    white cotton looking stuff

We had this in our NEW aquarium (never treated with medication). It was growing on some of our fomites (especially a rock that we have). I was concerned about it, so I would scrape it off daily, but soon noticed that my rainbow sharks would clean it off for me. It has since disappeared...

    High Nitrates

It sounds like your tank is overloaded. The general equation I've read is one inch of fish per gallon of water. 43 liters is about 10 gallons, so you should have 10 inches of fish (ie: 10 one inch fish). I'm not totally familiar with the fish that you have, but each fish would have to have a...

Help with Algae in Betta tank!!!

For LARGER tanks, a good choice may be a Spotted Raphael Catfish. Keep in mind that this fish can grow to 8 inches, so a larger tank is needed. This is a rather peaceful fish (unless the fish you put in fit into it's mouth, ie: under 1.5 inches), but is robust. We have one in a tank with...

    PH to high

I'd also recommend checking the TAP water straight from the faucet. Our's has a pH of 8. It is hard to keep the pH lower if one adds this water to the tank in partial water changes.

From what I've read, Methylene Blue is also not very effective. Perhaps a Malachite Green? I've read that it's MUCH more effective, but some sources state that it may be carcinogenic. I've used products like NeoSulfa/Bettamax since they use a "shotgun" approach, and seem to cure MOST diseases...

    Do Bettas Prefer Smaller Spaces?

I was having trouble maintaining a good quality water in the 2 gallon. I think that the tap water here is too polluted (pH of 8 straight from the faucet for starters). I purchased an Eclipse 12 gallon with built-in Biowheel. My betta LOVES it. He likes to swim in the currents from the...

    betta trouble

He's doing great and hardly acts like he was sick at all. He seems to love playing in the currents, and is back to interacting with us. This betta seems very susceptible to fungal infections. He has a new 12 gallon tank ALL to himself, so if it occurs again I doubt that it's water quality...

    betta trouble

Well, I made the move. I had a transient problem with him stuck in the net while transfering him into the zip-lock, but he seemed to do well for about 36 to 48 hours. In fact, he seemed to LOVE the new, larger tank, and seemed to play almost continuously after his initial investigation...

    betta trouble

Thanks for the info. I will try to slowly acclimate him, since this fish has more personality than other bettas I've had. He's like a part of the family. The new tank is an Eclipse 12. I hope that the combination of Biowheel and undergravel will help out since tanks under 30 gallons are more...

    betta trouble

I purchased a 12 gallon tank with Biowheel filtration, and added an undergravel filter with a powerhead. This should be better than the 2 gallon with UGF powered by an airstone. If I transfer my betta tomorrow, are there any suggestions for a less stressful transfer? I don't want to stess him...

    betta trouble

Unfortunately not. I did a second change today (the second in 24 hours) of about 25% and the Ammonia level is about 1-1.5, the nitrite is still 60+ (dark ruby color). I didn't bother with the nitrate today. The betta is doing ok, but is showing more fin rot. Unfortunately, I think that the...

    Otto or Chinese Algae Eater?

They're right. My oto gets the occasional nip from my betta when he's in a bad mood. The oto just swims away, then goes back to eating. He's completely non-aggressive-and about 1" long. I've heard that they get as large as 1.5".

    betta trouble

I just did the second 25% water change in three days. We had an aquatic plant in the tank that recently rotten at the base, now that I think about it, that was removed about 5 days ago. I hope that the decaying plant matter than almost undoubtedly escaped my gravel vacuum is responsible, and...

    betta trouble

Well, I waited the entire 10 minutes for the test, and the nitrate is actually about 60+.

    betta trouble

BTW, the tank is about 3 months old, with the betta in place since the start. We did place an otocinclus in two days ago, so I'm wondering if the tank is in mid-cycle for the second fish. The high nitrite worries me, as the oto is rather fragile by reputation. Would another change help? Is...

    betta trouble

I may have the problem. Ammonia is about one. Nitrite is OVER 3.3 (possibly MUCH over)-the test water is RUBY. The nitrate is about 25 (after a change yesterday). Is this 2 gallon salvageable? It seems like the biological filter is working, but I have high levels of EVERYTHING!

    Help! Tiger Barb

I have a 55 gallon hex with one tiger barb, one gold tiger barb (I assume an albino of some sort), two green tiger barbs a black barb (again, I assume a variation of the tiger with a reddish face) and a male/female pair of neon rosey barbs. In the same tank are two rainbow sharks. Everyone...

    betta trouble

Our betta is very active, and displays great personality, but he often suffers from what appears to be fin rot. It seems to occur most often AFTER a partial water change, though this time it occured three weeks after the last change. His fins grow what looks like cotton wool. The fin turns...

Help with Algae in Betta tank!!!

Our betta seems to get along with an otocinclus that we recently put into his 2 gallon tank. I wouldn't worry about the betta in this situation in any case. They only grow to 1.5 to 2 inches-hardly a worry to a betta.

    Do Bettas Prefer Smaller Spaces?

We have our betta in a 2 gallon acrylic hex sold under the "Top Fin" brand (Petsmart). Our betta seems to like this size, though I'm having trouble keeping water chemistry in the correct parameters. My fish seems to do ok, except that he gets what appears to be fungus (cotton variety)...

    Aquarium Salt

I've been told that you may also use rock salt, but NOTHING that is iodized (ie: table salt). This comes from my sister who has her own aquaria, and works with the tanks at Petsmart. They haven't kicked any fish off, but I'd stick with aquarium salt unless one of our experts agrees.

    Why Cichlids???

I had a Jack Dempsey years back that DEFINITELY reacted to me (I have a betta currently that does the same). Cichlids have the benefit of being one of the smartest families of fish, though not the best community fish, and among the hardest on landscaping.

    Advice appreciated

Sounds like it could be water quality, though the betta should be the hardiest of the lot. The head turned white before or after the death? It's common for the betta to lose pigmentation after death, and I've seen it generally more pronounced in the head. Check out this page...

    Kung Fu Fighting

Here's a link about the checkered barb: http://www.####.co.uk/Cyprinids.htm Checkered Barb (Barbus oligolepis): Nice looking fish, a sort of orange/brown colour. Males tend to be larger, and the colours can be more intense. Would do best in a school. Size Origin Ease of...

    Shark wont eat

Hi, newb to your board here. I'm freshly back into freshwater tropicals after taking about 15 years off from Dempseys. I set up a tank with rainbow sharks and barbs. My informant states that rainbows are similar to red tails, so I thought that I'd chime in. I find that my rainbows also don't...
