    Cycling tank (possibly without tests)

Hi, Am wondering about cycling my new 52 gal tank (brand petworx). This tank was the cracked tank that is now unusable. I would like it to be in use as soon as possible, however am wondering the best way to do it. 1. I don't currently have any test strips. I was recommended some, however...

Crack in new tank- please answer ASAP

Even though it didn't work, I don't regret my decision. It was worth a shot and I did what I could with what I had. It didn't cause any damage other than to my budget, and that was only because I needed to buy a new tank, which would have been the same even if I rejected it in the first place.

    Water changes.

I have to use buckets as the tanks are no-where near a water source, but if I'm desperate (eg. filling up a large 50 gal from scratch, which is a task I'll be carrying out this afternoon) I get the garden hose and link it directly to the water tank outlet.

    Ph way too high

I thought (keep in mind I have never kept a beta) peaceful betas (betas vary wildly in temperament) can live with lots of things, as long as the ph temp etc. is ok and they don't inhabit the same tank area (for example, cories). That IS a MASSIVE spike- have you added anything recently...

Where do you get your wood and rocks?

Not going to lie… you sound like my science teacher from way back when. One geology unit we had to do something called ‘the rock test’… they lined up 30 rocks (we didn’t know what they were going to be) and write down the name, mineral composition, type, etc… and you had to get 100% to pass...

    Riffle/bamboo shrimp care (please help)

When you say marine, do you mean saltwater or just for aquariums in general? Just curious. Also, will they accept crushed up flakes fed from a Pipette? I’ll try out a infusoria, but I’m sure that’ll attract some weird looks and even weirder comments from the people I live with…

    Riffle/bamboo shrimp care (please help)

Alrighty… HI everyone, have just discovered there is a riffle (basically Australian native counterpart to bamboo) shrimp (that was caught from the creek) in my tank. (Just to be clear- I knew it was there but didn’t actually know what the shrimp was. Long story as to why it was there). Am...

Returning to forum after 10 years

Hi and welcome back! :hi: Classified sections still open (not sure about new members posting, sorry). It’s near the very bottom under the ’general’ subheading. That tank does sound amazing! I would love clown loaches but the only downside is the space they need… and coming home from holidays to...

    Julii cory dying...

Thanks. You may be some random internet guy but I take that as a high compliment :). Holidays are coming up, so if I work my fingers off I should be able to pay off the new tank (someone is picking it up for me tomorrow and loaning me the money until I can pay it off) soon(ish). So at least...

Could use help Identifying this redish purple plant i just bought

Hi, welcome to the forum! Sorry, really bad at plant id (this’ll be way off, just a random guess) but to me looks like some sort of hygrophylia. As to the red leaves (I know ever so slightly more about this)… it depends. Red leaves are usually better and more prominent in high tech (strong full...

What kind of shrimp is this?

After some research… 1. I answered my own question, it’s not harmful to fish and is more likely to be harassed by them 2. I doubt mine is a bamboo shrimp (yours might be). It is more likely called something called a ‘riffle shrimp’, which are Australian natives and are basically the same. I...

    Julii cory dying...

Thanks everyone. Sorry if I sounded a bit passive aggressive, I was just feeling a bit upset. I couldn’t check the water parameters sorry, because I currently don’t have a test kit. I was about to buy one, however my cracked tank that had been doing very well and was cycling (no fish, at least)...

    Tiger lotus bulb guarantee.

Well… yes. I would be kind of mad if it didn’t sprout, but I would never get the refund because I always am either too lazy or feel bad for the business because it ’wasn’t their fault’. So, likely I would expect it but not get it. Out of curiosity, do you have a certain criteria about refunding...

What kind of shrimp is this?

Seriously? That’s pretty cool that I have a wild red cherry shrimp in my tank… I actually like that morph a bunch more than the regular one :)! If you got the number of amanos that were in your order, maybe they just added that as a bonues…

2 tetras vanished from 10 gallon

Could they be in the filter? I have a built in filter in the back of my tank and fish were constantly getting stuck in behind it… fixed the problem now, but just a thought. Also, it may be obvious, but could something be eating them? And look for fish chips on the floor… tetras aren’t usually...

    Betta tail getting nipped.

Hi, 1. I LOVE your beta! (Sorry, slightly off topic, but it’s gorgeous ;)) 2. How large is your school of rummy noses? Often if the school is too small, they get a bit nippy from stress. It could also be the cardinals, but it is likely to be the rummy noses. 3. I’ve also heard that lowering...

    Julii cory dying...

Well, it’s dead. Pics are attached if anyone can ID. Dosed salt anyways in case it was contagious. The black thing in the second pic is a piece of bark. It seems to lose all its colour in its midsection, but that may have been because it died. I’ve learned my lesson-don’t buy expensive fish...

    Possible tank mate ,,,

How large are you thinking? There are several small (and unaggressive) cichlids you could try (german rams, bolivian rams, kribs) or maybe a gourami (possibly a pearl, opaline, chocolate.... NOT A DWARF (I hate dwarfs, they look cool but contract fish tuberculosis and are aggressive). On the...

What kind of shrimp is this?

I'm intently following this thread as I caught one exactly the same from the creek the other day and it is currently sitting in my (otherwise empty) big aquarium. I'm scared to put fish in with it though, as I've read horror stories about wild shrimp eating fish... I can say, however, that that...

    Julii cory dying...

UPDATE- did emergency stuff (wiped down glass, did large water change). Will add salt according to instruction, when I get home, but that won't be for ages, so not sure what to do. Any ideas? None of the other fish were sick at all when I left, so am thinking it was just the LFS as when the...

How large is the tank? And I'm assuming that the water is soft and acidic, which narrows it down a bit.

    Julii cory dying...

Yesterday morning, false julii was fine. Last night, it was a bit tired and wasn't moving around much, but still swam and didn't have clamped fins or anything. This morning, still no clamped fins/rapid breathing etc., but is rolling around on it's side. This is exactly what happened when the...

    Betta swelling and not eating

I’d say possibly worms. Read this. https://www.fishforums.net/threads/what-to-do-if-your-fish-has-stringy-white-poop.466276/ Also, I feel that it probably isn’t helping to have it in an uncycled tank, are you attempting a fish-in cycle? I belive that bettas prefer another laxative to peas, but...

    What Fish Are You ?

Is the thread still existent? (back in the fold face reveal, I mean). I wanna see it now... Btw, I would be a cory. They're chill, like friends, and LOVE exploring and snuffling around. Literally me. In case you couldn't tell from the name ;)

    64gal tank stocking

Thanks byron :) I'm going to aim to start with 7+ each for the pygmies and peppers, but I'm not going to re-home the julii just yet. I'll get him another 2 (or more, depending on the budget) friends, which'll cost me AUS $20 (which is 3 times less than the previous store I was going to) which...

    64gal tank stocking

I LOVE that idea Lcc! It is a bit sad that youtubers can't be bothered to cycle though... I guess when you're ripping down the tank in a month, it'll never really matter :( The Gourami dream is indeed alive, that's why I was curious to see if pearls and sparklers could go together. Just...

Crack in new tank- please answer ASAP

Sounds very cool… and technical. Had to look up at least half of those terms just then 😂 don’t have tons of space for a sump, unfortunately, and have already patched it. Alright, thanks guys AJ, following what you said probably won’t get a cichlid. They’ve always sacred me a bit… it was just one of those random ‘what if’ ideas and wasn’t particularly set on getting one, so thanks for confirming it wouldn’t work :) Lcc, yep, still going for the riparian...

    64gal tank stocking

Thanks for the quick reply. Only increasing tetras because I have 10 in a smaller tank and know that the bigger school, the better, and they are affordable enough for me to have a few. All right, I'm reviving it... So, how does this stocking sound? Aquarium light suggestions

Well, the cracked (not anymore!) aquarium is now up and cycling, with no problems so far, so my mind is turning to equipment. It came with a heater, so no problem there, and someone close to me just bought me a filter that seems to be working pretty well so far (guess I shouldn't say 'bought...
