    What are you doing today?

Finished flooring the upstairs bath and hallway, and the Badgerling's room. All that remains is our bedroom, which shouldn't be too hard as it's just a big square with only one bumpout. The bathroom was awful--the bumpouts have bumpouts, the toilet wasn't properly installed which caused extra...

    Pond questions

Your story sounds like something my friends in California would tell. Stuff like that always makes me sad. We have our share of stupid rules and fussy bureaucrats out here in the west, but overall I think the nannies tend to rise to the surface of states with immense numbers of people. In...

    Pond questions

Nice looking goldfish! I was just looking at New York's baitfish regulations. They're a bit confusing, and I would call the game and fish and ask to talk to a fisheries biologist before I did anything, but the "green list" in the regs contains many species that would be interesting, beautiful...

🐠 TOTM VOTE NOW - June 2024 Tank of the Month Contest (16 gal & smaller)

Alright, I'll play. Welcome to my 10 gallon Nano Paludarium. Setup: Walstad-style; no filter, no heater, no ferts except what the fish and their food provide. Black sand over play sand. Floating island made from blue insulation foam coated with Drylok and concrete pigment. The toothpicks...

Fun Facts We Didn't Need To Know

I'm not against leaving hoofed game at medium rare, but bear meat is basically pork, as far as the potential for parasites and such. Likewise any critter of the rabbit-hare clan. Always cook to well-done.

    Cleaning substrate

That is true, unless you have plants. Plant roots oxygenate those anaerobic areas and keep them from becoming toxic.

    Cleaning substrate

I just suck the mulm off the surface when it starts to look ugly. I figure whatever gets down into the sand, the plants can take care of. My tanks constantly register <5 ppm nitrate and only have parasite problems when I fail to quarantine new fish, so I guess it's working.

I believe @Slaphppy7 is still moderating. Haven't seen him around for a while, though, now that you mention it.

Goldie!!! Good to hear from you again! Looking forward to seeing your tank develop.

Also, just ordered some mosses from some guy named @connorlindeman who seems to think he's a big kahuna.

    Slimmed Down Fish Room Journal

Wow, that pleco/panaque/whatever it is creeps me out. Looks like a job for @CaptainBarnicles . Other than that, though, beautiful. I don't envy you trying to catch eels in that stuff, though. I pretty much have to drain my tanks to catch anything in them.

    Snails under gravel

My guess is that they'll find their way out. Most snails roll with the punches pretty well, and nerites are no exception.

    55g Himalayan Foothills Paludarium

I asked the pet store manager what she's feeding them. The breeder I bought my original ones from feeds fruit flies until they're large enough to eat crickets and wax worms.

Fun Facts We Didn't Need To Know

My first thought was "Only four??? They need a bigger group than that! I wonder what their water parameters are..." I never really thought of "gravity" as a water parameter.

    55g Himalayan Foothills Paludarium

Yeah, they're pretty healthy. It's interesting--the ones still at the pet store are bigger. Makes me wonder if I'm not feeding mine enough. But yeah, once they've doubled in size or so I'll put them in the 55. At least, that's the current plan. Check out the Badis-firefrog palace thread for...

One of my hill stream loaches up and died this morning. :( Other than that all is well! I'll try to get a new vid this week.

    What are you doing today?

I've loved the looks of M. ctenopoma since I saw them in the Aquarium Atlas. Never tried them though. A West African semi-biotope is on the "someday" list.

Fun Facts We Didn't Need To Know

Also, a lot of what we call "instinct" is simply learning that has been internalized. Same with "gut feeling." The style of archery I use, for example, is called "instinctive shooting," because it isn't a system of conscious aiming down the arrow or using sights. But it requires lots and...

Man, I hate to hear that about your clarinet. Most of my instruments have names, they almost become living things to me. We can only hope that it's making some lucky person very happy. Why don't I like it? Just don't care for the sound of it all that much, and never could play the dang thing...

I've just never gotten along with the clarinet, listening or playing. The exception is jazz. I can listen to Benny Goodman all day. People either love highland pipes or hate them. I'm firmly in the former camp. If you want some good recordings, I can make some recommendations.

Just saw this for some reason. Thanks for sharing these. Greensleeves was one of the very first tunes I learned to play on the whistle a hundred or so years ago. Nice. Here's my favorite version of Amazing Grace. Never fails to bring a chill to my spine and a tear to my eye.

Fun Facts We Didn't Need To Know

Yeah, I tend to think that our instincts are a mixture of nature and nurture. We are predisposed to certain behaviors genetically. Our upbringing gives us our concept of what's normal, and society and environment further shape what we will do in a given situation. But we can also choose to go...

    Virtual friends

We largely have our mod crew to thank for that. People that are stuck in their ways tend to get belligerent, and eventually they get shown the door. We don't see it a lot, but the mods work hard. That's why I retired. You've obviously never tried to run a kindergarten music...

    Juniper/sinew kid's bow

I'm still waiting for another garter snake (actually just the skin of one) to finish this bow and gift it to my little buddy. In the meantime, I made some arrows out of phragmite reeds from down at the creek, fletched with some flicker wing feathers we found, tipped with bamboo skewers, and...

Best picture I've been able to get of a frog belly. They won't hold when they're in the water, and they don't show their bellies on land. Despite the light and the blurring, hopefully you can see the definite orange cast starting to develop. Made a new lid out of stainless mesh, a couple...

Fun Facts We Didn't Need To Know

I don't think any animals, even dolphins, are anywhere as "smart" as humans when it comes to things like problem solving, number sense, or language--the sorts of things by which we humans tend to measure intelligence. But animals are very smart in their own way. Elk, a relatively unintelligent...

    What are you doing today?

I had to come home sick today. I've had a bad headache since I woke up at five. Usually I can tough it out until these headaches go away; I get with the kids and start having fun and next thing I'm feeling better. But not today. About ten minutes into my second class...It's kind of hard to...

    New Tank Joy/Relief!

That looks really nice! I hope you have a plan for all the platy fry. It's a rather nice problem to have. :) I'm not usually a fan of store-bought, un-natural looking decor, but your hardscape and plants really work well together. Well done!
