Joy is having your two orange/pine-apple swordtails produce green off springs

So one of my favorite swordtails are the pure green ones that they use to sell when I was a kid. These days I find them hard to find and when i do find them can be pricey. So i ended up with two 'velvet' red swordtails that in my opinion are closer to pine apple (not using that store again); BUT...

API Master Test Kit past due .

I have a lot of wild caught blackwater fishes like discus and b. cupido, b. wavarni, chocolate and so on. While one could argue that some of them are more tolerant than others several like the discus are extremely fussy and if anything is off they throw a visible tantrum to show their displeasure.

I was trying to think of something totally random to say in this thread of random discussions but alas I can't think of anything random right now. Pity we can't say something unrandom.

    Stocking Advice

I'll let others comment on # of honey - i've read various things but prefer someone with first hand experience chime in. Do not keep dwarf cichilds with pygmy unless a single male.

    Stocking Advice

yea - something a bit smaller would work better with pygmy; not dwarf gourami unless you can find wild caught ones but there are plenty of alternatives. Maybe honey gourami ?

    Stocking Advice

There won't be extra ammonia per say if the tank is truly cycled - though you should probably test it daily the first week and have some prime (or api equiv) nearby to neutral ammonia if it occurs. I don't see the tank size and water volume will play a role here. I'm not sure i would keep...

API Master Test Kit past due .

I have one - to be honest the only tests i use are ammonia when setting up a new aquarium to make sure it doesn't creep up; and nitrate which i test on my 500 and 600 once every 5 to 6 months again to make sure it is being contained and not creeping up. I find the rest of the tests pretty...

🐡 FOTM VOTE NOW - October 2024 Fish of the Month Contest(Tetras)

blue keri tetra: This is a blue keri somewhere between 4 and 6 years old. He inhabits a 29 with some ember tetra, eques cory and a very mean male hybrid a. cf ortegai. They are actually very nice looking fishes but sometimes they are a bit moody; like all of us.

    Breeding Nerita Semiconic snails

They are likely not nerite snails; what you are describing is the breeding behavior of mystery snails (small version of apple snail) where they lay large egg sacks out of the water. They have to stay moist but can't become submersed until the baby hatch (they actually breath air and will go to...

Can guppies and swordtails survive in 'blackwater' ?

read the bloody thread. I posted a question; got an answer; transitioned the tank and gave the results. You jumped in at the very end AFTER the results were given.

Can guppies and swordtails survive in 'blackwater' ?

I have no clue what you are talking about. I never stated the target gh. I merely gave the starting point. The EC is now below 30.

Does it matter if I see my guppies poo?

If we were to go the route of Romans and by extension Greeks we could talk about social issues they resolved that we are now unable to handle. If only they had known to build their pipes out of ceramics instead of lead.... who knows how things would have turned out.

Can guppies and swordtails survive in 'blackwater' ?

Well i wouldn't have phrase it like you did; after all i have this 40b; it is being repurpose for a fish that requires blackwater and the question is would the guppies have much of a chance if i left them in. The suggestion is they would so i dind't make an attempt to remove them and the...

Which Cory Catfish like cooler waters???

The greens are more expensive but no where close to $50; the orange can be found for a *lot* less; vaguely i think i paid around $8 each.

These are over-priced but Dan does have 5 for a small school: https://dansfish.com/product.detail/6812/CW111-Vulcan-Cory-(Hoplisoma-sp.) worse they are tank raised and not wc.

Can guppies and swordtails survive in 'blackwater' ?

Can guppies and swordtails survive in 'blackwater' ?

I would for sure say the ones i had were genetically weak - very weak with high turn over even before moving to blackwater. I'm not particularly sad to be rid of them - i do wish they had a better ending but it is what it is. I would not object if the swordtails passed because it would save me a...

Which Cory Catfish like cooler waters???

While they might be too small for you - i think you are missing what makes these guys unique - it isn't just about looks but how they school. They are one of the few species of cory that actually will form a school when traveling around the tank - of course - like tetra - the schooling behavior...

Which Cory Catfish like cooler waters???

You can get wild caught cory eques (I have 8) for less than $70 - i think i paid $20 a shot. Unfortunately the seller shutdown a month ago because he went back to school. However if you look around you can find them in the $20-$35 range and tank raised ones for less. -- I just checked wetspot...

Which Cory Catfish like cooler waters???

Personally in a nice cool aquarium i would go for panda cory - not domestic of course - but wild caught. Of course the minute we talk about long fins - we aren't really talking about natural fishes but slectivly abuse - er farm bred - fishes for a particular trait; though having said that there...

Can guppies and swordtails survive in 'blackwater' ?

I'm not going to argue you but rather report my findings. Also i don't care about all species of live bearers just domestic guppies and swordtails. 'Larged fin' is of course relative they were not super fancy guppies with overflowing large fins. Many had reverted to more colourless form with...

Need feedback on this 120-gallon tank

Yes they are one of my favorite dwarf cichild; the one i had for 4 years was extremely adaptive and show a great deal of intelligence learning to deal with new situations - sadly it died and i haven't found a good quality replacement. The one i had was a hobby bred fish that had been dropped...

    Do fishes really live long?

Dwarf cichild can live 3 to 5 years; but no they will not live forever. Cory can live 10 or 15 years but it is not common; though i admit my group is only living about 5 years. However over stocking or 'bad' water and 9 months isn't uncommon. Over-feeding and over-stocking are probably leading...

Yep nice soft acidic water; the common name for them is golden eye and i'm very familiar with them having kept them for around 5 years.
