem to like having friends, so all...

Looking to keep an all female Betta tank. What do I need to know/be aware of?

Before getting fish I say plant it with all live plants. Live plants are a must for bettas. You can never have too many plants. Also, make sure the bettas are of a similar size when you add them. Try to pick the more docile females and make sure they are indeed females rather than immature...

Upside down catfish looking beaten up

I wouldn't put it past the dwarf gourami to pick on the catfish. As for the white patches, doesn't look all that bad to me but the pics are a bit blurry. My upside down cats will often turn all white on the upper halves of their body, looks pretty weird actually. They only do this when they are...

Upside down catfish looking beaten up

What other species are kept with the catfish? Upside cats love to hide in tight spaces. It could be doing that and getting all scratched up. Might be a good idea to get a larger hiding spot. Mine seem to love hanging around under pieces of driftwood.

    Newbie Betta Mom

Shoot more for 50% daily water changes. You seem new to this so I would do some reading on the Nitrogen cycle. The nitrogen cycle is basically how fish waste is broken down to less harmful products, and we have to preform water changes to keep those products (nitrates) at a safe level. I would...

    Albino Pleco?

Now it looks like an albino! Must of just been the lighting making it appear orange to me. It's hard to be sure when they are so small, but I will say its either a bristle nose or a common pleco. I'm almost leaning towards common based on the pair of barbles on its mouth, but let's hope it's a...

    stocking a planted 20 long

The live bearers are not really compatible with the ram and gourami. What is your pH and water hardness? You should try matching fish to your water parameters out of the tap rather than getting fish that will need different water parameters. Also, I would not keep a pearl gourami in a 20gal...

Goldern Algae Eater has enough food?

It is impractical to expect a fish to survive only off of algae growing in the tank. It is not going to end well. You need to feed him/her algae wafers and maybe even sinking shrimp pellets. That is a Chinese algae eater and they prefer a meatier diet as they grow, yours looks to be on the thin...

    A Quick Study

You don't want to keep only a pair of female bettas in a 10gal. Sororities need to be a larger tanks with more females. Even 4 females is on the low side. You could probably keep the ember tetras in the 10gal and up their numbers to 7 or so but that is all I would keep in a 10gal. I think the...

    Albino Pleco?

Need better angles of it to determine species. Doesn't really look like an albino but perhaps a low quality super red or calico bristle nose. The eyes would be different with a true albino and it would be more yellow-white than orange.
  35. Demeter32

    A Quick Study

Hard to tell from the angle, but that female betta might actually be a male, hence why it wasn't getting along in the sorority. Can you get some better angles of the betta, perhaps with one where it is flaring at a mirror? The pelvic fins and overall body shape suggest a male plakat to me. Can...

    How to stock my tank

None as your tank is already over stocked. For the number and species of fish you already have, I wouldn't keep then in anything less than a 55gal tank. If the gourami are Trichopodus trichopterus they will grow a good 6 inches while the angels will also grow quite large. Having so many large...

How to tell if you have over stocked my tank

Agree with Nick, you are very overstocked and the ammonia will/is making the fish ill. If you were to return the knife fish, mollies, loach, guppies and maybe the plecos (depends on species) then you could fill the tank with more appropriate fish that match your water parameters and tank size.

    Fat or pregnant fish???

The anal fin look pretty pointed to me so this platy might not be a female after all. Young males can tank some time before developing their man parts and will look like females till then. I might be wrong, but you might find that the platy's anal fin become more pointed after a couple more...

What can I mix with my Malawi Cichlids?

Some catfish species can get along, just stick to species of synodontis. Other than that, only other Africans should be with them.

    Planted Betta Sorority (Pic Heavy)

I am severely regretting adding those three banded loaches. All the new ones died in much the same fashion as the first. Odd seizure like movements, deaths rolls and then going limp. I took a video of the first loach and plan to upload it shortly. I have no clue what happened with these new...
