My beautiful blood parrot is so pale

Does it normally swim with its head facing downwards? Does it float up when it stops swimming? Have you seen it poop and if yes, what did it look like? What is the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH of the water (in numbers)? How often do you do water changes and how much do you change? Do you...

    Inbreeding?

Yes, you should be concerned about inbreeding. Unless the fish were wild caught there's a very good chance they were related to begin with. And even if they are wild caught there's a small chance they are related. That doesn't mean it's good to keep breeding related fish. Ideally you want to mix...

    Snails, snails and more snails!

They come in on plants and are a small species so a few little ones in the tank can easily hide in the plants and you don't notice them until months later when they have bred a few times. If you don't want them or have too many, squash them.

Sorry to hear about the ducks :( I could never work the piano. I can play the white keys but using the black keys and pedals at the same time was too hard. Queensland is expensive to live and currently has a housing shortage. The entire country has a housing shortage currently and Queensland...

    White spot on discus

It's not really dangerous to the parents unless you have a huge number of young and small parents. Let the parents look after them but try and add some other food for the fry because some should survive.

Do some fish ( gouramis ) get belligerent, as they age???

The kissing part reminds me of Miss Piggy off the Muppet Show when she was chasing Kermit. Kissy Kissy Kissy :)

Question about WC on a snail only tank

Big water change once every few weeks to keep everything clean and to replace lost minerals from the water. The plants like the new water as do the snails. The water change should also slow or stop the pH dropping and dissolving the snail's shells.

    Plants Habitats

Barry has popped in for his annual visit :) Long time no see, how are you, doing well I hope? Your pictures are still good. How is your study going, any Fs yet? :) How is the plant business? Have you still got ducks or did the dogs finish them all off? How is your family, doing well I hope. :)

    Unexpected Zebra danio fry

Don't put it in with mozzie larvae or they will eat him. Move some green water into the fry's container.

Do some fish ( gouramis ) get belligerent, as they age???

The kissing part is territorial aggression. Although my aunt chased me around the house when I was about 8 and she had her false teeth half out of her mouth going "give us a kiss love". It was horrible and I ran to my room and fell down some stairs and broke most of my toes. I stayed in my room...

    White spot on discus

Male and female discus both produce excess mucous for the babies to feed off. The fry will feed off one parent and when that fish has had enough they swim over to their partner and shake. The babies then swap parents and feed off the other one. You can start offering newly hatched brineshrimp...

    Unexpected Zebra danio fry

If you use salt to treat parasites you normally do it for 2 weeks and then stop. You don't need to keep adding it and the fish will be fine when you dilute it out. If you have a container of green water, that will make a great food for the baby fish. You want the water that the fish is in to be...

Do some fish ( gouramis ) get belligerent, as they age???

Kissing gouramis can reach 10 inches maybe a little more. As mentioned by anewbie, the males get grumpier as they get older. This is the same for most gouramis and the bigger and older the male, generally the worse they are. However, kissing gouramis aren't as bad as many of the smaller ones...

    White spot on discus

It doesn't look like a disease but more a small bump covered in excess mucous. This could be caused by the babies. When discus breed they start to produce more mucous over their body for the babies to feed off. If there are any unusual lumps or bumps they will appear more noticeable and cream or...

    Unexpected Zebra danio fry

Ideally you want the temperature over 22C (between 22-26C), however, if the fish was born in cool water and it is only a day or so old, it will be fine in 20C water. -------------------- Why are you adding salt to the pond? Salt (sodium chloride) should only be used to treat freshwater fish...

I cant get a break nor can my fish 😥

Nine years old is a pretty good age for a cichlid, especially a smaller variety like convict. Most get killed the first time they try to breed but a number make it to 4 or 5 years old, some live longer and nine years is pretty good. You can keep treating if you like but it gets to a point if...

LOL in so many ways :) I know I shouldn't be laughing but that is so funny and it's all true. You get good customers and sometimes bad ones. Most of the time they are good, at least the ones that came into the shops I worked at. Clown Loach Lady We had a customer buy two small clown loaches...

Does Daphnia pose a threat to minuscule fry?

Daphnia shouldn't eat baby fish but they will compete for the same food source (algae and infusoria). You can add liquid fry foods, and increase the light to encourage the water to turn green.

The best way to soften water?

Use a water pump and length of hose, or move the aquarium into the basement. Maybe use a pully system. If you have kids, lots of buckets and a whip :) Only kidding on the whip part but use a bucket brigade. Good exercise walking up and down stairs with 5 gallons of water. :) Reverse osmosis...

Who gets stress bars male or female discus fish?

How are you sexing them? To my knowledge the only way to sex discus is when they are breeding and you look at the ovipositor (egg laying tube). Males have a longer thin ovipositor and females have a shorter wider one. If you do have a lot of males they might be bickering among themselves but I...

Help with dwarf gourami killing my other fish

Do not add any new fish until you find out why they are dying. If your fish have a disease (dwarf gouramis, guppies and neon tetras are regularly infested with diseases), you could be adding new fish to a sick tank. Even if the fish aren't sick, adding new fish can introduce diseases that make...

I cant get a break nor can my fish 😥

People are probably going to chuck a sad at me about this but they would get eaten in the wild. If the fish are really old and not responding to treatment, it's either because their immune system is failing due to age or other health issues, or they have a drug resistant bacterial infection...

What species is this cory ?

Maybe Corydoras rabauti but the pink on the side could mean a man made glo cory. The fins are clamped and it looks like it is covered in excess mucous. Check the water quality and maybe do a gravel clean and big water change.

Who gets stress bars male or female discus fish?

Any fish that is stressed, in breeding condition, or is showing nocturnal colours will have the dark bars on the body. Sex has nothing to do with it. Make sure the water and tank are clean. Monitor and make sure nobody is being picked on. Make they are all eating well.

    Too many frys :(

Cichlid fry should be left with their parents until they are no longer being cared for by the adults (they are around 1 month old at that stage). Then you move the fry into a rearing tank to grow. Moving fry too early stops them learning fish language and parental care.

    Neon tetra swimming weird

You should test the water just before doing a water change so you know how bad it is. testing after the water change will give lower test results because you have diluted out harmful substances with the water change. Fish with swim bladder problems can hold on for months but they lose condition...

    Concern about seam

If it has been the same since you got it then it's probably fine. Monitor it anyway but it should be ok. If it gets worse then you either need a new tank or you take that pain of glass off, remove the old silicon and reglue it. Good silicon is firm but slightly squishy and should be clear with...

    Algae???

The green liquid will be algae growing in the sand and is caused by light penetrating the sand. It looks like the tank is on a marble countertop and that shouldn't let light in from underneath the aquarium. This would suggest you have very bright light above the aquarium or it's in a really...

    Neon tetra swimming weird

Swim bladder problem, euthanise the fish. Swim bladder problems occur in two forms. 1) The fish floats up whenever it stops swimming. This can be caused by a damaged swim bladder or more often by air trapped in the fish's intestine. To find out which one it is you simply stop feeding the fish...

    Old Mechanical HOB filter

I had something similar with the air blowing bubbles that pushed water into the HOB part of the filter. The water flowed through a couple of chambers that had sponge in and then overflowed back into the tank. It was green and similar in colour to the tubing in the picture above. It worked ok but...

The best way to soften water?

There are three ways to reduce hardness in water: diluting the current water with rain water, reverse osmosis (r/o) water or distillation. Rain water is great if you get clean rain or any rain but it's usually seasonal and can't always be relied on to be there when you need it. So you have to...

You could try doing some work experience at a pet shop for a month. See how they run on a day to day basis. A lot of people think a pet shop is just handling fluffy bunnies and serving customers but it isn't. We hardly ever handled the animals except when cleaning cages or showing the animals to...
