    Scutariella Japonica?

I am glad to have taken such a good picture of the problem on “Big Red”. Looking at her this morning much of that white stuff is gone but there was still some there. This morning I used another salt dip, this time a little stronger than last time. I took 1 cup of water and used two teaspoons...

    Should I plant wisteria

I agree with what Byron said above. Your bristlenose is not likely to want to hang out in the plant. I have that plant floating in two of my aquariums and also planted. One of the pieces had some long roots, and I used my magnetic algae scraper to hold the roots up against the glass about 3/4...

    New kuhli loaches!

I have 4 Kuhli loaches and they always seem to make an appearance when I put some frozen blood worms into the tank. That is probably not the most nutritious food for them, probably considered more of a treat than a food. My black ones are out and about day or night. The orange and black ones...

Post your first tank vs. newest!

I’ve been keeping fish for a loooooong time so there is no picture of my first tank anywhere as far as I know. But I have some old pics from 2005-2007 of my aquariums at that time (all since gone and sold). Now I have 3 completely different tanks. If you want to see my old ones from 15 yrs...

    Scutariella Japonica?

This shrimp tank was started 7 months ago and is a 5.5 gallon tank. I use RO water and remineralize with GlasGarten Shrimp Mineral. There is a sponge over the intake and I squeeze it out weekly to improve flow. The filter is for a 10 gallon tank and the flow is adjustable, so the filtration...

    Ancistrus and Sandstone

My little ancistrus passed away, I am sad to say. I don’t know if it had anything to do with the sandstone or not, but I have taken the sandstone out of the tank and it will never go back into any of my tanks again.

    Kuhli Loaches?

They are fun to watch, aren’t they? I bought a used tank and it came with 4 of them, two orange/black ones, and two all black ones. I see the two black ones all of the time. The black ones are often swimming up and down the glass. I see them every time I look in my tank, swimming around the...

    Corydoras eye cloudy!

Could be flukes, there is such a thing as eye flukes. Not eating and breathing fast can also be signs of flukes. Perhaps Prazipro would be helpful.

    Kuhli Loaches?

It is recommended to have 5 Kuhli loaches as they like to be around others even though they are not a schooling fish. You probably won’t need to worry about babies as they are conditioned for breeding on live foods. Generally a breeder lowers the water in the tank and has a lot of floating...

    Liquid fertilizer and dirt substrate

With all the talk about fertilizer and such, I just also want to mention that goldfish eat plants and I used to provide fresh “salad” (anacharis, duckweed, etc) for my goldfish to eat. If you are keeping that goldfish in that small tank, it will outgrow it fast. One goldfish needs 15-20gal...

Help, my water is so green!!

Just put some beneficial bacteria in your tank before you go to bed and when you wake up in the morning your water will be clear. This happened to me before when I was keeping goldfish in a large aquarium.

Size terra-cotta pot for cryptocoryne lutea?

I keep a red tiger lotus in a 4” green plastic pot filled with gravel and some root tabs. That plant is notorious for taking over a tank and I’m keeping it contained in the pot. When roots come out the bottom, I trim them. I trim the leaves to train the plant into a bush and I haven’t allowed...

Why is MTS a real thing?

I love to create the underwater world for fish to explore. Caves, tunnels, plant variety, micro critters, etc. A new tank to me is like a blank canvass is to an artist. I admire the tanks that appear to be mini terrestrial landscapes and I love to look at them, but for me it is always the...

Do I need a new filter?

I also have a silentstream filter which is for a 5-10 gallon aquarium. It came with a 5 gallon aquarium “kit”. I’ve added a sponge over the intake to keep shrimplets from getting sucked in. I also add my own filter floss material to it instead of using one of their cartridges from time to...

    Black beard Algae help!!!!

I had an outbreak in my tank after adding some plants and Cory cats from a person who was tearing down their tank. Now I know why. I should have just adopted the cories and not worried about any of his plants. I did a lot of reading and searching online and tried the things I could easily do...

Pest Snails in a tank containing Red Shrimp

You can also collect them and offer them for sale/trade locally. Someone with a pea puffer, goldfish, or other snail eating fish, algae problem, etc., may be very interested in your excess snails. Personally I like having the snails in my aquarium. I always count on my cichlids to eat when I...

    Ancistrus and Sandstone

It’s an overcast and rainy day here, perfect for sitting in front of one of my tanks to observe happy fish doing their thing. I tossed in some food and just sat and watched. Laughed a little. Just enjoyed the show. I’m sure everyone here can relate. I was looking for the 3 nerite snails and...

    Crypts Falling Apart

Crypt melt is normal whenever the plants are disturbed, moved to a new tank, substrate changed, etc. Don't give up on them, just leave them be and you should see them begin to regrow back to normal soon.

    Shrimp Essentials

I am new to shrimp keeping being only 5 months into the hobby but I’ve been a fishkeeper most of my life (30+ yrs). The 10 red cherry shrimp I purchased in March 2022 had babies by the end of May 2022. They have since had several series of babies. Bought a 5.5 gallon kit in March 2022 which...

    Black red cherry shrimp?

The more I think about it, perhaps a baby accidentally got into your shrimp shipment, stuck in the net or something. I would imagine it would’ve been very hard to see such a brand new tiny baby.

    Black red cherry shrimp?

That shrimp is way too big to be a baby. If it didn’t come in with your order of red cherry shrimp then perhaps it miraculously survived in some plants or moss shipment for your pond.

I am a professional pet sitter and I have taken care of saltwater and freshwater aquariums for clients in the past, plus I have had aquariums for almost 40 yrs. Why not just have an experienced pet sitter who knows how to care for fish stop in and feed them once every few days? They can grab...

Good snails to clean the tank but look nice.

There are many beautiful nerite snails but be warned, if you get a female they will lay many little egg pods and they can be unsightly all over your aquarium driftwood and other decorations. Those egg pods are not easily scraped off. I bought four new rights nails and I kept them in separate...

    My first berried RCS

I am so excited to announce I’ve seen my first baby shrimp in my tank. It’s very hard to see but here is a picture of it. It is on the pale white area of a dying piece of plant material. I saw a speck with a tail swimming around my tank and it landed on that piece of plant material. My eyes...

I read that shrimp didn’t need a heater and that the cooler temps they’re kept in, the longer they will live. I keep them at the low end of the recommended temps on many of the shrimp seller’s websites.
