    Seachem Prime

A while back I switched from Seachem Prime to this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004LO9KSY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 I'm trying to remember why. I think I had read something about Prime being an issue in planted tanks because of it's "all singing, all dancing"...

    Cichlid markings or white spot?

Colin, could excess mucous (where water quality isn't an issue) be a delayed reaction to a fish arriving in a new home? In this case though, I believe the fish came in from the LFS about 7 to 10 days ago.

    Day 26 cycling my tank

That was probably some of the ammonia evaporating. Usually the biggest hold up is waiting for the nitrite to drop, not the ammonia to drop. I would have expected more ammonia to have evaporated by now. What test kits are you using? Are they new? One option might be getting a new ammonia...

    Day 26 cycling my tank

That's strange. So, the ammonia is consistently reading 2.0ppm? Have you been adding more ammonia, or you just dosed ammonia on day 1 and that's it?

    Fish dieing :(

Yes he is a bit partial to killifish. Good luck with your predicament. I know it can be stressful. Careful when introducing new fish to a stable/established set up. Well any set up, but especially an established one, as it can be extra heartache.

Unexplained death…. Stuff in the water most aquarist can’t test for, prior exposure/ conditions the fish were exposed to… breed issues???

That headache/b*tch part of the hobby. I know you been working hard on your set ups but I think you have ordered a fair few fish in recent times (i might have you mixed up thinking about it) and they go straight into your tanks without QT perhaps? Not sure if it applies to the tank/s with...

PLEASE HELP! I forgot to put dechlorinator into my water during a WC though my canister filter and now I'm freaking out :(

I read research (can't find it now) that beneficial bacteria are more resistant to both chloramine and chlorine than we think. The main issue with chlorine/chloramine is the fish and you got it in time. @Byron might know.

Miraculous recovery or too good to be true?

I wonder if there was an ammonia spike in the quarantine tank when the fish relieved itself? Did you hear a big bubble sound? Or was it a "silent, but violent" one as we said in school?

A few short questions about bolivian ram cichlids

It will be pot-luck down at the LFS with male/female if you get one Ram. That's my bet, for 2 reasons 1. I hope I don't go to Hell for this comment, but if some of the knowledgeable on here have trouble sexing juvenile Bolivian Rams, not sure how they will do it as the LFS :) 2. And if you...

So, a bolivian ram in a community setting?

But how about the risk/reward balance of Bolivian Rams in a 280 L community (heavily planted, quite a bit of wood and rocks). I believe the OP has a large group of Hengeli Rasbora that will be relocated into the 280 L. Possibly Corydoras as well (possibly, I believe, not sure on that). From the...

So, a bolivian ram in a community setting?

I had x2 Bolivian Rams in a 300 L (48 inch tank) years back. Fully planted. Highly stocked. Corydoras, ancistrus, glowlight tetra, neon tetra, harlequins, and a golden gourami. The Rams would joust with each other some times, but never interfered with any other fish, including the bottom...

At my wits end with my water chemistry...... Hoping to get a sanity check

That's a bummer. Good for the house, not so good for fish. I guess you need a faster RO system then, but depends on money I guess.

At my wits end with my water chemistry...... Hoping to get a sanity check

I'd get rid of that water softener gadget, unless it's been specifically designed with aquariums in mind.

Would you dare feed this to your fish???

This is interesting, because how do really know what condition frozen fish food has been in before it gets to our fish's mouths? Everyone outside the chain of producer and us will not view it anywhere near as important as human food to keep frozen, probably not even the LFS staff. I use...

    Lighting suggestions

Good point. I have never had one of these flash lights that mixes the ratio of colours. The 6500k still applies, we can see who else knows about these new lights on the market now. I am a bit old fashioned. There is an easy way, I'm sure I've seen it come up on the forum recently (what you are...

    Lighting suggestions

Try to get a colour spectrum as close to 6500k as possible. This is the best for plants, even though some lights will still be pitched as "great for plants" with much different K ratings, this is just a marketing ploy to get your £££ aim for 6500k

    64gal tank stocking

I think we have preferences in common. You are looking for a bit of character in the tank. Rams also appeal very much to me. Their slow, deliberate movements, and that's the same for the lot of cichlids. I find (from a tank behaviour) perspective it compliments the more random behaviour of fish...

    64gal tank stocking

Bolivians might make more sense in terms of a temperature match with corydoras and male Bolivians can be kept on their own. But, bear in mind, you would always been taking a risk with any cichlid and corydoras Even a single cichlid. If they get territorial they will stress the corydoras...

    Water chemistry

The German Degrees Hardness there, you will see it is 7.52, that is what we call General Hardness. What type of fish would you like to have? Your water is soft, yes. Not very soft, but soft (in terms of keeping fish), the actual water companies sometimes have different way of describing...

    Stocking and compatibility in 29gal

Hi, It's good you are going for larger groups of tetras at 12. I find it even more rewarding and better for them, if you push that to 20 (if the smaller kind) and have less different types, buts thats me. I personally would give the Odessa's a miss. If it were me, I'd rather they had more...

Any tips on supplementing the diet of newly free swimming fry, and also as they progress in the next few weeks and maybe month or two? Without increasing the bio load too much. I don't plan on moving them away from the parents anytime soon. Mum and dad are in a tank of their own. There is no...

How should I cycle my tank? I need to do it fast!

If you are not moving the mature filter media, then you could try a planted cycle in the new tank (but I am unsure if you have enough plants for that?). Others will know. Or you could quickly start a fishless cycle with Dr Tims in the new tank if you needed it cycled by Christmas. His is better...

    Lava rock filter media

I imagine the nature of all those nooks and crannies creates a nice home for the bacteria we need. Not sure nooks and crannies is a world wide term and one used in the United States of America. We use it here a lot as a part of the King's English.

    Dechlorinator and ammonia readings

Yes, and we are talking maybe 50 to 100 tap water tests over the years, as I enjoy testing water, even when I know the result will be zero. I just like testing for the sake of testing. Really I do. The only times I've had a green tinge on the ammonia tap water test for tap water, this has been...

    Lava rock filter media

Picture attached. Someone has given this to me. He never used it. But he has had it 10 years! I have space in my filter. It is worth adding? If so, shall I rinse it under tap water? The actual media is unused, but the pastic bag is open, and has been open for 10 years, does that matter?

    Dechlorinator and ammonia readings

I solved this riddle in the past, but my mind has gone blank. My water provider uses chloramine but my tap water always tests 0 for ammonia (bright yellow on the API liquid test). If I dechlorinate, say 20 litres of tap water with the API conditioner that neutralises chlorine and chloramine...
