How Long In The Breeding Trap

Ii'm with both of you on not wanting to stress her. An additional tank isn't an option right now but just hoping to make it an educational experience (my son can already identify males and females, has gotten pretty good at identifying various types of fish and knows which ones are cold or...

How Long In The Breeding Trap

Our Mickey Mouse platy is so huge that it almost looks like she can't swim straight. Instead of being really still, it's like she's on crack. She has the white spot down yonder and while she moves about a bunch, she isn't eating anything. I'm guessing she's about to drop? If so, how long can...

What Fish Should We Add Next?

Interesting about the gouramis--they are sold at the store as Male Gouramis with no females available at the time. We did have two and one died but so did about 8 other fish during the literal fish fry (our heater fritzed) The tetras were originally a threesome. Our platys have yet to drop...

What Fish Should We Add Next?

We finally got the tank back in balance and it seems stable. I'm going to give it another week and a water change but we'd like to restock a bit before company at the end of the month. We have a 29 gallon tank with the following survivors: 5 glo fish 1 dwarf gourami 4 platy fish-male...

    Aquarium Levels--needing Feedback

One more celebration: I thought my black skirt tetras were goners. They had gone all silver and were just kind of ticking in the top corner of the tank. Within a couple of days of getting the levels and temp right, they are back to black and swimming happily! Now if we could just get the...

    Aquarium Levels--needing Feedback

Oh yeah--we do give deshelled peas to the coldwater goldfish tank because it is the all time remedy and preventative for swim bladder!! How do you do it for the smaller, tropical fish?

    Aquarium Levels--needing Feedback

Very interesting. The overwhelming majority of what I have read has been to feed 2-3 times/day but like you said only what they will eat in a couple of minutes. Hmmmm....I'll switch to the once a day with a day of fasting. The Whisper is 20-40 I believe.

    Aquarium Levels--needing Feedback

After doing about a 30% water change with the gravel vac and adding only dechlorinated water about 4 hours ago, my pH is at 7.0 and my nitrites are at 0. I'll see what they are in the morning but it already sounds better than it was!

    Aquarium Levels--needing Feedback

how often do you perform water changes? I try to do it once a week but it sometimes goes two when did you last rinse the filter in tank water? This doesn't sound like something I'm doing. Tell me more what size is the tank? 30 gallon what filter is on the tank? a Whisper power filter temp...

    Aquarium Levels--needing Feedback

My 3 year old son dumped about 3 weeks of food in there yesterday and I've got to do a change today. I'm guessing that's GOT to do something to levels! But, the problem has been going on for some time now. I have aquarium gravel in there and artificial plants and one of those artificial...

    Aquarium Levels--needing Feedback

I just got the API master test kit and tested all my levels. We've had a rash of fish dying lately, part of which was due to a malfunctioning heater. I think the issues started before that, though. According to the strips I was using earlier, the only thing off was pH which has been...

Dying Fish And Non-prolific Platy Fish

How's this for a surprise? I just checked my tap water and it read perfect on all 5 areas. Should I not add conditioner???

Dying Fish And Non-prolific Platy Fish

According to the strips, Nitrates were at 40, Nitrites at 0. I use the Tetra Easy Balance and Aqua Safe, both according to the directions on the bottle (10ml/10gal & 5ml/10gal respectively) Aqua Safe doesn't mention ammonia. Yes on the siphon being the gravel vac. I do think I stressed...

Dying Fish And Non-prolific Platy Fish

Tank is 4 months old. 29 gallons. Prior to issues: 3 black skirt tetras, 5 glofish, 6 assorted platy fish (2 males/4 females)a cory cat and 2 snails. Several times I thought the female platy fish were PG but never went dormant/quiet or seemed to drop fry. Every time I tested the water...

Low Ph/no Pg Platies & Dying Fish

I have been using Mardel 5in1 test strips and they show safe nitrates, nitrites and hardness. Consistently low, however, are total alkalinity and pH. It's always in the bottom of the "add pH Plus" & " add buffer up" We've had the tank for about 3 months and the pregnant platy we initially...

    Mold(?) On My Filter?

It's really not crusty and actually cleans off just with a quick wipe. It's kind of slimy--not the speckled looking stuff in one of the pictures. Honestly, it looks very similar to what I've seen growing on food past its prime in my fridge! It's "fluffy" if that makes sense and...

    Mold(?) On My Filter?

I have a relatively new tropical tank (Jan 2009) and I have had trouble with what looks like mold ("fluffy" white growth) on my filter. It grows on the top, moist areas of my filter and inserts. What could be going on and what should I do? It has a cover of sorts on it and I've wondered if it...

    Power Outage

is there anything I can do for aeration without the battery operated pump? The roads are coated and a trip to the store isn't happening....

    Power Outage

Right now we still have power but anticipate up to an inch of ice tonight. Chances are, we will lose power. We have a gas fireplace in the living room where the tank is but if memory serves me right, it will only keep the temp around 60. Last time this happened it was for several days. Is...

    Getting Water Back In Balance

Cool. I did cycle the tank for about a week and used water from a well established, healthy tank. It went through a "bloom" last week and then cleared up. I did, however, treat the water for ick--the sick platy appeared to have it. I'll pick up a liquid water test kit if they have it at...

    Getting Water Back In Balance

Yesterday, we had a platy die (she had given premature birth right after we brought her home and went downhill from there) Then today, I noticed that we were missing a glo-fish (danio) I can't find it anywhere! I tested the water and the pH is low (6.2ish) and the nitrates and nitrites are...

Platy Still Pg After Dropping Fry?

Do you think those first ones might have been premature as well and didn't make it? We don't have large fish (platys and tetras and danios) We may try a trap or net the next time around. Will this hurt her future ability to have babies?

Platy Still Pg After Dropping Fry?

Sunset platy dropped fry 3 nights ago. We only saw 3 but assumed there were more. She still had a gravid spot and the next morning, we saw a few more babies. She STILL had a gravid spot that appeared to have "eyes" but this morning, no new babies. In fact, no babies at all. I know its...
