    Cheap Tanks??

Bite the bullet and get a new aquarium so you don't have to worry about the secondhand one leaking or having some awful disease in that affects your fish. If you do get secondhand, check the silicon (glue holding the glass together) and make sure it's not cream or white and doesn't have any...

There's a red splotch on shrimp. I'm worried.

Parasites would be a parasitic worm that got lost in the shrimp. Sometimes worm eggs from sheep, cattle, pigs or birds end up in waterways where the fish or shrimp eat them. The egg hatches and the worm larvae wanders around and gets lost because it's not meant to be in a fish or shrimp. The...

GH and KH, do I need to worry......

What fish do you keep? They will determine what the GH, KH and pH should be. A GH of 180ppm gives you a lot of choice including groups 1 and 2 below. 1) Angelfish, discus, most tetras, most barbs, Bettas, gouramis, rasbora, Corydoras and small species of suckermouth catfish all occur in soft...

There's a red splotch on shrimp. I'm worried.

It could be food in the digestive tract or a parasitic worm. How long has it been like that? How long have you had that shrimp? If you have had the shrimp for a few months it's probably just food.

Plants not doing very, could do with some advice

That just sounds like normal algae (not blue green) so that's a plus. :)

    Help-tank not cycling

Interesting, you use distilled water but the GH is 150ppm. This would suggest there is something in the tank increasing the hardness or the distilled water is not distilled. The pH of 7.2, and the GH (150ppm) and KH (80ppm) are fine for goldfish. :)

    Fin rot?

There's a bit of red and white (blood and excess mucous) on the edge of the top half of the tail. The big chunk missing from the lower half looks like a bite or the tail has been caught on something and ripped.

    POLAR PARROT FRY

Leave the babies with the parents until the babies no longer go back to them at night. This will be in about a month. The angelfish might try to eat the babies, which won't be bad because there could be several hundred babies and you won't be able to sell them all. Most shops only take 10-20 at...

    Algae and Light

Pictures of the algae? Purple and brown algae could be blue green algae (Cyanobacteria), which loves nutrients, low oxygen levels, red light and calm water.
  10. Colin_T

    Cloudy tank

Milky cloudy water is a bacterial bloom. Green cloudy is an algal bloom. Do a big (75%) water change and wipe the inside of the glass and it should clear up in a few days.

Plants not doing very, could do with some advice

Can you post a picture of the algae that grows on the glass? Is it light green or dark green? Does it wipe off in a film? Does it smell musty? If it wipes off in a film and smells musty/ mouldy, then it's blue green algae (Cyanobacteria) and is from excess nutrients. -------------------- A...

Plants not doing very, could do with some advice

Reduce the lighting period to 12 hours per day. The Vallis with rough edges could be bites from the goldfish and doesn't look like a disease.

Molly fish tail fin looks odd.

It's excess mucous produced by the fish because something in the water is irritating it. Check the water quality for pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Do a 75% water change and gravel clean the substrate every day for a week. Make sure any new water is free of chlorine/ chloramine before it's...

    Fin rot?

Make sure nobody is biting the fins. Keep the water clean by doing big (75%) regular water changes and gravel cleaning the substrate. Maybe increase the concentration of salt, (see dose rates below). -------------------- SALT You can add rock salt (often sold as aquarium salt), swimming...

Are there light colors that stress fish

Do not use one particular colour for long periods on its own unless its white. Other colours on their own (blue, red, yellow or green) are not natural and will stress fish. In the morning you can have low levels of yellow on for 30 minutes before adding red and other colours but don't leave...

Ok, just how crazy is this???

DO NOT feed discus on mammal meat foods. They are mainly vegetarian and at least half of their diet should be plant based. See the link below for what discus eat in the wild. https://m.moam.info/the-discus-fish-symphysodon-scielo_59c411371723ddc7f4532afc.html Jack Wattley got it wrong and his...

    Abramite-safe plants?

The fish are primarily vegetarian and will eat any plants in the aquarium. You can reduce the damage to the plants by feeding vegetable flakes and pellets, along with fruit and vegetables like pumpkin, zucchini, peas, etc. Just make sure they are free of chemicals. You can also grow plants...

Not an emergency, just maybe the best place to post…

Gill flukes is the most common cause of rapid breathing in fish that are acting and eating normally. use Praziquantel or Flubendazole to treat gill flukes. Praziquantel also treats tapeworm, while Flubendazole treats flat and round worms as well as the gill flukes. You need to treat all your...

    Betta Fish poop?

Get a basic model gravel cleaner like the one in the following link. then use it each time you do a water change on the tank. You should try to do a partial water change once a week and I recommend a 50-75% water change each week. The gravel cleaner can be bought at any pet shop or online. You...

Fish recommendation for 40 liters aquarium

What are the tank dimensions (length x width x height)? Which part of the water hardness is the 50FR for? What is 50FR in ppm? Ideally we would like the carbonate hardness (KH), general hardness (GH) and the pH of the water.

The importers in Australia wouldn't even know about most of those fish you just got, let alone import them. It's a sad place I live in when members of the forum get better fish than we can get in this country. I don't think anyone in Australia has ever imported a wild guppy from anywhere...

    Help-tank not cycling

Why are you using distilled water? Distilled water is pure water that contains no minerals and if there's no carbonate hardness (KH) in the water, the beneficial filter bacteria won't do as well. Carbonate hardness also buffers the pH and stops it dropping. You also want minerals for goldfish...

    Has anyone kept spiny eels?

It depends on what fish are in the community. They are peaceful but you rarely see them and they can starve if they don't get enough food to eat.
  28. Colin_T

    Has anyone kept spiny eels?

They don't come out during the day unless there is food in the tank. They need lots of hiding places and sand on the bottom. They will bury into gravel but sand is much better for them. Be careful if you gravel clean the substrate because you can cut them with the gravel cleaner if you push it...

    Is my tank overstocked?

Is the filter pad stopping the water flow after 2 days? It shouldn't block up in 2 days. A small amount of brown gunk on the outside is normal. If the blue and yellow sponges get dirty in a few days then you are definitely overfeeding. But that filter pad should be fine for at least a few weeks...

What is it about a Comet Goldfish, that says “eat me” ???

If you want feeder fish, breed and grow your own. It is much safer for the fish you are giving them too due to fewer diseases, and if you have a variety of feeder fishes and shrimp, the fish eating them is less likely to get nutritional problems. There is something goldfish and carp (pretty...

    Help identify mystery fish?

If the pond was dry a week ago it's not from an egg. The fish in the net is at least one month old and probably closer to two months. Root tabs or aqua soil?

Most aquatic plants take their nutrients from the water so root feeding isn't necessary for the majority of them.
