Courage. That one kid who is scared half to death, but does her solo anyway. Then immediately volunteers to do another one. Sometimes, I have a pretty cool job.🎸

    What are you doing today?

I'm starting to pack up for the weekend's elk hunt.

    What are you doing today?

Sometimes you do things right and fish just die. It's a bummer.

    What are you doing today?

I always enjoy running in the rain, as long as the trail doesn't get too sloppy.

    What are you doing today?

Well. I just got an email from a friend that I haven't heard from in 15+ years. We used to play Irish music together way back in the day before I settled down and started the Badger clan. It turns out she has taken over the whistle-making business from another friend, an elderly gent named...

I just read a news article in which the author used "prolific" where he meant "proficient." There is no reason for a professional writer to make a mistake like that, especially in the era of google. But it was interesting to find out that the F-35 is prolific at air-to-ground missions...

    What are you doing today?

We had R/O at our former place for around five years, and I don't think we ever once changed the membrane. I guess we got lucky. I slept rather poorly last night--a lot on my mind--but I'm up drinking tea and getting my head on straight for a day of teaching little kids about music.

    Help me choose rasboras

Oh, I mean appearance. Just my opinion; get the purples if they make you happy. :) I'm sure their behavior is about the same.

    Help me choose rasboras

I'd knock S. resplendens off the list, since they need hard water (I'm assuming, based on your other fish, that yours is fairly soft). Out of the ones you listed, I'd go with harlequins. They're peaceful but not shy if you get a decent sized group (8 or more; 15 is better). Mine always hung...

Interesting, insightful comments. I disagree about loaches, but otherwise I'm mostly with you. I would add that SA cichlids are predators in nature, so it makes sense that you'd like them so much. Predators do tend to be more intelligent and interactive with their surroundings, including...

    Best shrimp for betta?

I agree with Adora about live foods. Our Bettas go absolutely nuts for daphnia, brine shrimp, copepods, or any other live food we give them.

    Best shrimp for betta?

Nice looking tank! I've kept amano shrimp with bettas with good results. But Bettas have widely varying personalities, and yours seems unusually aggressive. I'd just keep her alone. She'll be happier, I suspect.

The man who wrote the Hokey Pokey died recently. Very sad, especially for the funeral director, who struggled to get his body into the coffin. They put his right foot in...

Is golden algae eater just an algae eating fish or a literal tank cleaner?

My Siamese algae eaters never ate algae either, once they figured out that fish food was less work.

    Panda corys

Panda cories are said to be delicate, but they are one of the only species I've ever had any luck with. (the other was Brochis splendens) I had a decent sized group, and they were always out and about. Really pretty fish.

Is golden algae eater just an algae eating fish or a literal tank cleaner?

Sorry for your losses. Rule #1 in this hobby is never take a pet store employee's advice too seriously until you've done your own research. Most of us had to learn that one the hard way, so welcome to the club. I suspect Gary's right, that you have a Chinese algae eater. (And yes, it would...

    What are you doing today?

A big stick works pretty well. But usually if they're content to leave me alone, I'm content to return the favor. I only kill them if I need a snakeskin for something, but I am amply supplied at the moment. So it was his lucky day. Or maybe mine.

Bucket List Hillstream in stock at one of the suppliers I buy from... now if they are there for another week, so I can buy a couple...

I think the varying information can be attributed to the fact that many of these hillstreams go through wild, seasonal fluctuations, and the fish that live in them have to be very adaptable toward temperature, hardness, movement, and pH. (I'm looking at you, panda garra) Plus many of them are...

    Sparkling Gourami, makes surprise visit

Sparkling gouramis are very social and do best in a group. Having only one, you're missing the fun of listening to them talk things over. They are also very slow, selective micropredators, rather slow moving, and easily intimidated by bigger, more active tank mates...and just about everybody...

stocking ideas for a 10-15 gallon betta tank?

The trouble with jerdonis is that they prefer their water quite a bit cooler than bettas. In my experience they don't live very long at betta temps. Bettas really seem to live longer and thrive better if they are alone. They just don't like company. They can do OK with relatively lethargic...

    10g Badis and Firefrog Palace

I saw both badis last night, so that's good news. I keep hoping some fry will turn up, but I suspect I have two males. Still no sign of the second frog, and the first continues to look nice but act very lethargic.

    What are you doing today?

I came across this rather handsome fellow while out on a trail run last night. It was lying in the trail quite lethargically, attempting to find some warmth after a long thunderstorm. He ignored me, and I left him alone.

Java Moss - detrius, excess food trap

I agree about microfauna, but that's tough to maintain in a tank with angelfish, rosy tetras, and farlowella. Whenever I put frozen or live anything in there, it's like piranhas on a dead cow...

Java Moss - detrius, excess food trap

I actually have a bigger problem with java ferns. The root tangles get huge, and any time they are disturbed they release an enormous amount of crud into the water. If I'm going to trim them (or moss), I try to do it right before or during a big water change. And then I clean the filter...

    Maintenance

Do about a 50% water change once a week, using your siphon to suck any gunk off the gravel, and take the rock out and scrub it clean if you don't like the way it looks. Colin is right; most of the beneficial bacteria lives in your filter or down in your gravel, and you won't hurt it by cleaning...

    Walstad aquarium help

Walstad tanks are wonderful if you do them right. My first advice would be to get Diane Walstad's book, Ecology and the Planted Aquarium, and read it carefully. She is a microbiologist by training, and if you find the book interesting, you might be nerdy enough to follow her method. :lol...

    10g Badis and Firefrog Palace

Well, I just did a big water change, and I am definitely down to one frog and probably one badis. The frog is bright-eyed and colored up very well, but not as active as it once was. It will snap up a fly here and there, but isn't going after them enthusiastically. I sure wish I knew what I...

    What are you doing today?

I've had several aquariums with no purpose-built filter, but lots of plants, hardscape, and water circulation. If it's done right, the plants and bacteria on surfaces serve as biological filtration. I don't know how that works with live rock in saltwater. But it can work in fresh if you have...
