Help! New Rams (Need Gender Id And Advice)

Firstly — could a moderator possibly move this to the New World section for me? Sorry! @thereverend turtle: Hmmm ... that's what I've been thinking. Would you recommend keeping the three males as they are, in that case, or adding several females? At the moment, my plan is to see how they get...

Help! New Rams (Need Gender Id And Advice)

I think I urgently need to visit the LFS again about this. I need some advice first though. What should I do and can you possibly tell me the gender of our rams (see the video — a link is at the bottom)? Here are some more details... We bought four rams yesterday. All were healthy in the shop...

Poor little fishy is no more

    Very Ill New Ram

I think I've managed to photograph each of them now. It's not easy because two of them look rather similar and they keep swapping places. Can you have a stab at sexing them from these photographs?

    Very Ill New Ram

I haven't got an isolation chamber yet. Is there an easy improvised method of doing this? He / she did swim quite well for a short way but came to rest on the bogwood again. I'll try to film / photograph the others.

    Very Ill New Ram

The fish is now attempting to swim but rolling around. It's horrible to watch and I haven't had this problem before, much as I'm sure it's not unusual :(

    Very Ill New Ram

We bought four rams today. Three are fine but one is lying on the bottom by the bog wood and seems to be in a very bad way. He or she has a lot of excrement trailing out. All of the fish were healthy when we got them this afternoon. The water parametres should be ideal. Netting them was...

Help Please! Need Advice On Stocking

Thanks, MBOU. I rather enjoyed the red ;) The tatia catfish does look nice. I don't recall seeing one in any of our lfs but I'll ask about ordering one. The rainbows ... the problem is that we want some larger ones. I love the 4" + types but obviously our tank isn't quite large enough. On the...

Help Please! Need Advice On Stocking

I'll be adding more fish to our 125 litre, 33 gallon tank over the next few weeks. It's a 40" long tank The ph is quite high (around 7.6) and the water is hard. The tank is well planted. We have: 8 cherry barbs 4 albino congo tetras 4 sailfin mollies (on order) We're considering something...

    Fish-in Cycling

I second some of that. Bullet points and line gaps between paragraphs would have made this easier for me when I first came to the site. It's a well written piece and I read it several times. I might have read it fewer times if the information I was searching for was a little more apparent (ie...

Any other suggestions for a tank this size with these tank mates and water type?

What Should I Do — Plant Advice Needed

Thanks for clearing up the gallons / watts issue, Henson. I now have the LEDs and I bought some new vallis. The elodea had straightened up within hours of fitting the new lights and I'm seeing much less 'mushy stuff' on them now, after a bit of a trim. Thanks for the help :)

    Stocking And Tank Mates

Thanks, lock man. Do you think we could get six? The lfs suggested we just get four and add more later. But six is only two more than four ( :fun: ) and I imagine that it wouldn't be a bad thing to get them all from the same batch. Would this be a bad idea? And would that stop us from getting...

    Stocking And Tank Mates

The water is quite hard and the ph is around 7.6 in the tank. That's part of the reason for getting mollies (other than my daughter wanting them). We've been doing regular water changes so far: slightly under 50% every couple of days. I intend to reduce that to something like 25% once a week...

    Stocking And Tank Mates

Our tank is still doing well. The new LED lights are in and we're now wondering which other fish to stock it with. We currently have: 8 cherry barbs who've already produced fry and who we find highly entertaining 4 albino congo tetras We've ordered 4 sailfin mollies because my daughter is...

What Should I Do — Plant Advice Needed

The tank is 33 gallons (125 litres to me — I'm in the UK!). As for the cold water ... if nothing else it made my cherry barb start spawning within half an hour. I now have fry (hence the new java fern)! I'm glad that it's not responsible for ruining the plants though. I've also noticed string...

What Should I Do — Plant Advice Needed

The lights are Insterpet Daylight LED strips (the ones with the adhesive strip). I'm not sure whether they're proper plant growing ones but they're not the ones that cost hundreds. I did buy some fertiliser tablets today — the type that you bury in the gravel and which last a year. I'd heard...

What Should I Do — Plant Advice Needed

This is my daughter's new aquarium (I'm looking after it). The plants are only a week old but they're already looking a little sorry for themselves. The elodea appears to be turning brown and slightly mushy at the edges and the vallis is breaking up (see pictures). The lights for the aquarium...

    Cherry Barb Fry?

Hmmm ... I did think it was. I've covered a pebble with java moss and put that right next to this area. Fingers crossed (although I don't hold much hope).

    Cherry Barb Fry?

As some of you will know, my new cherry barbs spawned last night. I spotted this a few minutes ago. It's certainly alive, but is it a fry? (It's best viewed large and at the highest resolution. The maybe-fry is in the middle). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1f9rRt6sqC0

    Cherry Barb Eggs?

I'm thinking that's more likely but I can't find any matching pictures for aquarium snail eggs either. Maybe I'll have to wait and see. I might remove them, along with some of the gravel from this area, just in case. Thanks for you help though :)

    Cherry Barb Eggs?

I have. They're usually round and separate but on the other hand, there aren't many close up images. Some do appear to have a glue-like substance between them and be laid in mounds.

    Cherry Barb Eggs?

Only three small pest snails. Do these look like their eggs? I know that barb eggs should be separate and round but I did read that they sometimes lay them in cabomba too.

    Cherry Barb Eggs?

My cherry barb were spawning last night. Are these some of the eggs? They're not in a breeding tank but I might separate the eggs from the barbs, if possible. I'm sure there are some in the gravel, of course, but two of these blobs appeared on the cabomba in the area they were spawning. With the...

    Water Changes

We have eggs on the cabomba. I can't quite believe that adding cold water did this. I thought that fish were meant to be prepared for breeding for about a month. We only bought the fish a few days ago.

    Water Changes

Why, out of interest (other than because I have no experience!)? I presume she'd need to be transfered to a (nonexistent) breeding tank ...? Oh, and they're still at it. She's had two of the males on her. One keeps having to chase the other away - funny to watch although it's a little disconcerting.

    Water Changes

One of my male cherry barbs is currently fluttering himself up the side of one of the females. They're going round in circles in the cabomba. Would this be the spawning behaviour you spoke of? If so ... oh dear again.

    Water Changes

I do like the look of the python (and particularly the DIY alternative). How and when do python users add dechlorinator? I probably should just get used to the bucket and jug method. I'd like something that my daughter could be more involved with though, and buckets of water aren't light...

    Water Changes

I removed two buckets worth and replaced them with water that was very slightly warmer than the tank should be. The temperature is now, somewhat miraculously, exactly what it should be. Thanks! Out of interest, how do you get water into your tanks? If you're doing a 50% change, do you always...

    Water Changes

Oh dear. I've just filled it back up with cold water. So I should have used hot water from the tap, even though it's boiler heated? I thought it might have had chemical qualities that wouldn't have been ideal. Do you think the cherry barbs will be ok? I don't suppose there's much I...

    Water Changes

I'm currently doing a roughly 50% water change in my tank. The thing I don't understand is why it's ok to add cold water from the tap, particularly at this time of year when it really is quite chilled. It's not as though the water heats up quickly, particularly with the heater switched off...

    Show Off Your Tank!

Thanks, Ruskull — they do sound ideal. Have you had dwarf or blue gouramis too? We're torn between all of these (and presume that we couldn't have more than one kind).

    Show Off Your Tank!

Oddly, you've already led me to consider Pearl Gouramis. I researched your avatar! :) I have very hard water though and the ph is quite high. Do you think they'd struggle with it?

New Tank - Fish And Any Other Advice?

I bought some test strips yesterday. This is today's result. Am I right in thinking that, without fiddling with the ph, kh, etc, dwarf gourami and rams (even bolivian rams) will be out of the question? Or should they, despite the theory, be ok? Are there other, bright and unusual fish, that'd be...
