How about half-way up the UK in Manchester?

    Substrates & CO2

I must have missed that article, where was it? I use a mixture of Flourite and normal gravel in my tank (50:50) and my amazonian plants grow like crazy. I inject CO2 via a homemade sugar/yeast setup and the pH is stable at 6. Having bogwood that leaches tannins into the water also helps

Have you got it attached to a powerhead or external filter?

Cure for persistent persistent persistent fin rot

Thanks for all the links  Melafix is based on Tea Tree Oil (you can certainly smell it!!).

Anybody else used Seachem's Flourite substrate?

Well it took me the best part of 1.5 hours to get the Flourite to a suitably clean state. If you're on a water meter - go for something else!! It's in the tank now and the water cleared up after about 5-6 hours, so I guess all that effort was worth it

Cure for persistent persistent persistent fin rot

I'm not sure how many people use methylene blue anymore as it can apparently be harmful in large doses? I'm really looking for an off the shelf remedy that's designed for this condition that I haven't tried yet and which has been successful for someone else.

Cure for persistent persistent persistent fin rot

They spawn about once every 3-4 weeks, but the eggs are eaten overnight by my network catfish. I may return the catfish as it's starting to hassle my plec, although I'm a bit reluctant as it's a really stunning fish! PS, I've increased the font size of my signature

    UV sterilizers

I wouldn't imagine so, just connect it in the middle of the ouflow pipe. I was considering adding one to my 104.

Cure for persistent persistent persistent fin rot

A lot of the info is in my sig - 140L, 8 months, 2 x external filters, weekly 20% water changes, bi-weekly gravel cleaning, loads of live plants and I feed them once a day.

    UV sterilizers

They make the water sparkle because of the lower algea content? Out of interest, do the instructions state that they are good at keeping fungal infections under control?

    My piranha

Spats? Have you tried frozen garden worms? Dig them up, clean off the soil, then wack them into the freezer in an ice cream container. Snap bits off as required  My clown loaches and angels love them ;)

    My piranha

Excellent, what do you feed them on?

    UV sterilizers

Vectron UV sterilisers seem to get a good name and I'm considering buying their smallest model to help cure a persistent case of fin rot in my tank. Not cheap though at the best part of £60  If your fish aren't suffering any persistent health problems, I don't think they're necessary.

Cure for persistent persistent persistent fin rot

For the past 6-8 weeks my fish have been suffering from persistent fin rot and I just cannot get rid of it. I've tried Intrepet's Fin Rot treatment, Myxazin, Mylafix etc etc - none have been successful. My Plec seems to be suffering the most and it's dorsal fin is starting to get very shabby...

What filter setup would you recommend..

Is it an Ecco or one of their classic/professional filters? I've tried most things to get rid of any air... :/

What filter setup would you recommend..

I currently use an UGF and Fluval 104 combo, but have been running an Eheim Ecco 2231 for the past 2 weeks prior to me removing the UGF tommorrow... THe Eheim is no quieter than the Fluval ( :/ ) but it appears that the internal compartments do not let as much muck past. The Fluval isn't all...

    cludyish water/filter

What sort of filter do you have? Cram some filter floss in there and change it every 2 days. Perform 10% daily water changes and feed your fish sparingly. It will take a while but will eventually go.

    Need help

I agree with what Dragonslair says above - is it caled Green-X by any chance? Unless you have really high phosphates in your tap water and/or get your water from a borehole, I wouldn't suggest it's necessary. Leave it out of your filter and only use it if your tanks suffers from green algea...

    PROTOZIN

Go with it, increase the temp to 30C and aerate the water constantly. Keep re-dosing for 1-2 weeks after all the visible signs have gone to be 100% sure! Then reduce the temp and aerate (or not) as before. If that doesn't work, try Intrepet's White Spot Plus.

Anybody else used Seachem's Flourite substrate?

I'm going to be removing the UGF system, fish and plants from my tank on Sunday and adding a bag of Seachem's Flourite substrate to the gravel (after a good clean of both) before I finally return the plants and fish. I have 2 mature external filters that will be running throughout. Has anybody...

    CO2

Don't know why you'd need the bicarb - surely that would kill the yeast anyway? Sugar+yeast+water+room temperature is all you need.

    Eheim or Fluval

    Thanks, I'll look into that!
  24. N

    Fluval filter.

My gripes with my 104 are that the hoses gunk up really quickly (hence orange goo comes out of the outlet at every restart), the intercompartmental sealing inside is inadequate so some quite large particles get past the mechanical screens and finally it's getting noiser with age (only 6 months...

    Eheim or Fluval

Before I strip out the UGF in my tank I need to set up a 2nd external filter. I can't decide whether to go for another Fluval 104 or to try and Eheim Ecco 2231. The Fluval is good overall, but noisier than I thought, has poor seals between the compartments inside the filter and the corregated...

    Test readings

If you have live plants, 40-70 mg/l nitrate is a good thing.

    Water disclororation from bogwood.

But if you still want to, soak it in hot or boiling water for 48 hours and then add activated carbon to your filter. It is a natural occurence though and so long as your fish can tolerate it (i.e. they are of Ammazonian origin) then everything should be OK.
  28. N

    Ich - treat or not.

Treat it ASAP!! And keep treating for 1-2 weeks after all visible signs have gone to make sure. Increase the tank temp to 30C and aerate the water constantly to compensate  Intrepet's White Spot Plus is very good...
  29. N

    What dechlorinator?

So long as it's allowed to contact all the water. I personally add it and then give the water a good stir followed by 10 mins to make sure.
  30. N

    Test readings

That's not true at all. Practical Fishkeeping magazine recommend water changes at 70 mg/l. Ammonia and nitrites should be zero all the time.

    Remove UGF.

That's one of the reasons I'm asking for advice in this thread - I intend to remove it all ;)
  34. N

    High nitrates.

I agree with the 70 mg/l rule. Try Green-X in your filter - good at keeping algea and nitrates at bay

    Beefheart as fishfood.

As alternatives to heart, try garden worms and sheeled frozen prawns. I freeze the worms after cleaning off the soil to kill and preserve them and then snap a bit off as required. My clown loaches love them and my angels love the prawns

    Remove UGF.

I have a tank: http://fish.orbust.net/forums/index.php?sh...showtopic=21033 from which I would like to remove the UGF components, add an additional external filter and do a general spring clean. I get nitrite spikes after every water change which I have now traced to excess organic...

When is it right to kill a sick fish?

I've tried anti-bacterial remedies as well as anti-fungal. None work in the longer term and only provide short-term benefits. I could try putting the problematic fish in a large bucket by a radiator and treating it singly - but I don't have a 2nd heater and I don't suppose a heater in a...

When is it right to kill a sick fish?

I don't have the room or the cash for a 2nd tank, even a small one... I only raised the temp to 30C after the first 2 or 3 remedies didn't work and the instructions on the next treatment said to do so... I usually keep my tank at 25-26C. I must say that to protect the health of my other fish...
