    resealing tank

Hi Oranda, The best thing you can do is remove all the old silicone with a box cutter or similar knife. Afterwards clean the sides with acetone to remove any remaining silicone. Be careful not to apply to much so that you don't dissolve the silicone between the seams (that's what keeps the tank...

    Betta has Pop-Eye

Assuming the "Uncycled Water" was dechlorinated there is no risk at all. What causes the cycling process is the bacteria in your filter media that breaks down Ammonia and Nitrite. Assuming there weren't any major temp changes or contact with chlorinated water the bacteria should be fine and the...

    "Loose" Amazon Biotope

Well this is good to hear, I think for now I'll stick to the list of fish in post twelve and the plants and aquascape in post 8. Can you by any chance list the feeding habits/ what food each fish needs? Edit: Any tips on disguising an Air Stone in the tank?

Are there any tetras you can recommend that can replace the ember tetras that are slightly bigger and more prominent? I decided to go with what you said about more species and added ten black phantom tetras to the mix, now what worries me is less that the stocking is "100%" according to...

Can anyone tell my betta is Half-moon or Full-moon

I used to have two Betta tanks 5 years ago. In my humble opinion a weak HOB filter is a good idea even for a bowl. Something small and inexpensive with the outtake above the water. This serves you by taking out any large chunks of waste (making cleaning a bit easier) and to slightly move/aerate...

Yes Byron has been a huge help in pretty much all my posts so far. As of now I'm planning everything out and slowly buying materials. At the end of this month (Once I finish my finals) I'll start building the tank stand and cycling, will start posting pictures when there's something to post lol.

I have finished reading up on all the fish and plant species and I know know what I want. The fish stocking will be (Had to reduce some numbers because the sterbai corys are larger): As for plants I think I'll have some amazon swords in the background, chain swords in the mid/front and...

Thank you Byron, this has given me a lot to ponder and some more research is needed on my part. I'll reread your post tomorrow, do my research then reply with my findings and semi-finalized decisions about plant and fish species. Again thanks for all the help. Sent from my MX4 using Tapatalk

Quite the informative post, you knowledge on the subject is impressive and very helpful. Your tank designs are really nice and I'll use them as a sort of template when planning mine out. I would like to know what plant species you've got that float and if any of the species I mentioned float. My...

    "Loose" Amazon Biotope

I was thinking something along those lines for the aquascape (excluding the leaf litter). I assume I can't just throw any random dried up leaves in the tank. Also are the tannins a must? As I personally would prefer the tank to have clear water. I understand that there are also parts of the...

    "Loose" Amazon Biotope

I've been busy thinking up ideas for a tank I recently purchased. Right now I'm thinking an Amazonian biotope. The reason I stated "loose" in the title is I don't want it to be specific to a certain part of the amazon basin but more of a collection of the fish and plant species from the amazon...

Not planning on breeding them, was planning on getting a male and a female in hopes that they won't kill each other. I was hoping any fry produced wouldn't be left alone by the other fish. In any case I'd probably give all the fry to my lfs or rehome them. I'll look into the red long fin...

I thought of another idea... I thought an amazon biotope would be nice for a few reasons. 1. I can safely have a larger quantity of each species of fish without worrying about overcrowding the tank. This ensures the fish stay happy and I stay happy lol. 2. Attempting to replicate a natural...

Yeah I heard about Dutch and Logic. I read about the upside down catfish and turns out it might not get along with the cherry barbs. I was also thinking that even if I replaced the Cherry Barbs with this catfish I might have an overcrowding issue in the sense that I'll have way to many bottom...

    Fertilizers and CO2 systems.

That's from my tap water. A local fish hatchery where I live is raising a variety of fish in tap water. Same tap water as mine and with no additives so I assume it's safe. Edit: I had a fishpond of rosey barbs in the yard of my last house. It tapped into the same source of tap water as I'm...

Hi I have one more question, hope someone will see it, if not I'll make another post. Today I want to a lfs to take a look at prices, fish and some things I need. While there I saw an upside down catfish and fell in love. Is it possible to switch out a bristlenose pleco with the upside down...

    Fertilizers and CO2 systems.

This has been very informative. What I understand is this, I should choose slow growing plants and worry about the missing nutrients after the tank is set up. Are there any moss that grow more like the moss you find on rocks outside? The Java moss is more stringy and bushy and is less attractive...

    Fertilizers and CO2 systems.

I am slowly setting up a 245 liter (approx 60 gallons) tank. I would like it to be moderately planted. I have a few questions about fertilizers and CO2 systems. 1. Is a CO2 system necessary if I'm using what are considered beginner plants and have an air rock? There is a slight percentage of...

Introducing fish into a Fish-less cycled tank.

Thanks :) Yeah the shrimp will definitely go in last. What I'm worried about with the plecos is their bioload. Don't wanna overload the filter. So I thought it might be better to not add them in together. Thought?

Introducing fish into a Fish-less cycled tank.

One more question. In my stocking plan (image below), I'm adding two plecos can I first add the shoal of cherry barbs then the shoal of zebra danios with one pleco and then the last shoal of Corys with the second pleco?

That's not close to what I'm getting at. What I'm looking for are fish with interesting behaviour patterns and that are easy to take care of. I am a beginner after all and I'd prefer to have fish that are "more hardy". I do plan on expanding on the hobby in the future but I want to start with...

I don't claim to be an expert as I'm completely new to the hobby myself. But from all the research I've done I understand that it is possible to house other fish with a Betta but it's pretty much down to luck and the bettas personality. In any case wait for someone who knows a bit more than I.

Great! Thanks for the reply, I'll make sure to have sand and bogwood in the tank. Might use the river pebbles around plant roots so that they don't get up rooted. As for the plecos, I understand that the fry are free swimming after a few days eating the egg sack or something. So after that...

I think that I will go with this list and bump up the corys to 12. Three more questions though: 1. I was just wondering if coconut shells could supplement bogwood in Pleco's diet? Was looking into building caves and thought "Oh maybe coconuts are edible like bogwood, they both release tannis". I...

So this is my final list (I think lol), the plecos will be a male and a female to lessen the chance of fighting. I'm hoping any fry they produce will quickly be eaten by the Barbs. I think I can get away with six corys, I'm just scared of overcrowding the tank. I might replace the Cherry Barb...

Are there any fast moving Cichlid that can be added to the tank? Edit: Just thought about a Tiger Shark or a dwarf puffer, are these an option with the Cherry Barbs and Zebra Danios? Second Edit: How about Corydoras or odessa barbs, both seem to be fast moving and need to be kept in a school...

I can still put sand in as my tank isn't set up and cycled yet. I'm currently just waiting on all the gear I need to arrive. Since I'm impatient I thought that while I wait I'd come up with a stocking plan. Let's say the high KH really is a problem, how would I lower it without having an...
