    my angel

I didn't see the babies till you pointed them out! Do the parents both look the same? Would you be willing to sell/ship some of those babies? I have gotten several fish through the mail. I have gotten them through federal express, airborne express and US post office priority mail. --Tim

Some pictures of my planted tanks

I do sometimes have problems with the stem type plants being uprooted by the applesnails because they are so large. They climb on them not to eat them, but to clean the algae off of them.I have mostly soil/gravel substrate tanks. In the tanks with the soil, the plant roots get a little better...

    An attempt

I love that beautiful sword on the left! Are those giant vals in the background? I have some of those in a 29gal that I planted 1 month ago in one of my gravel only tanks. They are just now starting to show some signs of growth. Are they normally slow to get started? --Tim

WOW! :hyper: That is a beautiful Silver. It is much more colorful and the fins are stunning. Do you know what variety it is? It certainly is not a standard Silver. --Tim

Some pictures of my planted tanks

Wow! Thanks for the nomination. Here is my 5.5 gallon after some pruning. This one has been set up since July 13, 2003. The crypts at the bottom have grown some. They are slow growers however. I bought them as one of those potted plants in the gray fiber stuff. I always remove it, and...

OK, OK. Here is another pic of one of my Chestnut applesnails. I am working on getting pics of some of my other color varieties. It's hard to get the snails to smile for the camera  ! By the way there are many other pictures and information on http://www.applesnail.net. The apples...

My new blue applesnail babies. I would like to breed these. They are in a new 15 gal tank just set up a few days ago. I need to add lots more plants.

One of my favorites so far. A 14 gal high tank with my blue spot platties. This tank has been set up since July 13,2003. Lighting was 30 watts standard flourescent. Recently converted to 36 watt power compact. With the Power compacts, I get some pearling!

My first filterless, soil substrate tank. 10gal. This tank gets some natural sunlight and has one standard flourescent. The picture was taken on July 9,2003 when it was first set up.

Some pictures of my planted tanks

I am somewhat new to planted tanks, so they are not the gorgeous aquascapes that you see in magazines/books, but it is a start. I just use the "put it in there and see what happens" method  I find even with this method that a planted tank is very beautiful! I have all filterless...

    Plant Bulbs

Hmmm... I just bought some of those today! The package says to let the bulbs sit on top of the substrate and start rooting BEFORE planting them. You may have put them in upside down :fun: I have read other posts that they work great! --Tim

Calling all soil substrate, filterless hobbyists

Glad you didn't change the carbon filter if you have a planted tank! The carbon removes many trace elements that plants like! Many people who do use filters in planted tanks take out the carbon inserts. As far as cycling the tank, no I didn't. I didn't plan on having them in there long...

Calling all soil substrate, filterless hobbyists

That's cool about the minnows. I must confess something. I got from aquabid.com some Endlers livebearers. Well, I didn't have a tank set up for them yet (but I wanted them so bad!), so I had this new empty 5.5gal just sitting there. So I filled it with room temperature water, put in...

Calling all soil substrate, filterless hobbyists

I have all planted, filterless tanks with a soil substrate (except two). I am starting this thread to see if there are any adovcates that would like to share experiences. Gravel only filterless are welcome too! This thread is NOT to debate this method, please ;) , but if you are interested...

    fake plants?

Live plants are much more interesting. Your aquascape changes all the time! I like adding more plants now rather than fish! You fish will THRIVE wilth live plants. I have had aquariums for many years, and recently converted to filterless planted tanks. The fish are very active, always hungry...

    Pathetic Amazon swords

 Shew! I'm lucky I don't have the evil snails! You may want to give them a tank of their own with plastic plants  I have tadpole snails, the small ramshorns, olive nerites, common pond, malaysian trumpets, and several bridgesii applesnails. None of them eat my plants. I do feed...

    Pathetic Amazon swords

I bet your snails had a big picnic! :D I LOVE snails, and I know they do a good job of cleaning up dead plant leaves. So even though this terrible thing happened, your snails had a holiday too! Isn't the biodiversity great in our little ecosystems! --Tim

    Plant growing tip

Diana Walsted talks (dead spots) a little about this in her book "Ecology of a Planted Aquarium" as a reason why she uses a soil substrate (which I use), but I don't recall why the soil is better. I'll do some "digging" I also posted this comment on www.naturalaquariums.com forum...

    Low-Light Plants

Hi AquaNut, beautiful tanks! On the tank that has 50 watts of light, how long do you leave them on daily? I just wanted to clear up some things that I saw in some of the other replies. These tanks, although beautiful are not "low tech". AquaNut is using filters, and I assume CO2 injection...

    Cant keep plants alive

Funny :D I have some laterite sitting in some boxes! I bought it before I found the soil substrate so appealing so I don't have any experience with laterite, but I don't think it would be advisable to mix it with a soil substrate. I think laterite is generally used with gravel. Maybe someone...

    Cant keep plants alive

Well, yes and no. It depends on what you want to overcrowd it with. Bigger fish or smaller fish. I have read somewhere that filtration only has a small percentage of the total nitrifying bacteria in it. This means that most of your good bacteria is within the aquarium itself. Are you going...

    Is this typical?

Sounds to me like "natural selection". The smaller ones may not have been as developed as they should be. You'll want the larger, healthier ones anyway. I have Endlers' livebearers, and I only feed them twice a day. The fry are growing just fine. I don't have any platy fry yet, but I do...

    Syngonium, Chlorophytum, Pilea etc

I would be leary of putting non-aquatic plants into aquatic environments. You just don't know if they may emit any toxins into the water. The idea of aquatic plants is to filter the water of fish/snail waste and to provide oxygen through photosynthesis (along with being beautiful). "Air"...

    java buzz

I have some higher light tanks and some lower light tanks. The moss seems to like to the lower light best. I do not use CO2 injection, so no info there. You might also try some Cryptocoryne wendtii. These do well in lower light tanks, they grow slowly however. If you have a 20 with an all...

    Cant keep plants alive

Hello fish guzzi. I was reading your question. Well, of course I have questions. What kind of light do you have over your 5.5 gal? I have one of those and have the standard flourescent that is 14 watts. The plants in this tank are doing quite well. I have a small colony of the tiny...
