With that many plants, you could probably just start adding fish now. How do you plan to stock the tank fish wise? I think (not 100%) the fishless cycle guide on here is based on a non planted set up. Unless there are two guides.

The healing process with mollies and all fish I guess is atleast partially dicated by the water parameters and quality. With mollies, especially black mollies, the GH (general hardness) is important. Do you know your GH levels?

I think keeping any fish apart from fry or similar size temporarily (which a betta is not) in less than 40 litres is just cruel and nasty. Feel sorry for Betta's. Get the biggest you can.

Thanks Gary. They are definitely rejecting most of the dried food from what I can see, and some fry are rejecting all the dry food. I watch carefully and they are spitting stuff out right away, moving to another bit of dry food hoping for a different result and they are doing the same thing...

Question applies to convicts, spilurus, sajica, and myrnae. The fry never seem interested in dried food until about 2 months old. Is this normal / healthy? Or am I just spoiling them? They will take a bit, but mostly spit out anything I try, including the good stuff like bug bites, oase and JBL...

There was a study, I can't find the paper now. Fish sleep better in soft water. The softer, the better apparently. Fish in harder water can be reluctant to sleep as the study showed they wake up a bit stiff.

What I like about these tanks / photos. I've always liked bristlenose catfish but don't enjoy their bickering when kept together. Do your sucker fish tolerate each other quite well?

Nitrates don't concern me unless they are constantly over 40, but if you are lucky enough to have 0-5 in your tap water you can aim for much less than 40

I'd definitely have no issues getting rid of all that sand that had root tabs in. This thing about loads of beneficial bacteria living in sand is not especially true in all my years of reading around and my personal experience.

Are you pretty sure looking back it was the root tabs causing the ammonia? I guess so, but was also wondering if a pH swing can crash a cycled tank? Not sure. You were not getting any nitrite readings despite very high ammonia. Maybe essjay will know something on that. Maybe there is nothing to...

@Essjay will know. I wonder if the Seachem product increases the KH, because with straight RO the KH is zero which makes buffer products real risky for pH swings. I don't think that happened, but worth knowing.
