    Missing fish

I've had fish go missing in my 240L tank. I blamed the raphael cats. At one point, I lifted up all the logs and slate caves searching for one (a juvenile panda cory), but never even found remains. Recently lost a black cory which never grew out quite right -- it was small and weirdly stunted...

    Most boring fish

The OP needs to work on training their raphael. ;) My two Platydoras armatulus have learned to fire out of their hiding places at feeding time and charge around the tank like little black and white tanks, so I see them every day. The clown pleco, on the other hand, forever hides behind logs...

    Baby Cory!

If it's 1cm, it will be doing alright without too much extra faff. I had my C. schulzei and C. habrosus (they live in different tanks) spawn at roughly the same time. Found the schulzei eggs, removed them to a fry tank, went through the whole routine of daily water changes, fry food two or...

    ‘short body’ corydoras

One of my Pets at Home black corys ended up short and stumpy, unlike its pals. It died recently. I wasn't surprised. Not intentionally bred that way -- just a genetic screw-up -- but I heard from a good source that issues in C. schulzei are common because they're overbred and inbred. And mine...

    55g Rebuild

I tried floating plants in my 240L and not one survived. Frogbit, salvinia, and duckweed. Nae luck. Now that tank has a powerhead so there's no point in further floating plant attempts. Tried hornwort in my 70L tank, and that also disappeared. I've now got anacharis in there, which seems to be...

ID for a catfish (I think)

If you're looking for suitable loricariids, rubberlip plecos, or Chaetostoma formosa, like hard water. Mine was way too soft. :( I think they're pretty. But you need to be able to keep your temperature down to 22-23C and have some flow your tank.

    New addition -- CW006

Yeah, that tank has had its dramas, but it seems to be ticking along. Narcisso corys chasing one another and very briefly going into "T" position earlier this evening. Could they be thinking about breeding?? If they do spawn, they'd better bloody well do it when someone's around, otherwise, the...

The narcisso corys seem to enjoying their new home. They've made friends with the CW045s and have been cruising around corying. It's not Peru, but it must seem like luxury compared to whatever containers they were transported in and the shop tanks.

    New addition -- CW006

Do you have one of those API GH/KH testing kits? I've found it far more useful than whatever Scottish Water tells me is coming out of Reservoir 4 in Milngavie, and once you start faffing around with it, you'll need to test it anyway. GH comes from calcium and magnesium in the water (insofar as...

    New addition -- CW006

If I lived in a hard water area, I would totally have African cichlids instead of assorted South American catfish and friends. They're really pretty. To be honest, all this GH/PH/KH stuff sometimes does my head in. I've learned enough to keep my fish going, but not much more. I threw cuttlebone...

    New addition -- CW006

I'd trust Seriouslyfish, which says they can cope with GH up to 12-ish. But not a high PH. However, I did try to give them ammonia poisoning and they never looked ill nor sorry (or we figured out how to do a fish-in cycle, quickly). The only black phantom death I've had was a female, who...

    New addition -- CW006

They're black phantom tetras (and one rummynose darting in front of the camera). Nothing super rare, but they did well for us through our newbie fishkeeping/dubiously cycled tank stage and caused no drama. Would recommend them to anyone with soft water. Haven't posted any photos of that tank...

    New addition -- CW006

Picked up three CW006 (the black and white one), or apparently narcisso corys, according to PlanetCatfish. Photo isn't great because they're spooky and run into the plants if I get too close to the tank. They will soon learn that I am the provider of blackworms. Tempted to grab one or two...

    Angry Angelfish, New Tank Keeper

My OH's parents live in Lincolnshire, and their water is really hard. It's like liquid hard. They have a 150-ishL tank housing some flying foxes, which breed like rabbits, and they used to have barbs of some sort but they died off. I don't believe they use their tap water for water changes...

(Update post #26) Dithers or more cories?

Found your video of the tank. Hard to tell from the video, but it looks like it has less flow than my 240L. You'd be totally fine with rummys, black phantoms, or any other similar tetra.

(Update post #26) Dithers or more cories?

The fish tanks are very much a mutual venture, so OH and I need to be an agreement about how we manage them. My cherry barbs are little f^&(-ers and left to me, they would be rehomed, but OH likes them and refuses to entertain that idea.

(Update post #26) Dithers or more cories?

I have rummynose and black phantom tetras in my 240L tank. It has one powerhead, along with whatever flow a Fluval 307 provides. I would not want the tetras in any more current, but they seem fine with the amount that's there. The phantoms frequently spawn. No idea if it has more or less flow...

    Looking for 1-2 fish for a 10g

The bamboo and vampire shrimp that live in my 125L tank seem fine with my weekly 75% water changes. But I've read everything about cherry shrimp, from stuff saying they are really hardy, to stuff saying they will drop dead at the slightest variation in water temperature.

    Looking for 1-2 fish for a 10g

Okay, cool. You learn something new every day. How often should I do water changes with the six week old corys? A wee invertebrate would be nice but maybe not for that tank. :( Snails don't like our soft, acidic water, and I don't want to risk a dead snail in a tiny tank.

    Looking for 1-2 fish for a 10g

Don't mean to hijack your thread, NC, but something you said made me think. I had the passing thought of adding cherry shrimp to my little fry tank, which currently contains Kubotai rasboras and two six week old corys. Would that be a bad idea, given the water changes required when a new batch...

The OP isn't "he." ;) That sponge is still there. At some point, I might get around to moving it. I want the apistos to breed, but waiting for the male to mature enough to get busy. He's a fair bit younger than the females. It might be another argument for hanging onto the sponge -- it will...

    Fish dead after water change

I've been doing circa 75% weekly changes with the Python for more than a year now. Our water comes from a reservoir just up the road, and it's hardly treated with anything. Before we had fish, we had sundews, for which we diligently collected rainwater because we read that's what you're supposed...

Yeah, kinda went through this process, but with a 7.6g tank, so not a lot of space to work with. My first thought was tiny rasboras, but I did some research to see if there was anything else that would work. I discounted most species for one reason or another. Ended up with the tiny rasboras.

Mine definitely prefers being the only pleco in the tank. Had a rubberlip pleco for about five months, and once it settled and got a bit full of itself, they would chase one another, and the bristlenose would spend more time hiding. The rubberlip died in early October, and the Ancistrus has gone...

Quarantine Tanks - how many of you use them?

Yeah, I don't know. In my inexperience and ineptitude, I've never solved more problems than I caused in a quarantine. Shrimp for plants

Tried cherry shrimp with L199s (Hypancistrus furunculus). It went badly for the shrimp, but well for the plecos. As ever, these things depend on your point of view. A few posts on internet message boards (not just this one) suggested that Hypans would be okay with cherry shrimp. Yeah, not so...

    Corydoras swimming up the surface

    Corydoras swimming up the surface

One of my CW045s and a C. schulzei frequently swim around the top, like in the OP's photo, but only after feeding time. The tetras are pretty rubbish at taking food from the water surface -- they grab it as it sinks downwards -- and the other corys and raphael cats scoop up food from the bottom...
