    White spots

Can you post some pictures just to be sure? White specs all over a fish is a sure sign of ich but I would stay away from treating with meds. All ich meds need to be added to the main tank, which isn't a problem but most meds for ich contain formalin and M. green, both of which will kill your...

    ICH or not ICH

It does look like ich but it is odd the spots aren't falling off. What is the temp raised to and what meds are you treating with? Any other other fish in the tank and are they being effected as well?

    sticking heaters

I've had preset heaters die on me and one never stopped heating the tank. I tested it by filling a mason jar and set it in there. Came back a bit later and the jar was hot! I prefer adjustable heaters now but they are rather hard to come by for smaller tanks, and they can be quite pricey.

Betta laying on bottom and panting

Can you post some pictures? She could be egg bound in which case the result is often death. Adding epsom salt might help but if she's already at the point of acting lethargic it might be too late. Without pictures I can't say for sure though.

    Algae in tank floor

I had a similar problem and it cleared up just fine after a few days with minimal light, extra water changes, and with the addition of duckweed along with cherry shrimp. The duckweed dampened the light as well as sucked up the extra nutrients in the water, effectively starving the blue-green...

    My 7 Gallon Tank

None of those species will get on very well in such a tiny tank. Zebra danios like their swimming space and prefer to be in large groups to be happy. Same for platties. Perhaps if you upgrade to something like a 20gal long you can add more danios and a few more platties but I think the algae...

    Stress or Parasite?

Hypothetically all fish carry the internal parasites that cause the white stringy poo which is often accompanied by a sunken belly and sometimes spitting food. It is only when fish are under stress or kept in poor conditions that their immune systems are compromised, allowing the parasites to...

    Betta laying on heater

Can you post a picture of the tank? Also, what size is the tank, is it filtered, and did you cycle it before adding the betta?

    Very sick female guppy

Are the test results from the main tank or from the quarantine? Either way, you need to be doing some major water changes in that tank to get the nitrites and ammonia as close to zero as possible. Those levels are deadly, in a cycled tank both should be zero at all times. This is what is causing...

    HELP! Mysterious "gunk"?

Is this a newer tank? Can you test for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate then post the results? Does this tank have a filter and heater? The film on the surface of the water is bio-film, a thin layer of proteins that build up in stagnant water (no surface movement). Usually the movement from a...

    Micro planted tank

Ah yes a fellow whovian. A friend from church gifted the sonic screwdriver to me after I gave them a painting. As we know, the screwdriver does not do wood. Good thing there's no wood in the tank.

    hi all, newbie quick question

You might be better off building a tank that will fit the limited space. The only tank that comes to mind for that length/width is the average 10 or 20gal tank. You can certainly hide a heater and filter in a 10gal via plants and/or driftwood but you will not be able to keep mollies very well in...

    Micro planted tank

I changed some of the plants, hopefully for the last time. I took out a lot of the ludwigia, all but one jungle val and added in a crypt that will hopefully fill up the left side. Vitya still hasn't eaten any of the shrimp, maybe some babies but all the adults are accounted for. Out of all...

Betta compatibility in a 15 gallon tank

If you insist on tank mates, I suggest you switch your substrate to sand and then try out the pygmy corries. It all depends on the betta, I've had a male betta actively go after corydoras so he was moved to his own tank. It is not a good idea to expect an active species to work out in a betta...

White Larvae in the Betta Tank

Those are probably some type of planaria, pretty harmless but unsightly. They usually crop up due to over feeding and/or a build up of gunk in the substrate. I suggest you do more regular water changes while vacuuming the gravel. I think two 50% water changes a week will work wonders. How big...

    Heavily Pregnant platy help

Either way, no fish should behave like then even if they are full of fry. The deformity is likely the cause of her laying on her side. If she happens to drop fry theirs a good change some may have a similar deformity, in which case you should either keep for yourself or cull.

Need help with tank and filter for guppy fry.

A 20gal is a good size for growing out guppy fry.You will need a sponge filter along with a heater and fry food. I always say it's a good idea to invent in micro worms. A cheap 5$ starter culture will last you forever if cared for properly. Micro worms are the perfect size for young fry but...

    Heavily Pregnant platy help

That fish is not healthy. Has she always had a deformity like that? Her tail is a bit frayed/torn too. When did she start laying on her side? Btw that appears to be a guppy from the angles the pictures were taken from.

Looks like a damsel fly nymph. Hope you don't have small fish, they will try catching and eating them.

Help! I need to create water movement..

Not particularly, they all work the same, just get the little blue or white ones. Do you have an air pump on hand? If not you will need one of those too, again, nothing too fancy will be fine.

Help! I need to create water movement..

Marimo, while beautiful, do not grow fast therefore they do not do much at all for removing the nutrients in the water. Floating plants like wisteria or water sprite are fast growing and betta love to rest in them. Another way to get rid of bio film is to add an air stone. You can get...

    Fish tanks

If I were to ever keep large fish, I'd either have and outdoor pond, much like a big koi pond, or an in ground swimming pool built in the basement. Either way it would be very large, I'm talking thousands of gallons. Of course I am neither rich nor do I have my own house so that adventure will...

    Cloudy Tank / Fish Panting

Yes, you must do water changes till the tank has cycled. Doing a 50% water change every day is needed IMO. Shouldn't be too hard as it is a little tank. You do not want any ammonia or nitrites. Ammo lock is only a temporary fix. If I remember correctly the effects wear off over time and the...

    Mystery cichlid

That is definitely not an Aulonocara (peaock). Nor is it a convict cichlid, look at the eyes, long body, relatively short fins. Even young convicts are much more rounded in body. The head shape is far to blunt and the body too long. I can pretty much guarantee it is a mbuna. As to which species...

    Mystery cichlid

Getting a better look at the head, that does indeed look like an African cichlid, probably a mbuna or some sort. I could be wrong of course, but that's what it looks like to me. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get the little guy his/her own tank. Do you have any spare tanks on hand? If so what...

    Mystery cichlid

I think a few more pictures will help. Either that is a huge moss ball or it is a very small fish. I can't see the head shape very well but the body and fins look more African cichlid rather than American to me. If it is just a young cichlid you probably won't be able to get a good ID on it...

    Stressed Betta Fish

Check out the nitrogen cycle, this plays a huge role in a fish's healthy. I think changing a good 75% of the water right now is a good idea. Side note, does the fish have trouble swimming in the current of the filter? Bettas do not like much flow in their tanks. If the flow is pushing him...

    baby bettas

Hmm I bought a "baby boy" DT a while back but I was pretty sure it was a female from the start. I really like getting good deals on baby bettas, especially when their fin types are not the usual CT or VT. Keep us updated, I love seeing how young bettas turn out. This is my how my DT turned...

Please help! I cant find this glass canopy anywhere

You could probably make your own hinge too. Something pliable, maybe even silicone, spread on the top with a small gap between the two pieces might work. I'd say it's worth a shot rather than buying a whole new lid.

    Try for the "blackwater" look

I think things are ok in the sorority now. Everyone is calmed down, the largest betta fry have been added and no one seems worse for wear. I went shopping on the 27th and was tempted by the light colored bettas. I just couldn't say no, they looked so good. This one was in a tank with other...

African Cichlid Tank - 10 Gallon?

With a pH so low I think you are better of looking into soft water fish. Small species that are colorful and will fit in a 10gal (considered a nano tank) are few and far between but I'll try linking a few. http://seriouslyfish.com/species/dario-dario/...

African Cichlid Tank - 10 Gallon?

Firstly the fish you listed will not do well in a 10gal tank. Think more along the lines of a 55gal for those fish. I suggest you do some researching and see what certain fish need before setting a tank up for them. http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/Melanochromis-auratus This is just one of...
