    Breeding issue

Day and night for a few months until the breeding season is over. Fish can see in much lower light than humans and what we see as dark, fish say, we can see quite well. And first thing in the morning is when the fish are most likely to breed (just after sunrise) so ideally if you don't want...

    Cory’s randomly dying

Any chance you can answer the questions in the bottom half of post #3? Reposted below :) Have you added anything to the tank in the 2 weeks before this started? What symptoms do the fish have (if any)? How often do you do water changes and how much do you change? Do you gravel clean the...

    My newest discus

I doubt regular water changes would cause it unless the new water was contaminated by something. The problem with discus is most people feed them a meat based diet and that doesn't agree with them. And meat foods cause water quality issues much faster than plant based or dry foods, and the meat...

    Cory’s randomly dying

Basic First Aid For Fish Test the water for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. Post the results in numbers here. Wipe the inside of the glass down with a clean fish sponge. This removes the biofilm on the glass and the biofilm will contain lots of harmful bacteria, fungus, protozoans and various...

did you swear at the moderators, coz they get stroppy if you do and also if you question their reason for telling you off. like balls, hey guys, balls, the guy got kicked in the balls. that's what i got banned for last time. apparently it's not an acceptable word and I should have used nuts.

    Black worms question

You don't want to use live bloodworms (Chironomid midge larvae) because they can damage the fish's stomach if the fish swallows them whole. If the fish chews them up first it's not an issue but fish that swallow their food can die from swallowing live ones.

The bacteria could be affecting his brain or just irritating him in general and he's trying to shake it off. If he dies, flush the tank and everything out. Basically take the filter and heater out and wash them under tap water. Then gravel clean and drain the tank. Then either empty the gravel...

    Fantail Goldfish Tails

Try the esha 2000, it should be stronger than the Myxazin, but that's only going off the ingredients. I haven't used esha 2000 so can't say 100%. Do a water change before treating if it's going to be a day or two before you get the medication, but don't leave it too long. The longer it takes to...

Betta losing the scales on his back

If it's a burn then it shouldn't spread. If it's bacterial it will usually spread quickly (within a few days). It doesn't appear to be protozoan and isn't fungal.

Pleco has red streak on fin?

Red lines in the fins is an issue but I don't see that on the fish in the pictures. The pinkish skin colour is fine for albino fish as long as it's all over the fish. If the fish had a pink patch on one side that would be an issue (maybe a bacterial infection). Tannins don't cause problems to...

Betta losing the scales on his back

It is worse now. This would suggest a bacterial infection and a broad spectrum medication or something that treats bacteria is probably the best course of action. In the UK antibiotics aren't going to be available so a medication like Waterlife Myxazin (or something that treats bacteria and...

    Fantail Goldfish Tails

It's definitely getting worse. You need to treat the tank with something asap. Antibiotics require a vet prescription in a lot of countries due to drug resistance caused by improper use and mis-use over the decades, as mentioned by Essjay. We have the same thing in Australia. The Waterlife...

    Fin rot salt treatment procedure

Your going to need something that treats bacteria asap. Waterlife Myxazin might help but if it's a drug resistant bacteria it might be pointless. You can use medications with salt so see what's available and get it. Do a water change on the tank in the mean time to dilute the salt out a bit.

    Breeding issue

The number of tubercles on the gill cover and pectoral fins has nothing to do with aggressive breeding. The males will continue to drive the females until the breeding season ends. It might be weeks or months depending on what the weather is like. They breed in warm weather and stop when it...

    My newest discus

What are the symptoms of whirling disease? If the fish spin/ spiral out of control and die a few days later, it's an infection in the brain and usually caused by protozoa, bacteria or a virus (protozoa being the most common cause). It's usually associated with a dirty tank (including gravel and...

How is the fish? If the pale patch on its back hasn't gotten worse, then just keep doing water changes and hope it recovers. If the pale patch has gotten worse, post more pictures.

    Strange disease on clown killifish

There's no treatment for swim bladder problems. If it was caused by the internal protozoan infection it might heal on its own, but there's nothing you can do to fix it if it doesn't get better. See how it is in a few weeks time.

    Pregnant guppy or just ill?

It depends on what causes the bend. Sometimes they get growths/ tumors inside them that puts pressure on the spine and causes bends. Other times it's a genetic deformity and other times it's caused by a disease like a bacterial or protozoan infection. You can't do anything about growths and...

    Black worms question

They are cleaner than tubifex worms but can still be bad. If any of the worms are grey or white, they are dead and rotten. Healthy worms will be black. They can be fed to fish that are 1.5-2 inches+ long. Nutritionally, they are probably similar to Daphnia and brineshrimp ad ok to use as part of...

    Fantail Goldfish Tails

It looks slightly worse now than last week but not a lot. It looks like septicemia but that normally has red lines in the fins leading to the red patches. Your fish doesn't have red lines. Septicemia usually spreads rapidly too and there's a noticeable difference after a few days. Fish with...

    Pregnant guppy or just ill?

Normally if the fish is ill, it won't eat, might breathe heavily, might hang out by the surface or hide in a plant, and it might do a stringy white poop. If the fish is swimming normally and eating well, then it's usually healthy.

    Strange disease on clown killifish

It looks like a fat lip from swimming into something. Newly caught rainbowfish get it too from swimming into the glass or jumping and hitting the coverglass. It could also be the start of Columnaris (mouth fungus) but it doesn't look like that to me. Columnaris is a fast growing bacterial...

    Cherry shrimps not multiplying?

How often do you feed them and what do you feed them? If you want lots of babies, the adults need several good meals each day. You need to do lots of water changes to keep the tank clean and to simulate rainfall, which can stimulate fish/ shrimp and get them breeding. A change in water...

Is a heater always necessary for tropical fish?

Is there any chance you can get a normal shaped aquarium instead of a biorb? Fish primarily swim left to right. Biorbs are not the best shape for fish and can be difficult to work out water volume if you need to treat them for anything. A standard rectangular aquarium is better for the fish and...

    Fin rot salt treatment procedure

Holes in the fins can be from bacteria. There have been a few cases over the last few years with male guppies and Bettas getting tiny little holes in their fins. over the next few months the holes get bigger and nothing treats them. We think it's a drug resistant bacteria that is slowly eating...

    Fin rot salt treatment procedure

Don't move him during treatment. If he has damage, catching him in a net can cause more damage and open up wounds. Chasing him around when he's sick isn't good for him either. Just leave him where he is and treat his tank. If it's not better in a week, post an update and include pictures. You...

    Fin rot salt treatment procedure

Too much salt (sodium chloride) can cause the cells in the plant to break down and kill the plant. Sodium bicarbonate is very different to sodium chloride and won't harm plants as long as you only add a little bit at a time. Sodium bicarbonate raises the pH a lot and if you add a lot to an...

    Fin rot salt treatment procedure

I didn't say to use iodised salt. SALT You can add rock salt (often sold as aquarium salt), swimming pool salt, or any non iodised salt (sodium chloride) to the aquarium at the dose rate of 1 heaped tablespoon per 20 litres (5 gallons) of water.
