    Strange disease on clown killifish

Metronidazole only treats internal protozoan infections. Unless the fish are doing stringy white poop and not eating much, there is no need to use Metronidazole. External protozoan infections appear as small white dots like grains of salt on the body and fins (Ich or white spot disease); a...

    where to get esha ndx

If you use API General Cure once a week for 3 weeks to treat tapeworm (it doesn't treat threadworms like Camallanus), you risk creating bacteria that are resistant to Metronidazole (drug resistant bacteria). Praziquantel will not treat Camallanus. You need Levamisole or Flubendazole to kill the...

    Strange disease on clown killifish

I doubt it's TB due to the fact killifish are normally kept in cooler water (low 20s Celsius) and only live 1-2 years. They wouldn't live long enough to die from TB even if they do contract it. Most killifish are also kept in single species tanks and don't come from Asian fish farms where...

    Strange disease on clown killifish

Fish that stop eating normally and pick at little bits of food but not a lot, and do a stringy white poop, then die a couple of weeks later usually have an internal protozoan infection. Metronidazole is the medication of choice. You add it to the tank and let the fish absorb it into their body...

    Red spot on rainbow fish.

@CassCats, you must have had different M. boesemani to what we have in Australia because I have never seen them get to 6 inches here, let alone bigger and I had them for 20 years. The only time I have seen big M. boesemani was in a photograph from Germany back in the late 1990s, which was hard...

    Fin rot salt treatment procedure

Fin rot is normally caused by poor water quality. If there is no ammonia or nitrite and less than 20ppm nitrate, then a weekly water change is usually sufficient when using salt. Before you add salt, do a complete gravel clean and clean the filter. You should also wipe down the inside of the...

    where to get esha ndx

API General cure has Metronidazole and Praziquantel in. Metronidazole is an antibiotic and should not be used unless the fish have an internal protozoan or bacterial infection. Praziquantel treats tapeworm and does not do anything to thread/ round worms like Camallanus or Capillaria. You need...

Video of the fish and surface turbulence created by the filters? Upload video to YouTube, then copy & paste the link here. If you use a mobile phone to film the fish, hold the phone in landscape mode so the footage fills the entire screen. Have you done anything to the tank in the last 24 hours?

    Red spot on rainbow fish.

Most Melanotaenia boesemani only reach 3-4 inches long. If you keep them in a 20 foot tank that is 4 feet high and live in Germany, they might hit 6-7 inches (but that was 20 yrs ago) but nowhere else in the world has seen them get that big. Minimum size tank for them is 3 foot long and 4 foot...

Are Festivum‘s as weirdly freaky as angels

What do you mean by stable / unstable? They aren't inbred like angelfish so are generally healthier and have fewer deformities. Temperament wise they are similar to angelfish.

    Fantail Goldfish Tails

You can grow aquarium plants in pots so they don't need to be planted in the aquarium substrate. Just use 1 or 2 litre plastic icecream containers. Put some gravel and plant fertiliser in them and plant the plants in that. Then you just move the pot with plants into their tank for a week before...

How to tell how old your fish is???

Captive and wild caught fishes can be adult size in a few months depending on the species, how much food it gets and how much room it has to grow. I have seen 6 month old rainbowfish that were an inch long and I have had 3 month old rainbowfish that were 3 inches long and breeding. Unfortunately...

    20 Gallon Long Tank Stocking?

Neither danios nor ghost shrimp are messy. Danios need cool water (15-16C) over winter, and try to keep them cool in summer so they don't age as fast. An unheated tank is usually fine for them and ghost shrimp.

    10 gallon stock ideas

If you like it, keep it. Just do a big water change and gravel clean the substrate every week to keep the tank clean. Or get a bigger tank (as mentioned above). Your pleco will probably be active after the lights go out. You can put some food in 30 minutes after lights out and see if it eats...

    Fantail Goldfish Tails

How long has the dark red patches been on the tail? Do they appear to be getting bigger? As mentioned by the others, do a big water change each week (minimum 50%). I would keep the pebbles out but add some gravel or sand so there is something on the bottom of the tank. Are you adding level or...

    Is this enough light?

The light unit in the link has a lot of blue light and looks more like a marine light. They can still be used but you want red and blue light in equal amounts for the plants.

    emersed to submereged

What plants are we talking about? Most true aquatic and marsh plants can shed their old terrestrial leaves and grow new aquatic leaves when put into an aquarium. A bit of aquarium plant fertiliser and some light will definitely help them along. They don't need supplemental carbon dioxide (CO2).

    Cherry Barb struggling

Stop feeding the fish dry food for a week and only feed live or frozen foods during that time. If the fish continues to float up when it stops swimming after a week without dry food, then it has a swim bladder problem and there's no cure, so euthanise it. If the fish swims normally and doesn't...

    White floss in fluval filters

I used to photograph fish and never used anything to polish the water. I wipe the inside of the glass down and do a big water change and gravel clean the day before I take pictures. Run a squeegee over the outside of the glass and that's all you need to do.

Help! False Julii Cory has scratches

Some fish sleep on their side, some on their back, some upside down. It might be just how that fish likes to sleep now. As long as it's eating well and doing normal coloured poop, it shouldn't be an issue, especially if the fish is only doing it when resting.

    Fish died overnight. Need help!

Don't add Melxafix or anything else. Slime coat is the clear mucous on fish. All fish have a thin layer of clear mucous (slime) over their body and fins. It helps them move through the water easier and offers a first line of defense against external parasites and chemicals or harmful...

    Fish died overnight. Need help!

Stop adding fish to the tank. Never add new fish if a fish has just died. Wait at least a month after everyone has been good. The white stuff on the fish is excess mucous produced by the fish because something in the water is irritating it. The red stuff is probably blood and could be from a...
