Over the last few weeks my 2.5 gallon planted tank has developed brown algae on the gravel and glass. Is there a way to permanently get rid of this stuff? :angry: I've read that it's diatoms and that it goes away in a cycled tank? Well my tank is cycled but it's obviously growing!

I don't know about Jungle Ammonia Out but I know Ammo Lock does not remove ammonia so it's still there for the bacteria. Ammo Lock only detoxifies the ammonia. Also Ammo Lock does not change the readings on test kits eg it will still indicate the presence of ammonia after using Ammo Lock.

Well I went ahead and got him but I think he has septicemia so I'm treating him with Marycan2. He has visible blood vessels on the base of his dorsal, anal, and caudal fins and under his stomach. :(

The question isn't whether or not the biowheel or biomax works. The question is which one offers better performance and is more cost effective. The biowheel just like any other wet/dry filter offers superior oxygen for the bacteria colony there's no ifs or buts about it..it's scientific fact...

Hydor makes a nice pad heater for small tanks. It's fully submersible so you only need a small gap for the cable to exit the tank. Unfortunately it cannot keep a constant temp so it needs to be unplugged during the spring/summer. http://www.hydor.it/inglese/mini.htm

Stresscoat and Novaqua both remove chlorine and breaks down chloramines without removiing ammonia. Anyway if you're fishless cycling why do you care to detoxify ammonia? That's what Ammo Lock does but you don't need it.

Yes even if the shrimp is introduced first or at the same time the betta may still be curious, however, the betta will also be somewhat preoccupied from being in a completely new tank/environment so that will help a little.

Don't get any shrimp that gets big or have long big pinchers. Compatible shrimp are Amano, Ghost, Cherry Fire and some others that have small claws and don't grow big. Bamboo shrimp are harmless too but they get pretty big, bigger than a betta. Best stocking order is at the same time or...

I use filter floss to filter fine particles and dust.

I think it could be bad in situations where you have picky fish, in which case they'll just eat the stuff they like out of the mix and not touch the rest which leads to water pollution. If your fish eats up all the food then it's ok.
