I used a black light in my tank for a year. If I remember right it caused alot of algae growth and I read it was not good for the fish. Plus it really doesnt look as good in the tank. At least thats my opinion. :/

can you get direct sunlight to the tank? If not just leave your light on longer this will help stimulate algae growth. Besides you probably have algae even if you cant feel it. Plus to much disturbance and it wont grow either.

I'm not sure about the puffers with malawi cichlids. They are pretty aggresive. Cats are cool. Check out planetcatfish.com. very cool site I suggest a vampire pleco or queen arabesque or something cool like that
