After looking at different species i think i like the red banded puffer or Tetraodon erythrotaenia. i think they get to be about 3 to 3.5 inches. Also can i keep live food like snails and shrimp in the tank all the time to help clean up until they are eaten?

i almost did the same thing once. i swear it was a day and a half and everytime i looked the snail was in the same exact place. my hubby told me just to wait a few more hours and sure enough the snail got his butt in gear a few minutes later.

Most info you find on fish ,IMO is just that...someones opinion. Everyone has different tank sizes, groups of fish, maintenance schedules, filtration etc.. So different things work for different setups. as long as you take it slow when adding fish and try to research each species requirements...

i think another thing to keep in mind is what your fish want. i know some fish like large leaf plants they can hide in and some like smaller plants.

i like harlequin rasboras. Also tiger barbs come in a few different color variations and are very playful. cant be kept with long finned fish as they tend to nip. Also if your looking for something interesting take a look at different freshwater "critters" like crabs frogs snails etc.. some are...

i agree with putting either a more natural looking substrate or if you want the extra color go for something darker. i think white gravel tends to make the fishes colors washed out. darker gravel makes the fish look brighter.

you should buy your own test kit. dont just rely on petsmart. although you can use them as a back up if you think your test is off. Tell your dad not to do that again.
