    Alive or Dead?

Thanx all, he came down yesterday & is happily munching on a piece of zucchini now, so I'm guessing he's alive :P :D

    Fish swimming odd

Hi Jax, welcome to the boards :) I'm sorry to hear your fishies aren't feeling too well. Just a few concerns. 1. How new the tank is - by the sound of it, your tank is still cycling, which is a process where good bacteria builds up in the tank to take care of ammonia & nitrite. Seeing as...

    Alive or Dead?

Hi everyone. I've had my small-medium sized apple snail for about 3 or 4 months, & all he's always been rather lazy. This week, though, he slept for 3 days straight, & only yesterday did he emerge, suckered onto the glass, seemed ok. Now he's floating, which I know can happen, but he's never...

    Aquarium salt

Well I know that one (very cruel) way of killy cane toads is to pour heaps of salt on them, so I'd assume frogs are similarly intolerant of it. I think (generally), if it doesn't have scales, you shouldn't use salt with it. HTH :)

    Awwwwwww Poor fishies!!

Hmmm my apologies to all, I think the info I gave was on fluoresceing danios, which are (I *think*) not yet on the market, or not to the extent of these zebrafish. If these fish were intended for release into the waterways by scientists, they must (I hope) be relatively sure they will cause...

    Shell Dwelling Cichlids

I don't know much about these guys either sorry, but try posting this in the african cichlids section, you might have some better luck getting info there. Goodluck :)

    grey fur

Yeah, I'd say it's some kind of algae too, if it's been there for a year & doesn't seem to be having any adverse side effects. What size tank is it & what fish do you have in it? Ottos are really good for cleaning up algae, & are great for a smaller tank (or a big one), but should be kept in...

    NEW TANK!! W00T!!!

Thanx! I've decided to name him Sir Hudson Walter the 1st :P He just looks like one lol! Thanx for all the help :D

    Awwwwwww Poor fishies!!

Interesting....I thought they were first "discovered" in a lab when someone decided that inserting the glow gene from a jellyfish into a zebra danio would be a clever thing to do coz they thought it'd make a certain organ glow when exposed to different things so they could study it...

    Alkalinity and pH advice

Hmmmm.....ok, sorry about that - I'm under the (probably wrong) impression that pH & alkalinity are different types of measures of basically the same thing - where pH measures the amount of hydrogen ions in the water (many means it's acidic, few means it's alkaline), I believe alkalinity tests...

    Too much tannin?

Yeah, bogwood & driftwood actually release tannic acid (tannin), so you'll find your pH will probably have gone down, possibly quite a bit. I believe it's meant to be soaked in a bucket of dechlorinated water, which is changed every couple of days for 2-3 weeks. This gets most of the tannins...

    NEW TANK!! W00T!!!

Awesome thanx! He does seem otherwise healthy, even though he doesn't swim around a whole lot (I think he still think's he's in that little jar thing, the poor guy :( ). His fins/tail seem a little squashed in a couple of places, but again, I think that's just from shipping/storage at the shop...

    Awwwwwww Poor fishies!!

Dan (& all others who said this) - I disagree that if an animal is dying out it automatically means it's meant to happen. The reason that there are many organisations trying to save species is because humans are systematically destroying their habitats. Ordinarily, even with all the pollution...

    Alkalinity and pH advice

Personally, I don't like the idea of messing with pH or anything - esp. when using chemicals, changing the pH often stresses the fish out more than anything. If it's an established tank & everyone's happy & healthy enough, I wouldn't mess with it. Generally, fish can adapt to pH/hardness (to a...

    NEW TANK!! W00T!!!

W00T!!!! Finally got my betta/cory set up, 1 (soon to be 3) gorgeous albino cory, & 1 very handsome cambodian betta (pearly white/pinkish body with bluish-green merging into redish-pink tail & fins  ). Ooooh I'm so happy!! Anyhoo, just wondering if it's normal for a male betta to be so...

    Awwwwwww Poor fishies!!

Actually, I was reading somewhere recently (can't remember where, sorry - think it was in a New Scientist or Scientific American magazine) that the gene that makes these fish glow very slowly releases toxins/causes toxins to build up in the cells that glow, greatly shortening their lifespan. I...

    Poorly Molly

If they've only got one spot I don't think they probably have black spot - from what I've read, black spot is a parasite that causes black spots, but there tend to be a number of them and they are quite small. Try google image searching it & see if what it comes up with looks anything like what...

    The poor fishies....

Lol, i thought about theft, too, but me thinks they probably wouldn't like the 5 hr drive home lol. I have shown her the books & the tests & the info but the standard response seems to be "oh no, I used to keep these for ages & they didn't need all that stuff. They're fine, they must just have...

    The poor fishies....

Hi guys! I'm looking for suggestions on how to get my grandma to look after her fishies better. She has 5 black mores (1 big, 4 babies) in a tank that can't be more than 10 gals. She hardly ever does water changes (though I've finally convinced her to do more than her previous 2 per yr 100%...

ROFL!! Yes I talk to my guys all the time! "ooh you're a handsome lil fella now aren't you!" "oi, play nice!" "Mr. Snail, you're so lazy....." lol the list goes on.....if it's not my cat or my dog it's my fish or my stuffed toy cow :P

    fish with long lives

I know this is off topic, but besides the actual topic, I just wanted to address what some people & WRS are still discussing. I'm not looking for an argument or anything, it's just my opinion. WRS - I've read ur last topic, & I have to say I don't agree with what happened to your molly - even...

    My Problems

I also have this slimey stuff - on the suckers of my heater & filter. My snail sometimes likes to nibble on it & it doesn't seem to be causing any troubles. My guess would be it's some kind of good bacterial build up which is encouraged by good lighting, warm water & good aeration (it's only...

    Betta + cories?

Awesome, thanx. To answer questions/comments & make a few of my own: I'm not sure what kind of cories I'm going with yet (any suggestions?) - I do like pandas, but I'm not sure what's available around here. As for the maybe the betta won't like the cories - if worst comes to worst, would...

    why why why

Yup, got tiny bubbles on my heater too - I'm fairly sure I've figured out y (in my case at least): Light + heat makes slimey stuff (assumably some kind of good bacteria or algae) grow on all surfaces, & seeing as the heater would be the warmest place, it grows the most on it. (Maybe in ur case...

    Betta + cories?

Hey everyone, I really want to get a betta, but I hate the thought of having him all couped up in like a little vase thing, so I wanna get him a proper tank or whatever. I would also love to keep something else with him....& I've fallen in love with cories & ottos - but ottos aren't available...

    PH Way out

Yep, the bogwood will be your problem Did you soak it before putting it in the tank? If not, it'll have a massive amount of tannic acid still in it - u'll need to take it out & soak it in a (dechlorinated) bucket of water with (dechlorinated) water changes every few days for around a month (or...

    PH Way out

That's quite a change in pH even over 2 days (IMO)....I've found that rapid changes & exposure to pHs they're not use to can give fins a ragged appearance (since it effectively eats away at them for a bit). Alternatively, it could be finrot brought on by the stress of such a large pH change...

    Dropsy?

He died early hours of this morning, the poor guy....still don't know what happened, scales still hadn't changed any more or anything. Also found my oldest black widow (also been with me from the start) dead this morning - he was there & fine last night, so I don't know what on earth happened...

    Dropsy?

Thanx so much for your reply......he's really not looking good, I don't think he'll be with us in the morning (it's night here) :-( I don't know if it is dropsy or not, I mean his scales look a little funny at the back, but there's definitely no pinecone effect, & I don't even think there's...

    Dropsy?

ARGH!!!!!!!!! His scales haven't really changed, but he's developed some serious swimming issues!! He's having such a hard time staying upright, keeps drifting around on his side & doing flips. OMG I feel so bad I should've known better for the poor guy I'm such an idiot. Anyways, is there...

Black patches that shouldn't be there.......

Wow haven't seen this thread in a while lol. Anyways, I also would recommend a hospital tank if you have one, if not treat the whole tank. I believe myxobacteriosis is a bacterial infection rather than a fungus, though, so make sure you use a bacterial med not a fungus one (unless it's like...
