    Diary of my Saltwater setup

Aw thanks guys I feel all choked. Its nice to hear you are behind me!! I'm not going to add fish yet the rock is coming along lovely. It has so much colour in it already but it is getting more colourful. There are some lovely red raised plaques coming up. They are about 3 mm in size and have...

    Fry tank

This may be a daft idea... If when I did water changes I put the water in the fry tank would that keep the bacteria fed? I suppose I could always put a couple of danios in the breeding net (in the fry tank) to keep them away from the babies...

    Upset at Petsmart

My experience is that LFS take anything except guppies! I got rid of all my guppies to a friend (bar one yellow male) because I couldn't handle having to leave all the fry in to get eaten.

    Please don't crossbreed your Endlers!!

I can understand both sides of this debate (apart from calling people nazis which is argumentative and downright rude - I thought there was a policy against trolling on these forums...). OK I agree that captive breeding of fish with orignal genotype isn't going to help out the wild population...

anyone want to see my tricolor swordtail?

If it is too big its usually because its a bitmap. If you open it then go on "save as" and change the file type from "bitmap" to "jpeg" it reduces the file size. You could also try resizing it (just click on your help button for instructions) HTH

    gravid spots in fry

What do gravid spots look like. I have 2 swordtail fry in a breeding net that are about 4 weeks old. One is a lot fatter than the other. One is all orange the other is orange with a black spot at the base of its tail - is this a gravid spot? If so, is it the boys or the girls that have one...?

    Fry tank

Thanks Alaska. May add a single layer of gravel though cause its going to be in my living room so needs "prettying up" a bit. By stabilise I mean check that the bacteria are functioning properly. Just for my own piece of mind I like to have at least 3 days of 0 nitrate/negligable nitrate...

    Fry tank

I have been given a 5 gal tank that I thought would be brilliant for putting fry in. It is a cold water tank but I have bought a mini heater today. It has a filter (which I am going to put in my 10 gal) and I am going to put my "extra" filter from my 10 gal into this one - cheat maturing. I'll...

    Diary of my Saltwater setup

Well I bought a new tank. Its 20 Gal with a trickle wet/dry and machanical filter (with carbon too), a heater and tropical lights (2 of - on fish one plant). I am going to try my hardest to set up a successful marine tank. People say I will struggle but hey I did 5 years at uni, worked full...

Does saltwater affect Nitrite testing kits?

I took my kit to the LFS along with some water for testing. He said the nitrite reading is 0 by his kit. He said the fluoresnce may just be due to the fact that it is 0. It was fluorescent yellow at first and went green after 30 secs to 1 min. Anyway I have binned Tetratest just in case and...

    SEAHORSES!!!

Go on search as there is another thread about seahorses active at the moment - it has far more advice and less critiscism. Best of luck if you do get them but the warning is it wont be easy - and they may die...

I know its going to be hard work...

Thanks again for all your advice (those of you that offered advice instead of critiscism...). I am still fishless and critterless (apart from what came with the live rock). I am on my way to another LFS to "have a look" and will come back empty handed (bar some salt). Going to cycles for at...

    frogs, newts, and crabs

I'd heard crabs are pains to keep in the tank. They can get out of the tiniest space. Also you need to have your water level lowered enought to allow there to be some "dry land".

Seahorses or clown fish in the UK

They have some in stock at the moment at wings and fins in reddish, stockport (near manchester). Not sure of the price but theyre about 3-4 inches in size.

    converting to salt

That's great EMdina. I wish I had the space for a larger tank. I have the money (just about) but its the space that is limited. I also have to fit in two house bunnies and a parrot (cage and perch) so there are limited places left where the fish can go (and be happy). I have tons of room...

    converting to salt

I am in the same boat. I am determined that it is going to work. I am not going to rush things. I am not going to cut corners. I am going to be diligent with everything. I don't accept people saying don't do it because its hard - I enjoy a challenge and the world is a better place through...

    White and Blue Guppies!

I had a sky blue female one but she went to another home as my guppies were getting terrorised... I have one left who is ok and a tough nut (and who tries to mate with my swordtail?.?.?.?.) and he is a really vivid pale yellow. Hes gorge!

Does saltwater affect Nitrite testing kits?

No joke it does. It works for the freshwater tank just fine. Pour water in the (empty) vial and over 30 secs or so it turns fluorescent green! If I use a new vial it works but the next time I use it it glows green again! Ps i do rinse them thouroughly afterwards... Help? I'm confused

I know its going to be hard work...

Its was about an hour. Was stored in a bag of water - just like fishies... and I acclimitised it like fish too (not sure if I needed to or not but thought better safe than sorry). It seems OK - plenty of little crawly things on and theres some sort of ?cockle? that keeps sticking its feelers...

    How long?

I understood that it was better to leave them (for up to 2 weeks) than risk someone overfeeding and poisoning the tank. If you do get someone to feed them measure it out and HIDE THE REST. The right amount of food never looks enough and I wouldn't risk them wanting to top them up...

What do u like and dont like about fish keeping

I love it when they nibble your arm when your messing about in the tank. I usually have my hand in to see if my loazy pleco is still alive... It always is its just VERY lazy. I love it when you find surprise fry... I hate it when fry get eaten as your trying to get them out - race against...

So here is my plan. I have a 20gal tank - a bargain of Feline on these forums... It has tropical lights at the mo but I'm not planning on keeping coral so its not a problem for the minute. It has a BioLife combi filter which is a wet/dry trickle filter and also had a cartridge filter and...

Don't worry my fish are staying where they are. Just got a filter that is ripe. Gonna use it start a larger tank for my fresh water but wondered if i could use it to start a salt water tank. Thanks for all your replies. I am getting a 20 gal tank on sat (off one of the members off here :D) and am going to "have a go". I am diligent with my water changes and do plan to get plenty of live rock and sand. Hopefully I can start setting it up in 4 weeks or so and adding fish a few...

    New to marine

Thankyou. I am beginning to think that I may have too much trouble with a 10 gal (38l) marine tank after reading some posts in here. Only problem is I can't really afford to setup a larger tank and by the sounds of it the 125l (is this 50 gal) is going to be too small anyway - even though...
