New cichlids are here and I’m in love

They're nice. Just don't fall too much in love with mbuna - they can break your heart!

Where to position pipes on an aquarium

It's fine. Just try to adjust the outflow so that it goes away from the intake, to move the water around. You don't want only the freshly filtered water to be pulled up the intake.

    Not crazy about them ?

The hobby is popular in Japan still. There is a lot of interest in small fish. The main linebreeding is medakas, although, alas, they do guppies too. There are a lot of good killifish breeders there.

    Not crazy about them ?

I had a friend who thought that dried and laquered, they'd make good ashtrays. But then everyone quit smoking, so his idea was done for.

    Sexing African Blood Caps???

I received mine, identified as breuseghemi too, and the group turned out to be both them and greeni. They were young, and the identification was made in the Congo by the exporter. I began to look for info on them as the differences developed over time, and realized the 'new' fish was the real...

    Red flame scarf gouramies

I'd say you are lucky if they aren't fighting, and if they get along with the Betta. They're a confusing fish, as a modified form of lalius. I've seen them sold with a couple of breeding/origin stories. It'll be interesting to see how well they hold their colour, or if they fade over the next...

    Sexing African Blood Caps???

The Latin name is one of the most difficult to write, for me. But you get a break - I actually think they're B greeni. I got both species in my last purchase. Both sexes of the 'exploding boil tetras' (how's that for a new trade name) have white on the fins, assuming I have both sexes. I have...

    Ripley's Aquarium of Canada

The only time I went I was taking a pile of 13 year olds on a field trip, so I couldn't look in detail. Like herding zebra danios, those kids. But it was a really good aquarium to visit. I certainly enjoyed it. I suspect you'll enjoy the book, too. It's a good one.

    My latest video

I didn't see the spawning, so it's hard to put a time on it. And they don't release the fry from their mouths til they've gone through the egg and larvae stage. In this story, the ending is sad as the first lot got swallowed. I jinxed it by writing it! It's a learning curve for them, and they...

    Barbels on danios

Danios are within the barb group, and guess where "barb" comes from? As for fading, that depends on the aquarium set up and numbers in their group, but mainly on the set up. If they are stressed, they fade.

    Red flame scarf gouramies

If they aren't rotten with disease, an unlikely thing with red flame versions, I would say one. No more. They hate each other.

How often to feed frozen brine shrimp

I used to feed them a few times a week, when I could get them cheaply. It all depends on what Cichlids you're feeding them to - different diets for different species and groups.

    Sexing African Blood Caps???

I'll take a good look at mine later. I refuse to call them "blood caps" though. That sounds like they lost a fight with Vikings.

    Virtual friends

@WhistlingBadger the Irish band is history? Huh. A few years ago, I digitized some old vinyl. Most of it was from obscure punk labels but one was a local label, of an Irish and Quebecois band. Yesterday I was in a foggy parking lot at a supermarket and they came on the mix. The bodhran and...

    Sexing African Blood Caps???

Usually, a rounder belly is female, because of eggs. Males tend to be more slender. So I suspect you've got it reversed.

    My latest video

And today, I noticed a young Chromidotilapia nana, the fish from the video, with a mouthful of eggs. I find a lot of mouthbrooders fail the first time around, but this is the first spawning from my F-1 generation, a year and a week since I returned from Gabon. I'm afraid to be hopeful, but...

    Aqua Clear 110 question

A thing I've learned with river Cichlids is that in many cases, a moving tank can be a peaceful one. They're a bit like dogs if you never walk them - the pent up energy has to go somewhere. I find when they get to swim against a more natural current, they burn off a lot of the energy that could...

    Inquiring minds want to know

There is no shorts answer, but there was a brief paper by Unterhosen, Boxer and Bequini that looked at the issue. It's with my lost socks though, and I can't locate it.

Weird old posts from 2000s lol

What I like in American football is you can have a game that's got a score of 28-7, and it sounds wildly action filled. But it's only a 4-1 game. The scoring is brilliant. It doesn't make the game interesting to me, but the big numbers make it look exciting. I think football/soccer should award...

Trying to Breed Aphyocharax rathbuni (Green Fire Tetra)

I haven't bred rathbuni. But with other tetras, I set up a tank that is dark, with very soft water. I separate the sexes for a week, and feed them well. I choose a tank of at least 5 gallons, ideally larger. I heat it to 25-26. I've been using craft/dollar store plastic plants, sold in mats. I...

    Aqua Clear 110 question

Why do you think the flow is too high? I was just rescaping a four foot 75 gallon this morning. It has an Aquaclear 110, an Aquaclear 70 and a mid-sized Fluval canister. I always lean toward flow, especially for riverine fishes.

    Not crazy about them ?

I don't think that's it. If you could see the big mollies with scarlet fins I saw in Belize, or sky blue bodied smaller mollies, with bright orange fins as are found in Mexico, I don't think an over-all orange fish is eye candy. That's a handsome sailfin, but the wilds can be just as eye...

    Not crazy about them ?

To be fair, most aquarists have never seen livebearers as they evolved in nature. We just see the breeder modified gumdrop coloured products sold in pet stores. Even that nice sailfin is totally unnatural, and in my opinion nothing beside a Poecilia velifera or petenensis out of Mexico. Natural...

    Is my Cherry Barb poorly?

She might have spinal or nervous damage from a cyst or tumour, or even a minor local paralysis from nerve damage/neurological damage. Their bodies are as complex as ours, and there can be a lot of things that go wrong that nothing can be done about.

    Albino Pelvicachromis pulcher

I bred some that were sold to me as albino P subocellatus, probably 20 years ago. Luckily, over half the fry had regular colouration, so I could see they were pulcher. I got rid of the albinos in an auction and kept pairs of the regular ones for a while, but compared to other pulcher around...

To add another “hairy fairy” or not.. that is the question…

They're Ancistrus, not Plecostomus. And my experience has been they get along fine in decent sized tanks. In small tanks, no. I've had all sizes together in 40s 75s and my 120. Mine are only half messed up, with the golden mutation. They aren't long finned too. They're the only linebred fish I...

    What are you doing today?

Today, along with a million household things, I am going to rinse out a bag of filthy Quikrete playground sand. It's been out back for a long time because I used some when I bought it, and was really not impressed. I did part of it yesterday evening, and it is really bad. It's supposed to be...

Well that’s never happened before… plant got too big… hanging pot clip failed…

This is why Zeus created coated gardening wire, and why Thor delivered it to every dollar store in the nation. It's very easy to hold large terrestrial plants up with it. I have a gigantic peace lily in and on the 75 gallon I plan to rescape today, and it's held in place by part of a roll of...

    Diapterons

I moved them yesterday. I only got 4 from the 20 eggs. This is great, as I thought I had only 3. Fry are great at hiding, and I had to strip the tank to find them. Now, I figure it'll take 2-3 months to see if I have both sexes. They've grown well so far, but they aren't in a rush.

    The Twilight Zone ?

Lone Cichlids, or pairs of female Cichlids lay unfertilized eggs all the time. If I were a real angel expert I'd be able to read what she wrote with those eggs, but it may just be a grocery list for what she wants for supper.

    Amazon disappoints

Jehmco is good - it's where I got my linear piston air pumps. Nice people. Amazon - most of what I get is good, but they had a type of coffee maker I wanted that I couldn't get locally, and it came as someone's return, and didn't work. It took two returns to get one that was new in the box and...

    Dwarf Ciclids advice

My view became that female Apistos, in general, have strong territories, into which they may allow males with strong broodcare instincts. Males have larger territories they usually defend from other males, but while they overlap, they seem unrelated to the females - you have two worlds...
