Can eroded barbles cause cory death?

Substrate is sand - ordinary washed sand. His mate who came with him also has worn barbles. I have been watching that one very closely, and it is able to eat ok. Very sad :( I will pick up some more next week, but if they don't do any good I think I will choose another catfish. Panda's are just...

Can eroded barbles cause cory death?

Hi all. Just lost a cory with no sign of any disease, infection, bacteria etc, no change to tank routine etc. Levels are all within normal range. Cory has been living happily in this tank (with mates who are still alive) for about 6 months. The only thing I could find was that the barbles were...

    Snow white platy

There is not a spec of colour on it (at the lfs). Was just wondering if this is common or not as I have not seen a 100% white platy before.

    Miniature Community?

So no one can tell me if these will make a suitable community for me??

    Miniature Community?

Yup those figures would be the total no. of fish once established, any 'extras' would be given away or back to the lfs. The tank is 14 inches high, 13 to the waterline. Would that cause any problems? Would the Gourami be a suitable 'centerpiece'? In the shop they always seem quite lethargic...

    Miniature Community?

I have a 16 gall hexagonal tank with three fat happy female platys and some java fern. After some initial troubles its been going fine for about 6 months. I haven't added anything else yet as we are moving in two weeks, and I didn't want to be moving a whole lot of fish etc. But, I have an...

Min tank specs for a Sailfin Pleco

Yes that's my concern. That's why my 'dream tank' is one of the super wide ones. But there's dreams and then there's reality. I think that the standard ones are about 18inches wide. So I was wondering if one of these beauties would be able to lead a happy life in a 6' standard or if its really...

    Tandus Catfish

Got bored the other night and did a net search to find out what sort of fish is in my partner's parents tank. Definately a Tandus Catfish B). His dad caught it on a line (fishing) over a decade ago and he's been living it up in their lounge room since. He has a six foot tank to himself - he used...

Min tank specs for a Sailfin Pleco

Would a standard 6 foot tank be wide enough? Or does it absolutely have to be a 2 foot wide one?

    Tank Compatability

    Thanks Guys!

    Tank Compatability

Really? The Sailfin is my partners idea. These holidays down the coast we saw a fully grown one (about 45cm - stunning fish btw) in a 5 x 2 x 2 and to be honest it looke just a fraction to big for that tank. What tank size would you recomend for this combination? Edited to add: Am I correct...

    Tank Compatability

btw what I would be after would be a fairly peaceful easygoing tank with relatively hardy fish. Do you think that can be achieved with those fish?

    Tank Compatability

Ok so the fish selected are a compromise between what my partner and I like. What I would like to know is a) will they all get along and B) are my ideas on tank size correct. Don't forget this is all hypothetical, dreamland, maybe oneday stuff. Fish: 1 sailfin pleco - 'centerpiece' fish...

    Paint flaking into tank!!!!

Oh, and uh - just in case it needs to be said - have definately removed the light.

    Paint flaking into tank!!!!

Ok, deep breaths. For the last two days the water in my 16gal has been fairly cloudy, so I increased water changes etc checked levels. But I've found the cause. My aquarium light (old, a gift) is flaking paint and some of it is falling through the little hole where the filter fits through...

    Lethargic - red gills

Thankyou Wolf. The site is now added to favourites. She didn't show signs of flashing or rubbing, or heavy breathing for that matter. But she did appear to halve her weight almost overnight, and I found emeciation as a possible symptom on another site. I could not find out if this is...

    Lethargic - red gills

Ok one of my platys is just 'floating' near the top, with just enough movement to stop itself getting sucked up the filter. The other two are fine. They are the only fish in a 16 gal cycled tank. Water parameters are all fine, and I just did a water change (20%) just in case. Platy is not...

    First Fish In!

Yeah, I know. I probably won't be able to bring myself to do it, but on the other hand I don't want to breed 'just for the heck of it' and end up with overstocked, miserable fish  . We'll see. These ones have to live first, lol.

    First Fish In!

Thanks! Not so sure on the exact tank size as it is a stretched hexagonal  but it's approx. 60L. I think that's about 16g? I reckon when I get a male, they'll breed whether I want them to or not lol. But I'll be able to move them cos a freind has a predator tank :/ .

    First Fish In!

Just brought the first fish home from the lfs. Well, first in a lot of years. Tank just cycled (took 6 weeks  ). I just got three platys - all female but ones pregnant. There's nowhere for fry to hide though, so I better hope they get eaten before I get attached to them (thats gotta be...

We went shopping and we spent too much money

Wow  neat fish! Complete newbie question here: but in the pic captioned "Everyone wants to get in on the shot" - what is the fish in the top left corner? Purty! :kewlpics:

No fish yet, but toxins in the water?

Yeah, its the tap water. Amonia is low but nitrates higher... I don't want to create a mini spike each time I do a water change.... :/

No fish yet, but toxins in the water?

 Thanks! One more Q: if my raw water is like this, is this going to create a problem when I do water changes?

    Hi all !

Hi guys! nice forum! Well I'm wanting to set up my 60L again. Always had success previously but am now living in a different part of the country and haveing troubles with water parameters - time to educate myself :) . I have learnt so much from lurking on here! Noice to meet ya all!

No fish yet, but toxins in the water?

Thanks  Toxins are in the 'raw' water - so I guess I'm asking if this is the same as starting a fishless cycle , and if good bacteria will now establish based just on the raw water parameters???? Thanks

No fish yet, but toxins in the water?

Hi all, newbie here :D I am setting up my tank again after a few years, and have had the (raw) water tested. There are no fish, but amonium and nitrate are present? Anyone know why? I will do some water changes but what else can I do - Will good bacteria establish though there are no fish? Ta
